Grimhilde - no one can unfurl a cape like she can.
I appreciate how you refuse to let people forget the LGBTQ+ icons of days gone by. 💛

Me too, I hate homophobic people (which probably explains why most gay shippings aren’t as popular as heterosexual ones good like JessRoger (Who Framed Roger Rabbith or bad like SonAmy (Sonic X/Sonic Riders trilogy, mainly Sonic Free Riders).) and so should everyone else.
Cruella actually had a husband (he was a furrier, naturally) in the original book. But she was clearly the boss in their relationship, and he took her name when they married, so she was still transgressing gender norms. I prefer the book version of Cruella (although I haven't read it since I was a kid), because she didn't have any tragic backstory. She came from a long line of evil monsters, with several hints that her family descended from literal Devils (hence her name).
As a bisexual woman, I am only now learning about absolute icons of bisexuality from the past and it brings me an sense of comfort. This was the video I needed today! That freaking quote had me choking!!
Always fascinated by Cruella as a character. They really made a character that... literally wants to skin puppies, which is awful, but she's still somehow extremely fun and memorable... this video explained it well and I loved it! She's probably one of my favourite villains.

Yeah, in general villains are fun when they either own their villainy, or are so amoral that they just don't care what anything thinks of them. That's one of the reasons I've been disappointed with Disney villains lately. Either they're closeted secret sociopaths like Hans, or else given some "good reason" for being bad that makes them feel wishy-washy. The only recent exception I can think of is Mother Gothel, except what she does is so genuinely heinous that she's just despicable.

What's wrong with skinning puppies?
I had flashbacks of being little, wearing sheets like a shawl and "smoking" a pencil
Ambisextrous is probably the most interesting word I’ve ever heard and I absolutely love it, say that out loud 3 times fast!
I can't explain why exactly, but the new Cruella was my favorite film last year. It just made me feel so good all the way through, and I was not expecting it one bit.
As an aside, I absolutely adore the term "ambisextrous." 🙂
Oh? No Glen Close shout out? Queen Glen knew where the line was, and gracefully danced it!
I loved this! I've so often heard that the lady villains of Disney represent drag, which is great. however, i've always been fascinated by them as "bad women", as they're brusque and aggressive, usually berating or mocking men around them. they stand it contrast to the female protagonist, simultaneously warning of what women should NOT be and what a woman COULD be. As usual, you pack a lot of awesome content into short videos - excellent!
ambisextrous is my new favorite term
3:39 Wow. What a legendary quote.
I really like campy characters. Or even just characters who are very over the top. Rarity from Mlp Fim (she’s like a good guy version of Cruella) and Zeke from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (he’s like a mix of Gaston and Kronk) come to mind.
I'm shocked some people don't see Cruella as inherently queer-coded. One of my headcanons has been that Cruella was *so* fixated on making a coat out of puppies *just* to wound Anita out of spite and jealousy.
You've been on a streak making nothing but BANGERS of videos
I love Tallulah Bankhead's persona & style! & the 1961 version of Cruella is the only one I can accept.
The covers at the end of your videos are SO underrated! Great job as always!
So THIS is why I was always attracted to the villans.. I love Cruella so muchh
NO AMBISEXTROUS IS SUCH AN ICONIC LABEL
She was always a favorite character of mine. As a queer person growing up, looking back now, it's not surprising why. As always the research, joy, and care that went into this video essay is so greatly appreciated. And it makes it very clear WHY Cruella always sang to me (in more ways than one haha!) 💜
“Cruella” is a family favorite now. And she snagged that Oscar for costume with ease. Like, was there any doubt?
Ah Tulluah. My favorite old Hollywood gal.
I don't remember the animated movie _101 Dalmatians_ as well as I remember the novel (which I picked up in my fifth grade classroom library, iirc). Do the lesbian-coded governesses/maids (Nanny Cook and Nanny Butler) make it into the movie?
@amandadane868

Only 1 nanny makes it in the animated film and live action film. They never say which she is.

This was really interesting. Cruella is one of my favourite Disney villains partly because her goal is so reprehensible (skinning puppies. I mean come one!) but mostly because she is just so entertaining! I love it when villains can be both funny and threatening. It's a great contrast. Also very glad to see a video about a q-coded female characters. Most videos, at least the ones that I've ran across, about how Disney villains are gay -or q-coded talks about the male villains like Scar and Jafar and, if older, Captain Hook and Shere Khan. But not many talk about the female ones. So that was interesting.

I don't really see her goal as that reprehensible. People wear fur and leather made from other animals, after all. Why draw the line at puppies?
Thank you so much, I deeply appreciate your preservation of queer history with this research and the importance of queer influence in art.
One of the best episodes of the Aladdin TV series had an anti-villain named Arbutus, a sort of plant god who kidnaps Jasmine and makes her part of his 'art.' Ron Perlman did his voice and made it silky and aristocratic and vaguely effeminate ("It needs something - LILACS!") but deeper, to give him some more gravitas. In the end he's not really evil, just bitter about humans treating his plants as lifeless objects. He's what I might call a positive queer-coded character.
Thank you for making this vid! I feel like vintage queer male history is often discussed and easy to find, but I feel like I have a harder time learning about queer female history. Also I promise I still watch your videos even if it's not within the day or hour it's uploaded, I just subscribe to a lot of youtubers and my watch later backlog is kinda big
Dreamsounds: "But for many people, the real Cruella will stay in 1961" Me, who has seen 101 Dalmatian Street form 2019: "Ya sure about that?"😏
Gonna be singing the song all day now! 😂 Fantastic video and analysis, as always!
I've done Cruella for Halloween; maybe now I know why!
Loving this
Very interesting! I've recognized for a while that Cruella is queercoded, but I didn't know that she was specifically inspired by Tallulah Bankhead. In fact, I've never heard of her before. Thank you for sharing! I'm excited to research more about Tallulah now :)
“Ambisextrous”😭😭
woah shes bisexual i didnt know that
to adorando os seus vídeos
You have the prettiest voice 😳
I would say Cruella is the female Gaston in the way the develop as villains. They are Queer Caricatures with massive negative person traits so deep they don't even see why they are the bad guy. Their respective narratives are pushed most heavily because they cannot take rejection. Straight people have all of these flaws too but something about the Queer community allows them to exhibit their personality traits in a much more encapsulatable way and apply them to artistic media. One day we may appreciate the Queer community putting on makeup and letting us villify them for our entertainment and tell our iconic stories. Afterall a story can only be as good as it's villain, and the Queer community has painted us some incredible villains.
cruella (2021) stans rise up
💜
YUM
I’m not apart of the q community. I’m just interested in villains. I don’t judge for how one can affect the mind and heart of another. I just observe the wheel spin. That’s what it’s about. To me of course.
as much as i enjoy this, using The Children's Hour when talking about the "predatory lesbian" trope when it intentionally subverts that (i.e. she's a lesbian but it doesn't affect her job as a schoolteacher, as the people targeting her assume) rubbed me the wrong way a bit.
I kinda dig "ambisexterous"!
this probably explains why I, as a little gay boy, decided that Cruella did nothing wrong and was actually totally awesome. She is def one of my favourite Disney villains ever.
Hattie McDaniel was bi???????? omaga
Wrong as usual but cute vid.
