Yeah, I agree. A lot of cartoons from Cartoon Network, (not many but,) Nickelodeon, and Netflix, actually have a ton of LGBTQ+ characters, and I love that, but I feel like Disney breezes past queer relationships, and focuses on hetero relationships. I don't think there's been a full on Pixar movie about an LGBTQ+ character, which is kind of upsetting

@Me E it'd be better if characters that are LGBTQIA have more screen time, or may even be the main lovestory, but not for just a random LGBTQIA character to get a lot of screentime. Like a whole dedicated character, but like not a stereotype, but alas Disney is too afraid to make their bigoted audience mad, and they know that we won't get made if they give us little slivers of LGBTQIA characters.

  • @finnythepooh

@Me E that's not what they're saying. They're saying that we need more LGBTQ+ main characters in Disney because there's nearly non. Kids need to know about LGBTQ+. And one way to make them understand it is through shows

i thought the guy was his adult son and one of the shorter females was his wife lol I thought at the time, thats a bit ambiguous but I bet they'll try and say the guy is the husband LOL Disney has been normalising 'queer' in it's films without really providing any meaningful context to them. It's like an easter egg for LGB fans to look out for. Its just plausible deniability on Disneys part to the chinese government. If the characters were genuinely represented you wouldnt be able to crop them out for that audience in china. I would love to see more honest and respectful work from disney but i feel like indivdiual creators and creative heads will continue to have to work under the radar for a long time to come.

TBH what pissed me off the most about this scene is that his alleged family did not even appear on frozen 2. I was expecting them to acnowledge his husband or something very basic, like at least showing them on screen with him :( it's really sad because when frozen came out people where talking all the time about them. They have the chances to give a little bit of spotlight to lgbt+ people but instead they shrug, get some points on interviews for saying stuff like "maaaaaaybe this character is not straight, who knows!" and forget about it

They got nothing on She-ra. Steven Universe bows to the gayness of its superior. She-ra was always quite gay, being a metaphor for LGBT+ activism and all that, but in the last season alone, we had: - Exactly two married couples appear on-screen, both gay. - One married couple that is the focus of a subplot that goes on for many episodes. - A gay main character. - A side character said to have had a crush on another boy, then shown with his past crush (presumably current boyfriend) holding a baby. - A reference to the phrase “friend of Dorothy”, a once popular euphemism/code for gay. - The main romantic subplot is gay, and ends up being essential for the main plot. The Universe is literally saved by gayness. - Non-binary antagonist is redeemed. - A character that technically doesn’t appear is implied to be trans. (One of the main characters is also implied to be trans, but much more subtly). - The four main characters form two couples (one gay, one straight). In an inversion of the common structure, the straight one is left implied, while the gay one has a long on-screen kiss following a confession in the climax of the show. This list is terribly ordered, but I’m not going back to fix it.

It unfortunately wasn’t on for very long, was made for a younger demographic, and Disney never made much of promoting the show (or its queer storylines) while it was on the air. There’s a queer character in Diary of a Future President as well, but I imagine Disney hasn’t really bragged about that because it‘s not a huge property for them in the way High School Musical, Beauty and the Beast, Star Wars, and even Onward (it being a new animated movie) are. I doubt that Dreamsounds is intentionally snubbing Andi Mack, it’s more likely he’s unaware. -S

Disney keeps forgetting about how Hugo in "Hunchback of Notre Dame" very clearly had the hots for Esmerelda's goat, Jholli. Jholli is a male goat. This is made evident by Esmerelda using male pronouns to refer to the goat. Therefore, Hugo is Disney's first explicitly gay character. (Heck, if you watch the awfulness that is the direct-to-video sequel, Hugo and Jholli are together at the end.)

Interestingly, the imagery that came to mind for me when I heard the line "Ferninand kissed him" wasn't a stereotypical gay joke, but like a gesture of goodwill and forgiveness. Turning the other cheek because he's good-natured and never learned to bear a grudge ("how to fight" in this case meaning how to even be ill-tempered instead of just the physical act of fighting). There's NO WAY that's the intended way to read it, which makes me quite sad. But I guess that it's nice that I can *pretend* that the song is singing Ferdinand's praises as a gnc peacemaking king haha

"In a world that's not particularly accepting of LGBT individuals, there's an important power in reclaiming narrative" This is a fantastic quote. A lot of fan theories about characters being LGBT get dismissed because there's "not enough evidence" - but that's not always the point. When we have so few places to see ourselves in media, it's important and sometimes necessary to make theories that may seem like a stretch.

Lemme just say this Having a character from the LGBT community *does not* automatically make the show good. I’ll use Garnet from Steven Universe as an example. In the later beginning we were shown that Garnet is a fusion of a ruby and a sapphire who later become married (that episode made me cry so hard) But then in future garnet becomes a thing of fusion and only that. They make it seem like she is only unique bc of the 2 that make her. Which isn’t true. Garnet posses many cool attitudes and is really great in combat. Another example is she ra This in no way is any hate to the show. I love the show and recently watched the finale. She-Ra has a few gay characters but sometimes miss the whole point of the characters existence. An example of this is Spinerella and Netossa(no like they’re lowkey garnet in human form) the show focuses a lot on their relationship and not them as individuals. All imma say is gay relationships can work the same way as straight relationships. Their sexuality should not be something as focused if it is supposed to be normalized *thank you for reading my ted talk*

  • @Maieveryday2

    @Maieveryday2

That happens in lots of shows, the show never focuses on the individuals in the relationship only the relationship that they individuals have. They usually never even expand on what those characters like to do separately, they are always together there isn't anything they like to do separately it's like the bane of there existence is to fulfill the relationship. It gets kinda repetitive sometimes

@@thepinkviolinist well, yes, of course the whole point is to be seen as equal, which goes hand and hand with being seen as normal. My main gripe is that people seem to think that we will achieve normalcy through background representation. While In theory it sounds good. If you have to look in the background to find two men or women smooching, and is something that you most likely will never see on most of your watches. Is it really representation? Is it really going to achieve normalcy if people don’t see it AT ALL?! So to that end I ask, why not have gay relationships in a drama or romance like with straight relationships with main characters? The relationship isn’t given a shock value of “oh god they gay how weird and unusual 😱” it’s treated as normal and is given the same amount of screentime as the average straight relationship is normally given. With the only difference being that the characters are both of the same sex? Why not just do it like this?

Im half Spanish half Swedish, and in Sweden, on Christmas, there’s a tradition of watching a specific recopilación of short films. They show them on TV, always at the same hour. There’s a large variety of them: one that shows how Santa Claus’s factory produces toys, a fraction of the Disney Robin Hood adaptation where he’s a fox, a sketch of Donald Duck trying to photograph a bird; and one of them Ferdinand’s film. We always laugh at the fact that they call him Ferdinando, because that’s not a real name, it should be Fernando, along with other mistakes. This is not related to the point of the video, but I wanted to share it.

If anyone thinks movie studios wouldn't be aware of gayness in the 1930s, you're wrong - there was an unspoken tradition of gay character types in movies and theater at the time, mostly in musicals and comedies, actors like Edward Everett Horton specialized in them - the Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz is also an example. Usually it was called 'the Nance' type. Walt Disney knew about it when he made another short 'The Reluctant Dragon' - he described the titular dragon to his artists as a 'Pink Tea character.' Stereotypical, but doesn't exactly suggest he himself was homophobic.

I personaly always liked that disney in the movies (let's ignore the stupid marceting) rarely mentiones directly what sexuality someone has. Becouse I'm someone who belives that sexuality doesn't matter. It's not what forms a characters personality, just a detail about who they prefere to date. Not putting it on big pedastals gives it a feeling of normality if you ask me. Becouse it is a normal thing, so it shouldn't be treated like something special if someone is gay or bi or lesbian or whatever. That's also the reason why I get sooooooo anoyed by disneys marketing. They shine so much spotlight on something that should be completely uninportant becouse it's just as normal as having brown hair, making it look as if the characters only existed for marketing resons and not becouse the story writers liked creating them.

    4 жыл бұрын

@@archivechannel23 it's not about wanting to feel "special" or not liking straight movies, hell, I don't think any reasonable person would hate a movie simply for being straight. It's really just about representation and that goes for any minority because the truth is that fiction can have a huge impact on how we view us, other people and the world. An example I always like to use is the story Whoopi Goldberg told. When she was little she saw Star Trek and was so inspired by seeing a black woman on TV who wasn't a maid that she felt like she could become anything she wanted. That's why people want more representation than the blink and you'll miss it stuff Disney pulls. There are so, so many places and people that aren't accepting of queer folks, sometimes even their own families, that just seeing one character that's openly and clearly like you and is achieving great things (as fictional characters often do) or even just living a good, happy life can give you a sense of hope that you, too, will be accepted and loved. People deserve characters they can relate to and kids deserve role models that show them that it's ok to be who you are. To what OP said about not feeling sexuality is important to a character: valid and respectable opinion. What people will sometimes do is that they'll make a GAY character rather than a gay CHARACTER, essentially making their sexuality the only part that's important, which is not the way to do representation because everyone is a complex individual and boiling that down to just one or two traits is frankly stupid, both in and out of context. But it's important not to forget that a characters sexuality or skin color or gender etc. might mean a lot more to someone else. If the character is a puzzle the one piece that's the character's sexuality will never be the whole picture but likewise, the puzzle will never be fully complete without that one piece. So no, it's not about feeling special, it's about feeling like you will be seen and accepted for who you are, something I think everyone deserves.

I much prefer the illustrations in the book to the cartoon. Not crazy about the song, but thanks for sharing this!

1:22 T'be fair, Disney declaring stuff like this isn't exactly new. When Steamboat Willy debuted, Walt Disney very intentionally didn't correct the misconception that it was the first animated short ever synced to music, using breakthrough technology. In reality, Fleischer Studios (Popeye/Betty Boop) had invented the tech and already used it in a few animations. Despite this, the much more popular Steamboat Willy became most people's introduction to musical animation, and so the misconception was spread and supported by Disney, but never so directly as to open a possible lawsuit. People remember Walt Disney as a great artist and entertainer, and while he certainly was, he was ALSO an incredibly shrewd businessman.

I feel like Disney's approach to including LGBT+ characters thus far has been more like them fishing for brownie points. The romance between the two boys in the HSM show felt like a rip-off of Glee's Klaine (nothing wrong with that, I love Klaine), and giving characters "blink and you'll miss it" lines that imply that they're gay is a coward's way out of having actual representation.

My (personal) favourite representation of LGBTQ+ characters in media are The Dragon Prince, the new She-Ra, and SU. These all show LGBTQ+ characters, but they don't make it really dramatic. But they also aren't "blink and you'll miss it" either. They treat it like it's the same as cisgender or straight characters. Another thing is The Dragon Princes mute character. Her name's slipped my mind, but I love how they don't make her seem helpless. She's actually quite the opposite, which is the kind of representation of differently abled characters I want to see more of in media.

Someone from Brasil here! José is brazilian, and in Brazil is common for friends to hug and kiss eachother, as long as it's not a mouth kiss it isn't romantic, sexual or flirty at all. It is in fact a polite greeting.

This was before the meaning of gay was changed. In this context it would be "Three *Happy* Caballeros". Also, did you see Daisy's first appearance in DuckTales recently? He was head over heels for her.

I always loved the Ferdinand book when I was little! Although it does bring back bad memories, as when my papa died, it was the day I'd brought that book to read to him at the hospital. I never knew it was coded this way, and it makes it even more special to me. Have a blessed day or night
