Is it just me, or has Disney sucked at marketing their films lately? I mean, when Encanto came out I had no idea what the movie was about. What I got from the poster was that "Okay, it's a big family and they all live in this house... But what's the plot?" And, I mean, I still haven't seen the film but the marketing should have been obvious? Short spots focusing on the people with power and then cut to Mirabel. And hints of Bruno (cause we don't talk about Bruno). I mean that one became a meme so quickly, why didn't they utilize that? And now with Strange World... Yeah, I've seen some posters but once again, that's it. They pushed Avatar: The Way of Water much more than Strange World and that, to me, is odd.

The post-transition remake with you and your hubby is such a cute thing to do! Btw, love those killer nails. The color is so simple and classy. 😊 One thing to note about the Jungle Cruise, is I'm pretty sure it takes place in the past, right? Like 1940's, at the latest, I'd imagine. So, in a way, coming out wasn't really something one could just do. And if you did, you had to be discreet about it, choosing words carefully, to sorta dance around the subject. In a way, it reflects the struggles we used to face and that many of us still face, albeit in a different manner. Whether that was intentional, a way to try to satisfy the homophobic fans/skirt around the subject, or whether it was a mix of both, I cannot say.

That’s definitely a good point and I agree that the way it’s handled in the movie is contextually accurate for the time period it portrays. I think my gripe is usually that it would be different if there had been other open representation in a mainstream Disney film, so I see it in that context as well, which makes it feel more disappointing.

i love what you said about mean/rude queer characters, lol. i think a lot of (not all, but a lot) queer people have people-pleasing tendencies, myself included -- almost like a way to "make up" for being queer. like "yes i'm queer but also i'm super-nice and will always listen to your problems when you want me to and be morally perfect" etc. but now that i'm in my late twenties and am learning how to express emotions thought of as "negative" more (anger, sadness, disappointment, frustration, worry, etc.), it feels GOOD to see queer characters who aren't morally perfect. like it lets me exhale, like a little voice is saying, "yes, it's still good to try to treat people right, but you can be nuanced and human and complicated, too." like when giselle (sp?) in "enchanted" experiences anger for the first time. just to end this thought, i think one of the first less-than-wholesome queer characters i encountered in fiction is the titular baru cormorant of "the traitor baru cormorant" and its sequels "the monster baru cormorant" and "the tyrant baru cormorant". it's a fantasy story about a lesbian accountant who tries to work her way up within a cruel and prejudiced empire, with the hopes of destroying them and protecting her home. she has moments of ruthlessness and arrogance, but also deep vulnerability and empathy. the books are one of my favorite series ever.

Yeah Cyrus is actually a pretty great character and good example of a gay rep for a Disney children’s show. Over the show you watch him develop a crush on a boy, date a girl and say it doesn’t feel right, come out slowly to his friends, get over his old crush and get a boyfriend in the series finale. He wasn’t a stereotypical gay character but a character who was also gay. It was one of the first times I actually felt like Disney did a gay character right.

And, if I recall correctly, he is the first character to say "I'm gay" and come out on a Disney Channel show. My guy Cryrus walked so Luz and Amity could run yet nobody ever talks about him :(

he did. he had a crush on a boy, jonah, dated a girl (which was practically so that he'd have an excuse to hang out with said boy), iris, realized he was gay and broke up with her. then he met another boy, tj, the captain of the basketball team who was an asshole to his friend, and also seemed to be interested in him first, developed feelings for him (due to tj having more faith in his abilities than his friends) and, even though tj struggled with internalized homophobia, he ended up accepting his feelings for cyrus and held his hand. cyrus also comes out three separate times to his friends, the third time actually saying "i'm gay", a first (and, so far, only) for disney.

The first gay rep in Disney that I remember making an impact on me was the lesbian moms in one of the last episodes of Good Luck Charlie. I was in high school at the time and I remember the topic of gay rights was a very hot topic at the time. So when Disney announced this episode would have a lesbian couple in it, it was such a huge deal. I'm surprised Owl House is considered obscure, but knowing how Disney doesn't really acknowledge its animated properties post-Phineas and Ferb in merch form or similar promotions, it i s kind of niche- and yet it's the side of Disney I've always enjoyed the most. idk how it is in the united states, but in scandinavia we usually have these medleys/compilation of disney's christmas specials and iconic moments that play on christmas eve every year. for some reason at the end of this year's medley, they promoted strange world seemingly out of the blue- mostly showing the scene where the MC finds the small blue alien and has to escape the other aliens while riding some red floating drops? it kinda put me and my parents off because it was neither cozy or christmas-y (plus the scene was more action packed, causing us shock lol). it's weird they didn't even pick a cozy or heartfelt moment tbh. so it's not like they haven't marketed the film at all internationally, they just either haven't done it enough or have been misplacing advertisements.

@@DreamsoundsVideo The Owl House was supposed to have 4 or even 5 seasons which were being planned for years in advance, but in 2021 the fourth season was cancelled and the third was shortened to three 45 minute specials which have been premiering throughout the span of a few months. The reasoning was supposedly that the show “didn’t fit the Disney brand’, some thought it was too episodic or too scary for kids, but a vast majority speculate that the cause was homophobia. Seeing as Dana Terrace had a hard time getting queer rep in the show, and, (unlike some other disney shows) fought for her characters to be openly queer throughout the series and not just at the end. It would definitely make sense that they would want to get rid of the show faster seeing as it got a fair amount backlash from anti-gay parent groups, but the show was and is very successful. It has an incredibly large fanbase and gives Disney lots of views when they post ToH content. When Disney Channel posted the first 45 minute special to their KZread page in late 2022 it was one of their most successful videos, getting millions of views over the span of a few days. But, earlier in January the second special was mysteriously leaked weeks before its set premiere. Based on the crew’s tweets, they believe it was leaked by Disney in an effort to make the episode less successful (as a way to justify shortening/canceling the show), because it became abundantly clear that shortening it was a mistake, which has been acknowledged. Just yesterday the first special was mysteriously removed from the Disney Channel’s KZread, where it had millions of views. Obviously this is an ongoing situation and the series finale is yet to premiere, but there is still hope for a spin-off show in the future if people fight hard enough.

Thank you for the kindness! I did sing at the end of my last video (the Disney and Trans Kids one) and a few other recent ones, but it's not an every-video-thing, finding my singing voice again has been taking much longer than my speaking voice. But about a month ago I hit a turning point, so that's why that last video has music and in 2023 I'll come back to that more frequently :)

Diary of a Future President had a great arc about discovering sexuality that added a lot of complexity to Booby in the show. It's a shame it got cancelled, but the arc throughout the show ends on a pretty solid note of I remember correctly kzread.info/dash/bejne/m6Wmw8NwfMjgdrA.html Will have to give HSM The Musical The series a watch too since it sounds like it has similarly good representation Also shout-out to the lesbian moms in that one episode of Good Luck Charlie. A toddler received death threats for that episode so I appreciate the push for explicit representation, even if minor

I find it ironic that you referred to Luz as niche when she was one of the few who I actually knew of beforehand. I knew Specter and Greg (but not by name) and I had heard of La Fou (again, not by name), but the others were brand new to me. Maybe it's different for me since I'm part of Gen Z.

cyrus goodman will always be number one for me, because he was the first gay on disney, or at least to me, like everyone else, whenever i saw their articles i'd always be like but cyrus though! and when hsmtmts came out, we always jokes, cyrus and tj walked very slowly so carlos and seb could freaking soar ( that entire show is so queer i love it)

I remember casually putting Andi Mack on in the background once on what happened to be the episode you reference (Cyrus's 3rd coming out scene) and was so surprised to get to see something like that. I started going back and watching more of the show and it's representation of other minoritys is great too but they did such a good job with Cyrus's main episodes (also his eventual boyfriend is great Thelonious Jagger forever)

Not a first gay character but the BEST Disney gay character (imo) is Bobby Cañero Reed from Diary of a future president. It’s such an authentic depiction of questioning and later coming out. It doesn’t center around homophobia yet it still portrays the anxiety that comes along with being gay. And it has my favorite coming out scene where he just gets slammed with a hug

i think my favorite gay disney character story comes out of ducktales 2017! the character penumbra wasn’t initially planned to be gay , but a storyboarder, sam king, thought it would be nice to not have her end up in a relationship with launchpad. he has a crush on her and thinks she hates him, but she ends up saying that she’s just not interested in an “earth male”, and launchpad immediately just accepts it and they end up being great friends instead. the wording isn’t crazy explicit, but if you watch the show, you’ll see that penny refers to everything on earth is an “earth ___”, like “earth rock”, “earth ship” (she’s an alien from the moon). the same storyboarder also gave us bisexual launchpad bc “he has too much love in his heart”. so basically buff moon lesbian and airheaded bisexual hunk for the win

I think it absolutely sucks strange world is getting so much shit Here I was thinking that we were getting better. Here’s a tip for all my queer peeps out there; do NOT read the one star reviews for strange world 💀 it’s a cesspit of homophobia. It’s absolutely ridiculous and just goes to show how much we NEED this rep. But watch Disney turn around and say that “oh gay people clearly aren’t marketable” when it was absolutely their own fault that this movie had shit marketing. Anyways I really appreciate your optimism, it’s a big help rn when I just feel so hopeless

@@rho-starmkl4483 I also agree with this tbh. It just sucks that all of the 1-star reviews I saw were *just* complaining about the gay stuff. If people have actual criticisms for the movie, I don't care, and probably agree with them, but if all they have to say is that Disney is 'pushing the gay agenda onto children', that's not a criticism and it's rlly sad to think we haven't moved past that yet.

Can we at least give a shoutout to one of the major precursors to Disney's first gay character - the lady who calls Aladdin "rather tasty." She solely exists to aggressively thirst after the (admittedly dashing) hero, and aided in the sexual awakening of a whole generation of gay men who realized they felt that way about Aladdin as well. She is absolutely iconic and deserves to be acknowledged.

I feel as though we also gotta consider how the streaming service business has eaten up a lot of the attention of various production's within Disney, like Pixar in particular at the moment. As a result, this push for LGBTQ+ content matches other streaming services pushing for that, the most infamous example now being Netflix. It's not entirely COVID's fault that relatively queer-friendly movies like Luca, Turning Red and recently that Baymax short series all emphasize inclusion and diversity while also being platformed specifically for disney+. This of course has major issues, where these streaming companies tell various creators (and their audiences) they want "diverse" content but then will also platform garbage like Dave Chappelle in the same breath. Ironically, The Incredibles 2 deals with this rather bluntly in its story if you watch it. Seems like Brad Bird has had some grief getting pitches out there for distributors. Seeing various relatively progressive films, shorts and series get put up on disney+ coincides relatively well (up until the second half of 2022, gee wonder why...) with Disney's really trashy "first gay x" mantras that really never hold water in comparison to even 2012's ParaNorman.
