The Bike Bucket

Ғылым және технология

Ever wanted to make your own rain proof durable bike panniers?
This video shows the Bike Bucket kit sold by Tim of Sellwood design can convert readily available plastic buckets into cheap bike panniers.
You can order the kit on his website or be inspired to make your own out of parts you might have in your garage or can get at a hardware store.

The bike bucket can also double as a stool-seat which is useful if you're on the road, such as bike camping.

Thank you Bike Stuff PDX, Amit and Daniela! Excellent filming and editing. I have been using bike buckets for decades, they are extremely functional and durable. As I try to make my bike my primary transportation, it means I need to carry a lot of things on my bike! Bike buckets represent an excellent way to go shopping, bike touring, picnicking, and commuting. One of their real strengths compared to say Ortlieb Panniers is that they can be set on the ground and they don't fall over. (They also cost 80% less than Ortlieb's)🚲🚲🚲

@@jamesclark6142 Looking at prices on Amazon, double panniers of this size are about $90. If you purchase two Bike Buckets from Tim's website, they will cost you $60. So, some saving there but not a whole lot, especially if you need to pay for shipping as well. The kit itself is only $15, and you can definitely find buckets like this for free on NextDoor, BuyNothing or Craigslist, so that's about a third of the cost. However, the parts themselves aren't super unique so if you look hard enough you might be able to find equivalents for free, especially if you have friends who are into building stuff and might have lots of spare parts in their drawers.

Cool, but there is a much simpler, but effective solution. I've attached a plastic crate, from the hardware shop, on the top of my bike raket by using tie-wraps

Is it rain proof? Easy to take on and of? Also, you can still balance a plastic crate on top of the buckets and tie it down with old bike tubes. I've been doing that from time to time.

I have two bike buckets, they work well with my analog bike rack. Sidenote, even if the plastic breaks on one bucket, you can remove the metal hardware from the bucket and install it on a new bucket of the same size and shape. You won't find that kind of repair-ability on any brand made pannier bag.

I put them on my current Specialized non-assisted bike, but will probably try to see if they can be mounted on the front rack of my Tern GSD cargo e-bike for overnight trips. Might need some adjustments :)
