    Saponins are soap, right? Hmm, that’s bad news for me, I’ve just put a whole lot in my water butt for cleaning. I’ll have to drain it as it’s for watering my Prayer Plant collection ( divas!) Thanx for info ✌️

    You are correct about the walnut trees not allowing vegetation to grow around them also if you use walnut shavings for bedding with animals with hooves it will cause them to be lame

    The bearded burbler was Rex Hunt. Remember that he used to kiss his fish before putting them back. I've been using Jackfruit leaves since your video on different kinds of leaves a couple of years ago. Absolutely love that they hold together really well and tannins are really low. Thank you. 💚🙏👍🇦🇺 I love my Jackfruit tree.

    Thanks for the video I always add leaves too. I first started with Indian almond leaves but discovered that oak leaves are 99% identical in makeup, so I can just gather oak leaves outside 😊 also I prefer white oak because they're small and good for nano tanks. Cheers Mark.

    I keep hearing that elm leaves are well appreciated by the shrimp. I was told explicitly that black elm worked well. I have no idea where they grow but I know the type we have are pretty sticky when they fall. I would think that whatever that stuff is(sap) attracts the shrimp.

  • @MarksShrimpTanks

    @MarksShrimpTanks

    sap is bad for shrimp so dont give them that, this is why most people use brown leaves and even then they only use green if its well tried and tested like mulberry leaves which are used to feed silkworms.

    @MarksShrimpTanks Cool. I wouldn't put anything fresh, but another shrimp guy said he uses black elm leaves, and they go crazy. I just recently dedicated a 10 gallon to some blue dreams. It was a breeders pack, but I see a bunch swimming up and down like they do when looking for mates. I did see 3 babies,so I know there is one female in the bunch! And that was with a pre-filter on a hang on filter. I will definitely get a sponge filter in there soon. Thanks.

    My shrimp love to munch on almond leaves, but I boil my leaves for a good 15 minutes, pour off the water, add new water and boil again. It tenderizes the leaves too. I know the tannins are supposed to be good, and some fish like the tannins, but I don’t like the discolored water. I also noticed that some leaves when boiled put off a strong smell. I found your comments interesting though and based on what you said, I will keep boiling my leaves before they go in my tank. I will try mulberry leaves in the future as well. I also, soak any wood I am going to use in my tanks, so I was familiar with the cholla wood. Are there other leaves that are good to use?

    @@gayefanner731 yes, I currently have 4 GSPs. The ones in that picture were my first 3 shorthairs. I breed, train and compete with my dogs. I mostly do Scent Work training these days. As for the wood, I soak mine until they water log and sink, then I don’t have to worry about them floating. That takes anywhere from 24 hours to a few days depending on the wood. I have never used apple wood. Make sure the wood is dry (you can’t bend it without it breaking) as sap from some wood is not good for fish. Apple wood though is ok when it is dry.

    Hey there Mark! I appreciate the videos and all the content you have released! It has been a great resource! I am still fairly new to keeping shrimp and have run into an issue of sorts. I have a bare bottom shrimp tank that has a build up of detritus and want to vacuum it to clean it. Last time I did this I ended up spending 30 minutes or so rescuing baby shrimp from the water that was removed. Any suggestions on how to approach this without abducting the fry?

    Botanicals needs to be used after prep like this. if you want to forage for your own stuff you can rinse it off with cold water and then lay it out for a day or two on some sheets of baking paper. Boiling water will ruin the natural compounds. if you want to use it purely for aesthetics/decoration and biofilm, then you can go ahead. but it will not be food or have medicinal properties.
