    Tank mates: Otoclincus will also not eat shrimp. Other fish: it's all about the mouth size, and the environment. You're absolutely correct that basically any fish will eat shrimp, and the assumption should be they'll eat anything they can fit in their mouth. So, if you're looking to breed as many shrimp as possible, outside of fish like otos and bristlenose, better not to have them. But if you just want a healthy ecosystem and you want more shrimp, nano fish are absolutely fine. Shrimplets are extremely good at hiding and grow fast. If you've got little rasboras, ember Tetras, and pygmy Corydoras, they're only able to eat EXTREMRLY small shrimplets (

    I’ve kept fish for 40 years and just set up my first shrimp tank. They arrive in 2-3 days. I’m a nervous wreck! I’m confident that I’ve done everything right, but this is the FIRST video I watched that told HOW to drip acclimate! I mean how fast/slow to drip 💧. I’m so excited and anxious, but I feel better since I learned this tidbit. 😊Thanks so much!!

    Another mistake is... adding new plants. To this day, people lose their shrimp cause they add plants from farms where they use a ton of fertilizers. Same with plants from other people. They can have planaria and parasites on them so always keep the plants in another tank or container for a while before adding them to your shrimptank!

    I was going to say that I've seen multiple people online say that they consider Otocinclus to be the only shrimp-safe fish. Bristlenose were excluded at the time because they were saying that even though they don't attack and eat the shrimp they could do damage just accidentally if they're close to full size. Plus one person swore up and down they saw a Bristlenose eat a baby shrimp once, but I feel like that is crazy rare (if true) because so many people keep them in their shrimp tanks.

  • @petervandieren

    So I got 11 blue dream neo for my 1st attempt at shrimp keeping, I received them in the mail on the 10th, I wasn’t prepared as I wanted to be with the tank. What I did for my last minute tank was use the water from my primary nano and drip acclimated them at the same time with prepared, and dechlorinated tap water! I Truly had no idea what I was doing but after several hours of acclimating I was done and Waited a few days. It’s been 5days and not only did I have a 100% survival rate. I must have received some pregnant shrimp because I had babies on day 3!!! I add an air stone for a few hrs every night and everything seems good so far! As said this is my first attempt and it’s been less than a week and zero deaths. Dumb luck 😅 seems like right now! But hope the success continues. Thanks For all the great info and will follow you for more great tips from here on out! Very grateful for you sharing your knowledge!

    I've got to wonder if the acclimation remark is assuming short shipping or breather bags as once the shipped water's content is exposed to air the waste in the bag from a long trip will turn toxic to the inhabitants. Not sure if shrimp hate ammonia as much as fish, but if fish have been traveling for a day or more in a non-breather bag then once the bag is opened up the fish are sitting in ammonia soup (my understanding, and relatively speaking). Waiting for it to slowly dilute while your fish acclimate with the drip method seems a rather poor choice. However, if you're buying your shrimp/fish from down the road or they come in a breather bag, acclimation is of course better as water parameters can differ. I'm not really sure why people (and companies that sell fish and shrimp and give instructions) don't explain why they're giving the advice they're giving. Which route to go depends on the situation. Preferably buy shrimp that have been raised by the seller or no worse than local to the seller. Preferably know the water parameters of the shrimp you're buying. Preferably short trips and/or breather bags for the shrimp. Assuming these things, acclimate with drip method. If long trip by traditional bag then I'd say temperature acclimate in bag, put into well cycled, clean tank (no drip method, avoiding ammonia exposure), with few to no other inhabitants and then be patient.

  • @MarksShrimpTanks

    @MarksShrimpTanks

    The plop and drop practise comes from fish sellers selling shrimp, often they will have to many shrimp in a bag, most pro shrimp breeders i know do the following, they dont feed their shrimp for a few days before shipping, this means no waste in the bag and then they only add say 5 shrimp to a bag. then drip acclimate.

    You wouldn't believe this but I keep cherry shrimp and spotted Congo puffers in the same tank and the shrimps are thriving. No, I'm not an idiot, I bought the shrimps when I was desperate, having problem finding live snails, and the puffers need shells so their teeth won't overgrow. I don't know if my puffers are below average intelligence wise but like I said, the shrimps are thriving. Lots of plants, wood and places to hide and since the puffers wouldn't dream of eating dried food, the shrimps have quality leftovers and algae wafers. They're incredibly cute.
