One of the reasons I value your channel so highly is you keep trying new things and sharing what works and what doesn't. Recently the change of substrate was a HUGE lesson on a subject most just don't deal with for years and wonder why they start having problems. In this video alone you just explained why powerheads are not desirable for shrimp tanks with a vivid example of what happened when a shrimp got into one during a power outage, which can happen to anyone. I have been considering powerheads for a few things and thanks to you I will now avoid them over just a battery backup for my air system. Even the smallest things make a difference. Thank you.

Thank you Rob, Its a shame as well because I really like the patmini filters but I am getting to many powercuts now for them to be safe in the tanks, I used to plug up the outtake with a little bit sponge but I have 20+ of them in the room now so it can be a real pain to remember and do stuff. I also need to have less plugs in the room for safety reasons, going back to a central airsystem will be perfect for me.

Your tanks look great and lots of breeding happening! I used to hate the thought of changing soils but once I found out there was NO way around it, I changed my mindset. I reset my tanks last year with thinner layers of soil, i staggered the changes, some tanks were set up 1year ago, 6 months ago, and this month, so I don’t have to change all tanks at same time next time around

Great Tour Mark! In the last 3 weeks all my Akadama tanks went from PH 6.2 to a PH of 7.4. The lack of baby survival is what started my investigations! As it turns out I also just set up 3 new tanks but they’re not ready. Make a cap for the powerhead output with some mesh inside, problem solved. If you have access to a 3d printer you could print many caps with mesh in one go. I've had great success with 3d printing parts like that, especially for custom filter piping. It makes it easy to dial in output flow caps if powerheads are too strong for a tank size or area. You can also get USB powered powerheads on ebay for cheap and connect to a powerbank incase of a power outage.

Hi Mark! Great with a new vid out! I see you are growing lots of algea, like I am XD You might want to remove the string algae though so that it stays short. The string algae can be deadly to shrimp. Both adults and babies can entangle themselves in it and they die surprisingly quickly from that. I lost berried females and tons of babies to string algae before I realized that they were not just randomly dying, but were actually getting stuck, as I came upon a shrimp struggling to get free. I had to manually free it, and the algae was really entangled onto it's carapace. Just thought I'd give you a heads up :)

The ugf filters 5:45 2 tanks side by side with the “Asian style filters” Is there any drawback since the filter is elevated? It’s just doing water cycling job. But the debris will be at the bottom.. do we have to clean it manually with a suck out tube? I’m planning to make one with a sponge filter.. in it. I love the ugf filter it adds a raise platform for some planting… just find the elevation not doing the filtering as well as traditional filters. Advise pls . Tks

This type of filter is more aimed at softwater shrimp than anything else because the soil believe it or not is one of the best filters you can get, it has a low ph meaning its negatively charged so it cleans the water very well. and no I wouldn't ever clean this type of filter, they last a few years and then you have to change them.
