    Time to make a feature length, shot entirely at F/1.2 for not reason other than "it'd be cool"...I will call it "Army of Me" ;). Special thanks to Alan at Vintage Lens for Video for loaning me this set for review. I'm not immune to their charms.

    Those Minolta colors stand out so much, they're usually so warm but it exaggerates greens and everything too. The super saturation, the green chromatic aberrations on high contrast areas, it has almost exactly the same quality as my 58mm f1.4. I love Minolta MD lenses so much. I hope you get to try out the 35-70mm f3.5 zoom with macro some time!

    Thanks for the memories of this fine lens! I bought the "newer" Minolta f/1.2 58mm from a camera store in 1978 and shooting film. I paid $155 for it (a lot back then!) used in mint condition and hung on to it for 21 years before selling it on Ebay for $300. And have regretted it ever since they started producing adapters for Minolta lenses to use with Canon DSLR! This lens was awesome! I'm keeping my eye out for one now and already have an adapter for my 5D-MK4 ready to go.

    I got the Minolta MC 50mm f/1.4 a few weeks ago and it has not left my Fujifilm X-T2 once. It’s quite soft wide open and the focus is difficult to nail but I just love using it so much. I think I enjoy manual focus more than auto at this point. Great video!

    Mark, it's perfect more voice over videos. All the things we spoke about, showing just more footage and making the production a little easier (on the front end) this ticks it all... plus it helps when the footage looks so god damn gorgeous. This is the second time I've watched it btw, I forgot to say hi the first!! Love it... time for more!! LETSSSS GOOOOO!!!

    Not having to waste time to setup an on camera only to cover 90% was a nice time saver for sure. Meant I could actually capture what I needed over the weekend and put it together in the evenings that followed. For me the average retention is sitting at just over 5mins so anything over that in my videos is 100% a complete and utter waste of time. In a world where time is a problem, it makes sense to cut that out. The tough part really is finding a sequence of shots that isn't completely and totally random, but also showcases what you want in the lens, but at least the effort there goes toward the general thesis of the video, showcasing the lens. While I do think an on camera portion is important, especially from a branding point, I'm not going to force it if it doesn't serve a bigger purpose. Anyway weird to be back, but happy to be back. It's been a crazy 35 days, but at least the effort put into that venture pays the F off. I can't say the same for this platform....so much effort for a result that doesn't change. I'm over that now anyway, the break helped reconcile that....by the way this convo is in confidence right ;) lol

    I own this lens aswell some Helios 58mm f2 lenses. To be honest the market price differance between these 2 is crazy, would totally say GO FOR HELIOS! It's a great lens, it just doesn't justify the price, you will for sure shoot with it at f2 to get some sharpness (your copy in the video is very sharp at f1.2, mine is kinda soft). I mean i've bought Helios lenses even for 2$ - 5$. Even fungus ones are so easy to clean. You just can't go wrong with it, but amazing video, really in depth.

    Hey Mark, loving this channel. Quick question, what vintage would you recommend that is fast (max f2.8), wide 16mm-25mm without too much vignetting. I have a 44-2 but it’s so tight on a Bmpcc 6K g2. I liked the Minolta 21mm 2.8 but you said it vignettes up to f8, so curious what you would recommend, that would contrast well with the Helios it could be used in its own right? Thanks, and plz continue to do what you do.

  • @MarkHoltze

    @MarkHoltze

    Жыл бұрын

    The Minolta is a good one, you’re not on full frame so the vignetting would be cut out anyway due to sensor size. It’s only really noticeable at 2.8 and it gets hard to find closed down. Canon nFD 24 2.8 is a nice small affordable option as well. Need to convert to EF which Simmod has mounts now but FD’s on EF mounts were at one point a huge pain because of flange distance. But I really like the Minolta 21

    Such an interesting combo with S1H, Rokkor series glasses are, for some weird reasons, out-of-the-radar for many filmmakers but they have an excellent price/quality balance. I have to investigate why for a certain period 58mm lenses were so popular (think about Helios), nowadays this focal length seems to be disappeared

  • @MarkHoltze

    @MarkHoltze

    It had to do with the reflexing mirror hitting the back on some mounts I think. 58 could avoid that at fast aperture speeds. I’ve seen a few reasons but it’s a question I’ve tried to find a concrete answer to and haven’t found a reliable source saying one way or another yet.

    That would be fun, i always find comparing different focal lengths to be a bit of a challenge as they aren't exactly 1:1 in terms of optical design, but it would be a great experiment to see where the differences lie and ultimately which one performs the best. I'm already a bigger fan of the Minolta build quality, but that's superficial. Thanks for the idea mate!

    I'd like the 50mm f1.7 Rokkor over the Helios to go cheaper. You can't find a comparable Helios anymore for only $30, and the quality is a crap shoot between the eras it was made. The Rokkors are just a nicer lens to use over all, and the quality is pretty consistent. Of course if you want wacky bokeh then the Helios.

  • @KNURKonesur

    I strongly disagree with the title (of course it's personal preference). The Rokkor 58/1.4 (to me) is a much superior lens. It has objectively less shallow depth of field, but subjectively has SO MUCH more bokeh. The specular highlights and cat's eyes are more visible and have a stronger outline. The f/1.2 has 1 more element and is designed 3+4 like the Canon 55/1.2 and 58/1.2, the Zuiko 55/1.2 and several other ultra fast lenses from that time. In my opinion, the 3+3 design of the 58/1.4 and some other double gauss lenses is much more interesting and picturesque, and the 4+3 design of lenses like the Canon 50/1.2LTM or Contax Zeiss 50/1.4 are the sweet spot for portrait shots with a characterful background.
