Your girlfriend looks like she just stepped away from the set of a 1960's French New Wave film. Really nice photos and I appreciate your aesthetic. Rokkors are still among the lesser appreciated vintage lenses with bargains still available with some digging.

Your video really grew on me and the photos you took with film were amazing! I was waiting to see the digital ones but was so blown away by the film results. Subscribed.

You seem like a very nice and kind guy. Just bought the lens today and can`t wait to create some fantastic images with it. The people like you keep my passion for old legacy lenses alive, so keep it up! ;)

The problem I have with the old Minolta lenses is that photographers have “discovered” them and are hoovering them up to use on their mirror less cameras. I’m old so I still like to use them on a Minolta! The same goes for my old Pentax screw mounts. Not so much yet for my Canon FD’s but that might be the next hip discovery. Who can predict. Forgiving my rant, the portraits of your girlfriend are wonderful, dreamy, soft. Thanks.

Thank you so much for your comment. I can certainly see your point and often struggle with it as well. For me, celebrating what we love on this channel and having the side-effect of potentially driving up prices are two sides of the same coin. Personally, I'd like to encourage greater appreciation for what is/was already there (often for a long time) and point to the simple truth that "new" is not always better. Yet, the downside is that this potentially attracts people seeking bargains or "hip" effects. This is certainly not the intention. I am glad to hear you enjoyed the video anyways. :)

I have a nice set of good Canon FD lenses. The 50mm 1.4 is a beast!

Hi Martin thank you for your detailed review your apretaiation for this lenses seems to be so sensitive and kind, is so nice to see somebody talking about hem very much like artistic tools rather than just sharp, contraste machines I have recently found a Minolta 58/1.2 and use it on an olympus m4/3 lookin for blurry background for portraits and so far really pleased and still exploring the visual resources this lens offer to me, something that inmediately noticed and is very important is that the image inspires me and encourages me to make new projects, that reason alone makes me value this lens so much. Take care

Great video. I absolutely love the Minolta MC lenses, before Minolta went to plastic. They have a Leica-esque feel to them- so much so that Leica actually bought and re-branded a couple of their zoom lenses... I love the way they render with digital sensors of my cinema cameras, but am jealous of the feel of the film photographs in this video. Beautiful colours- I forgot how good real film looks...

Intelligent,soft-spoken,you have the eye of an artist and the sensibility of one as well.Excellent photographs and review of said lens.I remember seeing this lens mounted on an SRT-101,an imposing black model locked behind a glass case.Of course I couldn't afford it,but the conversation in the shop was how this would be ideal for available light photography.I thought to myseif,city-scapes at dawn,dusk and at night as well as indoor photos.Oh well ,managed to live without it,this was 1971 or there abouts.Wish you much sucess.Really enjoyed your review ,must see more.

I got this lens with a whole bunch of other Minolta lenses and about 5 Minolta film cameras as a gift from my father in law! Looking at some “cheap” mirrorless options with an adapter to have some fun! Probably going Fuji again! Great video!

Great review! Glad you did Portraits on B&W film, for which I think these lenses were intended. Film shows the "real" character of these vintage lenses.

Max one of your best videos. Most of the photos are outstanding (and not just cose of the lense). I have many Minolta lenses and was looking after one like yours (serial number starts by 276...) probably will end up buying one. I will use it with my Minolta X700 and with a SonyA6000. I have to say Im impressed also by the quality of the scans you get really beautiful. Congratulations on your channel!

The XD-7 stunning! I have just repaired an XD-11 with an "inop" shutter and test shot a roll of Ilford HP5 film in it. I absolutely love the camera, it takes pride of place with my gorgeous little Zeiss Ikon Contessa LK.

I have experience with the FUJI 56mm F1.2 and i will got to that FL and apperture the minute I can again (had to sell all my gear) this one is looking good, and i can see me using it on daily bases. I have an MD lens adaptor for minolta manual lenses, and have already a cople of them, the lack of OIS is tricky on Fuji bodies, but there are situations where they deliver really good results..

I own a Minolta 58mm 1.4. Most of your findings are also valid for the 1.4. Very soft and creamy. I use this lens only for special shootings.

I bought this lens used in 1998 from a camera shop for 79 bucks. It was so so using my film camera back then. When I went to digital in 2006 I found it was much better and now I keep it in my bag most of the time when I want a different look.

Jerry Kelley hey there, I just ask him if this lens is a must keep and short after read your post :). The problem today is that there are really expensive!.

Good commentary and video and those are some impressive photos you captured with this lens. I too enjoy adapting older Minolta lenses to my a6000. I currently have the 58mm f1.4, 50mm f1.7, 45mm f2 all purchased at local antique markets. Always a hard decision of which to bring when we go out for the day.

another great video. My step dad passed down a bunch of vintage Minolta gear, 2 cameras and a bunch of lenses. Although the batch of free 2nd hand vintage lenses was nice, I did not get a 58mm f/1.2.. although, there is a 58mm f/1.4 in the mix... still good.. I only did some quick test shots with it using my Fuji X-Pro2 with adapter, but I'm liking the bokeh rendering.. it's not the smoothest, but not bad and I already have a lens that gives me really good sharpness and bokeh.. messing around with the vintage stuff is fun just to see what it will produce more for (hopefully) unique character. I'm doing test shots with film and the slr Minolta cameras and lenses.. looking forward to seeing the results once I finish the roll and get them developed.

If you're referring to the Minolta Rokkor lenses, I've used almost all of them VERY briefly just to test the effects.. so, far, I think I like the 58mm f/1.4 (=87mm equiv.) and 100mm f/2.5 (=150mm equiv.).. they should make for pretty nice portrait lenses, but I really need to try them outdoors to get a better ideal of their full effect. As with native Fujinon lenses, I can't deny the 56mm f/1.2 is a great portrait lens and currently my go to lens for serious portraits.. other than that, I only have currently 3 other lenses.. an 18mm f/2, 23mm /f2 & 35mm f/2. They are all great for different reasons. The 18mm is perfect for street, especially dense cities like when I went to Hong Kong. The 28mm equiv. field of view fits with such tight settings, obviously, and good for social events where I'm going to be at a dinner table or somewhere crowded indoors. The 35mm makes for a great standard 50mm(ish) field of view, but sometimes too tight.. then that's where I turn to the 23mm which gives me a 35mm(ish) field of view... I don't think there's one perfect all arounder lens that is the ideal "standard" lens.. different situations call for different lenses. I don't mind sticking to one focal length if I have to to work a scene and make a shot with what I have, but sometimes you just don't have the room and especially if you're in a casual situation, I feel you shouldn't let the photographer side of you dictate enjoying your social event by forcing you to try harder than you need to.. just pick a lens that allows you adapt to as much variety of scenarios as you're likely to encounter and go with that... I know if I get too involved in trying to force the "best-composed" shot in a social/casual situation.. it can kill the mood and probably piss off those around me. anyways... Going back to the Minolta lenses.. I have a 16mm f/2.8, but it is a fisheye. If it weren't a fisheye, I might feel more comfortable using it as just a 24mm equiv. field of view, but it has the distortion of a fisheye, so it's a little weird.. I'm used to fisheyes being in the 15mm equiv. range. Have to try using it more to get a feel for how, or if, I can use this sort of lens best. I suppose I could apply some heavy distortion correction in post, but then again maybe I should try and see what I can do with this effect as is? Don't know?.. will investigate and see what is possible. What's neat about this particular lens is that it has 4 built-in filters.. Orange, Yellow, Blue & Clear, if I'm not mistaken. Simply lift and rotate a ring at the end of the lens to switch. It could serve as an interesting way to make black & white photos. Lastly, I have some vintage zoom lenses as well.. Plus, I have a 2x tele converter.. Haven't tried them, but I'd be interested to see just how far I could zoom.. the longest focal length I can achieve with a 400mm lens with the 2x tele converter would equal 1200mm on the Fuji, if my calculations are correct.. Going to need a tripod as there are no OIS in the lens nor in the camera body. The longest equiv. field of view I've shot with was 600mm.. and that got me in very close to a lot of the action when I went to a race car event. This would be double that zoom, I can only imagine the reach... the amount of light I will lose will be quite a bit, though, so I think bright daylight would be the best time I could think to use such a setup. Anyways, keep up the great work. Enjoy your videos on film & cameras & how you go about doing your photo shoots.

What type of adapter would I need for this lens to go on my canon 60d with ef mount?

My favorite lens which was a stand out. Suggest you try Rokkor 45mm f2. A stupendous lens. For some fancy results, try Minolta 24mm f2.8 VFC lens. Though designed for correct field curvature, it can be judiciously used for beautiful out of focus control of peripheral area. Enjoy.

What type of Mount would I need to put this on my canon 60d with ef type mount?

Have you tried comparing the wide open sharpness of this 58 to the with the 50mm f1.2 lens? In your photos, like at 6.59 minutes, have nothing in focus on my 27" screen.

Hey Max, ich wüsste zwar nicht woran ich das Minolta schrauben könnte und möchte mir ungern eine Minolta-Kamera kaufen, aber die Fotos sind ja mal oberhammeraffengeil. Deine Streetshots - Wahnsinn. Sehr kreativ, gute Kompositionen, tolles Auge. Das Porträt von deiner Freundin ist das beste Foto in der Auswahl. Hier zeigt das Objektiv seine geballte Stärke. Atemberaubendes Bokeh! Mach weiter so, du hast eine entspannte Stimme - das Wichtigste um ein guter KZreadr zu sein 😉 Bis in ein paar Jahren in Wetzlar, wenn wir uns bei der Präsentation der M11 sehen. 😬

Yes. Get a fast 50 that allows you to get close, and you can take similar images. Not exactly the same, but you'll still be happy.

Love your videos. Very well explained and I'm sold to this lens. I'm still looking for a good quality adapter so that I can fit this in my FD mount AE-1. Would you happen to have any good adapter recommendations?

Thanks for your kind comment. In general, I can highly recommend Novoflex adapters which served me well in the past. But it seems like they don't produce a Canon FD to Minolta MC/MD mount adapter. Hope you have some luck with a different manufacturer.

I have the f1.4 58mm. Fantastic lens too.

The Rokkor PG 50mm 1.4 is another winner... Never thought I'd recommend it after 20+ years with my Dad's old Rokkor PF 58, but I found an extra-affordable one last month and it is lovely!

@@buleulek5153 You can't really go wrong with any of those lenses. I feel like my 58 produces more contrast, while the 50 offers more sharpness. Still don't have a 135 Rokkor of my own... but Minolta made a ton of those and you can find them at *very* affordable prices.

\Would love to see some night shots in 1.2. Such a nice lense. I have the AIS 50 1.2 nikon, I find it gets too creamy to use during the day especially shots 10M away.

I really like filmic portrait with the teacup and those with the Leica T. I shoot with this lens' contemporary, a Canon FD f/1.2 55mm, which fortunately cost a lot less. Bokeh is a bit kinder too.

Hi Ludwig, vielen Dank für deinen Kommentar. Die Leica M9 ist ein Rangefinder und deshalb deutlich besser für Objektive geeignet, die ein "rangefinder coupling" besitzen. Das Minolta-Objektiv hat nur Sinn, wenn du es mit beispielsweise einer spiegellosen Leica wie der SL, CL oder TL2 nutzt. Die M9 ist darüber hinaus eine Vollformatkamera und das Objektiv deckt ebenfalls ganz normal Vollformat ab. Bei kleineren Sensoren hast du einen Crop-Faktor, jedoch selbstverständlich keine schwarzen Ecken. Hoffe, dass dir das hilft.

This lens looks great ! I'm curious to know what you think of the Rokkor 85mm f/1.7 that you have in the XD7 review, and how you compare it to this 58mm f/1.2. Actually both are in the same price range and are well known for their bokehs, but which one has your preference for portraiture ?

François THAÏLANDE On my XD7 or a full-frame digital camera I would slightly prefer the 85mm for portraits but the 58mm is awesome for certain kinds of portraits/looks as well and I especially like using it on my Leica T with its APS-C sensor. For a crop factor of 1.5, 58mm and such a wide aperture are just perfect. I might make a review of the 85mm lens as well at some point. :)

I recently bought le same xd7 as you (great camera !), and it came with a MD 28mm f/2.8, so I would like to add something longer now. I mostly watching for a keeper, a good and unique minolta lens ^^ I'm curious to know if you have any recommendations, as you looks to know stuffs about Minolta lens.

Do you get more detail on digital ones? I have sony a6000 and I'm checking this one, or the 50 one or even the 55 fd canon., Many thanks...

Yes, of course. The amount of details is quite impressive on a digital camera. As mentioned in the video, the lens is a bit soft wide open but the amount of detail significantly increases when stopped down a bit. I can certainly recommend it for digital use.

Thanks for the great review! Btw, awesome photos, especially the portraits are so beautiful. I’m so lucky because I just heard that my parents in law from India have this lens on a Minolta XK which they bought in the 70s and that they will give it to me when they come to Germany in August. I’m planning to use it on my Fuji XT20 as a portrait lens. I never shot film and just thought it might be a good idea to try it out with this. Do you know how this camera is? Is it worth bringing it from India?

Hi Doug, sorry about my late response. In the last couple of months, I found myself increasingly using this lens on my Leica T (APS-C sensor) for digital portraits, often preferring it over my beloved vintage Leica Summicron. The lens brings about a special character and when stopped down one or two stops is amazingly sharp, retains a wonderful bokeh, and offers solid subject-background-separation. After all, the 58mm lens almost behaves like a 85-90mm portrait lens on an APS-C camera. So yes, I can certainly recommend this setup. But you might want to take a look at the Nikon f/1.2 lens as potential alternatives as well.

thanks Max for getting back to me ...very kind for you to take the time to do so ...I'm soon going to make the effort on this idea...I am going with the 1.4 version initially to see if this works on my camera body.I shoot soft sensual and have rented the Nikon 58mm 1.4 and love it...I don't even care that it's not always tac sharp because I tend to just love the feel of that 58 more so than needing it to be sharp the way others would want...call that artistic style ...I just don't tend to care about vivid clarity as I do soft impressionism ....do you have an IG account I can follow?...would love to see more of your work

Usually there is no glass in an adapter as it only ensures the correct distance between sensor and the back of the lens.

The Minolta 58mm f/1.2 was introduced in 1968 and replaced by the 50mm f/1.2 in 1978. The MC II version was sold from 1970 to 1973. I looked it up in a Minolta July 1971 US price guide where it was priced at $175. That's the equivalent of $1,314.40 in 2023 dollars (when adjusted for inflation).

I paid $300 for it on 9-2022. I am using one of my Minolta lenses for the taking lens on the SLR Magic 2X 50mm Anamorphic rig. It might be this one.

I know the f1.2 is a challenge, but do try to get used to 2.8 , it is so much more forgiving

Not at all expensive from eBay. In various photos of this lens I have seen a brown tint which an indication of the decay of radioactive Thorium. Thorium was very common inside premium lenses of that period.

Decaying Thorium elements supposedly regain their original color after enough exposure to ultraviolet light. I have a yellowed Rokkor SI 28mm f/2.5, but it's easy enough to correct on my Lumix by setting a custom white balance - so I'll probably just let it stay visibly radioactive. ⚡

Wow, can't hear a word you're saying, the bass level on your mic is way too high. Sounds like the mic is in your chest. Other than that, great photos, the detail and softness is wonderful.

UltraClue Thanks so much for your comment. And please excuse the sound. I was still experimenting with the mic and post-production. I also happen to have a rather deep voice. :)

If you call this lens SHARP, I don't know what to say without assorting to more confrontational language. I can only call this kind of "reviews" too "ROMANTIC". That's as nice as I can get when watching this type of twisted description of reality.

I appreciate that you have opinions, but could you put some substance behind that drum beating and offer what other lenses you have in mind when leaving a comment like that? Otherwise, your contribution seems a little more like just ego-driven gear rage.

I watched about ⅓ of lens reviews from this channel and numerous reviews from others, on KZread or otherwise, not to mention I have personally used 50 lenses or so over the years. I have seen SHARP images from various photographers and reviews, including those from Max. So I can tell sharp images from the lesser ones. If you can’t tell the difference or if you consider the images from this video review are sharp enough to be called SHARP, even by vantage lens standards, or compared to other lenses Max has taken pictures with, I rest my case. There is no need for further argument.

I gave you the opportunity here to put some substance behind your words and you've returned to chest beat some more and still haven't put any substance to back up anything you've said. If you know how to substantiate or prove one’s impression of a bunch of images on KZread being not sharp enough to be called “shot with a very sharp lens” or not as sharp as other pictures taken by the same person with different gear, please let me know. 2. I have no intention of making contribution here. But I have the right to voice out my disagreement with the host’s definition for a “very sharp lens”. Do I need scientific proof of my impression and feeling? 3. Did you just start name calling? I thought you were better than that. 😔

Well a lot of people including my self are gear snobs , wanting that new thing whatever it may be , and then we go take pictures and they turn out shitty , not a single good picture here . But dont get me wrong , its probably a bit better then i would do but its still real low artistic value . I would recommend Canon 5D, because its close to film look, but you get help from Digital , making you life easier , you can shoot 1000 photos and pick the best , while on film you really have to know what you are doing or you will miss the shoot .Tho i understand why film , i like it too , but its hard .

There isn’t a finite amount of film, if you buy it they’ll keep making it. If you want film go buy some.
