Are Rokkor's rockstars or what? NOTE: The heavy vignette at the corners of the 21mm are from the lens Sim Ring that's coming into the FOV of the lens. Remove it and it goes away. Also not visible when shooting video unless in open gate 6k mode on the S1H.

Rokkor lenses are my favourite vintage lenses: good building quality, very sharps, controlled chromatic aberrations, beautiful colours (Minolta colours) and a bokeh full of character

God, it does my heart good to see some Minolta love. Don't have the 21mm, but I have the 16mm fisheye, 28 2.8, 50 1.4, 135 2.8, 200 2.8 and 300 4.5 and can say they're all magical lenses, with the 200 2.8 being my bar-none favorite of the bunch. Sharp, but not clincially sharp. They just have a magical quality to them. I go back and forth on whether I like them or the Takumars better TBH.

Might be worth keeping an eye out, but you're covered I think. They've crept past the Takumar's for me just because they so darn consistent out of the box. The colours on the Tak are wildly different because of some thoriated glass etc. Easy to reverse, but still.

I’ve been looking for a Takumar 17 fish eye. Will have to look at the Minolta 16mm. How do they compare? Do you know?

The rokkor 50mm 1.7 was my first Vintage lens and is still one of my favorites to use. Bought the 135mm 2.8 afterwards and was shooting with both of them vor weeks and months. There is something magic about the Minoltas.

Yeah, have notice the quality of Rokkers and the higher prizes. I started buying the wrong Vintage lenses zooms and bad primes. But that bad luck has changed, so happy with my 4 latest vintage. Vivitar 24 f2, Rikenon XR 50 f2, Konica 135 f2.5 and last Pentax 200 f2.5. Love the color contrast and how sharp they are on those and appreciate the importans of the color rendering on a good photo.

You don’t even understand how geeked I am that your doing another Rokkor video .. very rare to get in depth run through of them so I’m in the process or putting together a cine mod set 21MM 2.8 is on that list

Great video. My first SLR was a Minolta so I’ve bought a couple of old lenses,no complaints, the 58 f1.4 can be very atmospheric and it’s a beautiful hunk of metal and glass.

Definitely rockstars! And my wish for Minolta lens videos have been granted!! 😂😂 I agree that the focal lengths work well together as it helps you see the composition in a different way. I only lack a wide prime lens, but I already have an XF 18-55mm so I don't think I need to buy a wide prime anytime soon.

Definitely don't need more, but if I were to start building out a set, THESE would be them absolutely.

Like you, I found what a nice combo can get when you put oposite lenses. My case is far less drastic, but still gets that feeling you exposed. I use a 24mm stm from canon and an adapted Pentax 135mm, being both far distinctive: a cropped 24mm turned into a 38mm, but still has some of it's true nature distortion and a short telephoto turned into a long telepohoto. As i'm working a lot with day-time natural light or strobes, dealing with a bokeh stuff like a 50mm f-something has gone to oblivion.

Awesome video Mark! Always enjoy your content. I own a full set of Minolta Rokkors myself (17 lenses) and love them! I already own full sets of Leica-R, Canon FD and Zeiss Classic but I find myself grabbing the Rokkers more often when I want a vintage lens for video and photos. Outstanding build quality and usability and gorgeous colors. In fact a few of them that I acquired look like they have never been used - they operate like new! Took my time to build a mint set before everyone else made a run on them and drove up prices. My set includes: 21mm f/2.8 MC-X 1973 24mm f/2.8 MDII 1978 28mm f/2.8 MC-X 1975 28mm f/2.0 MDII 1978 35mm f/1.8 MC W.Rokkor-HH (Outstanding!) 1973 35mm f/1.8 MDIII 1981 50mm f/1.4 MC-X 1973 (most used for video) 50mm f/1.4 MDI 1977 50mm f/1.4 MDIII 1981 (has the most "clean" look of the 50mm wide open) 58mm f/1.2 MC-X (Outstanding!) 1973 85mm f/1.7 MC-X (Outstanding! Smoothest bokeh of all my Rokkors) 1973 100mm f/2.5 MC-X 1973 100mm f/2.5 MDIII (Outstanding and light! My favorite carry around lens) 1981 135mm f/2.8 MCI 1966 135mm f/2.8 MDII 1978 200mm f/4 MD (super light) 1978 35-70mm f/3.5 zoom (the best vintage zoom I have ever used! Nearly identical IQ to my primes above.

Can you recommend to get 21 + 35-70 f 3.5 macro or rokkor X instead of all that primes to make the job done (video)? What about tele zooms, beercan or 35-70 brother (75-200), worth to get instead of few primes for fast work?

@@mazurindependentfilmmaking2713 I got my 35-70 zoom for b roll on a second camera. I like primes for video for my main camera because they are faster. If I had the 21mm and wanted another prime I would get the 50mm 1.4 which would cover most everything.

They are for sure! Warmer than Zeiss for sure and I own a complete set of both. GREAT VIDEO. People may not know Leica helped insure uniform color and contrast between all MC lenses in a partnership with Minolta in the early 70s.

With every video, I'm getting more and more exited about these lenses! By the time I finally receive them, I won't even need to test them, your videos give me everything I need and so happy I decided to buy this set when I did 😄

A few options, not a lot. This is a decent one still at a good price. Tak 20 isn’t fast but it’s much more affordable. Super fast on ultra wides are kind of pointless unless you want to do a lot of Astro.

I still have a few more vintage Nikkors on my list to buy first... but those Rokkors might convince me to add yet another mount to the collection.

Big fan of the Rokkor 50 and I'm on the lookout for the 200. The 50 gives me the best night shots in my street photography. Trying to learn the 135 for street, I keep it in my bag every day. Are Rokkors rockstars? oh yeah~ If you're looking for some lenses to put on your horizon, I'm keen on seeing some more of the vintage long-primes, in the 300-500 range. Your thoughts on the usability of the mirrored lenses, for example.

Currently have 28mm f3.5, 50mm f1.4. 55mm f1.7, 58mm f1.4, 85mm f1.7 and 135mm f2.8 fast becoming my go to lenses.

They have a motorized option, but it's expensive. This one is just standard slider ,but after basically a year of looking at options I went with this over a motorized one. The way you can set the resistance and how well it slides plus the fact I'm almost going to be operating it for 99% of the work I do, it just made sense. This thing will survive a nuke blast, very fast to setup, no tools or bloody cables. It's fantastic.

Loved the video! Still amazes me now you manage to find such beautiful locations and of course some gorgeous shots! Also what do you think of mamiya lenses, I’ve seen the medium format lenses become really popular (and expensive) but the 35mm lenses are going for pretty damn cheap right now!

Thanks, locations are everything. I'm there every Monday/Tuesday for my daughters riding and that car made it photo worthy lol. Edit: Not interested really in medium format lenses unless i'm shooting on a medium format sensor for video, but that's just me.

Minolta lenses are amazing! Got a bunch of them ! 50 1.4 Rokkor PG 50mm 3.5 Macro 28mm 2.8 and 3.5 versions, 200mm F4.5 both MC and MD versions. Some SRTs too.

Great video! I own the 35 f2.8. I really like the colors but at the moment rarely use it. If I shoot 35 most of the time I'm using the new Sigma f2 which I really like as well. But when autumn has fully arrived I think the Minolta will get used more. I am looking for a Minolta 85 1.7 as a portrait lens.

Yes! Ive started building a set of these as they can be found a lot cheaper than leicas and contax zeiss and have a 35, 50, and 85, all faster than f2. I love crazy wides and that 21 looks so nice, was also looking at the 28 f2 for my next one. Also an S1H shooter :) EDIT; And you’re definitely right about them being a secret haha, when I was researching them there was not as near as much info out there as for other lenses. Also, I’m almost wrapped on a short film shot on these, and I think I’m in love. Though, I really think I’m going to need to get them cine-modded lol

Yes, I believe Rokkors are rockstars. I only have four and all in a limited range of focal lengths (50 f/2, 50 f/1.7, 45 f/2, 28 f/3.5), but the results they constantly give me speak for themselves. Cheers!

I have a Minolta rokkor 17mm f4 and the 24mm 2.8. I absolutely love the 24, while the 17 really feels like the perfect lens for gimbal and handheld for lifestyle and documentary video content.

I feel like I could shoot an entire feature film on my 24mm 2.8 and my 58mm 1.4 . Not as extreme as using a 21 and a 200, but a similar idea of having a one for wides and one for details.

My very first vintage lens was the Minolta 50mm f1.4, and it is still my favourite lens. It was also the reason I started playing around with older lens. Now I also have the Minolta 28mm f2.8 and thats also a very nice lens. got both of them for about $100 AUD

20 years ago my dad gave me his Minolta film camera along with a few lenses: A zoom which I think will be hard to use in video, and the 50mm f1.4. Today I acquired an adapter to attach MD lenses to my Lumix S5 and wow. It's really hard to quantify, but the sharp areas of the image just seem to pop more than with the S5 kit lens. Are the colors more saturated? Is it softer? I'm going to have to do a lot of comparisons to figure it out, but I like it and it's definitely drastically different.

What do you mean right? 21 and 19 are fairly common for ultra wides of that time. Not sure if they have a 24, but they have a 28.

I ended up buying the 200mm and the 300mm. Excellent image quality. I will be using them at my son's baseball game today.

Yeah - so many lenses and so little time. I have Zeiss Jena 35mm and 135mm, Canon FD 200mm f4 and a Helios 44m-6. I love em all but i have noticed the Flektogon 35mm just lives on my A7SII.. I want a 21mm too!

There should be an MD to EF mount, but I think minoltas might have a hard time with this due to flange distance of EF. I don’t use EF so I can’t say 100% unfortunately

The Contax Zeiss lens is a much better lens from a traditional point of view. It’s way more expensive though and not sure the cost is reflected in the image delta. The Contax Zeiss is the best wide angle lens I’ve seen from this older SLR era, it holds up even compared to the ZF, but it’s hard to quantify that. For the money the Minolta is the best bang for buck out of the lot.

@@MarkHoltze Thanks, I am shooting a movie with both 4k and 8k, as well as Super 16 and especially a lot of 35mm movie footage so will stick with the Zeiss lenses. The difference in cost is negligible on a film so I will stick with the Zeiss. I have never been much of a fan of the bokeh from the Minoltas, to be honest, they differ even from lens to lens, but then again, so does Zeiss. The biggest issue is lens design. The Biotar and Biometar and Planars are my favorites, but the Distagon is nice to no doubt. I do not like the Sonnar as much, too much focal shift in some lenses and boring bokeh I find.

The pictures in your video have a blue overcast and low contrast overall. Is it the lenses' characteristics or just the software adjustment?

Could be colour profile, of camera, white balance. Colour bias in modern photos is more influenced by the camera, not the lenses so much. With the exception of thoriated lenses.

Mark, I have the opportunity to buy a Rokkor 28 2.8 for 50 euros mint, and 50mm 1.2 for 290 euros. Are these good deals? @@MarkHoltze Well, since now I know you are reading these: I love your shout-outs to your Dad and Grandfather; you are enthusiastic without being too wild; you have a good mix of talking head/product shots/videography/graphics/just-right length. In the past few weeks, I made the colossal mistake of dipping my toe into the vintage lens section of youtube. So many great lenses! I bought my first maunual focus lens last week (TTArtisan 50mm 1.2--amazing), and I have to say the differenence in manual focusing a manual lens versus an modern AF lens is night and day. That might be a good future episode for you: walking the viewer through how much easier and effective it is to pull focus on a manual lens. My first vintage lens is on the way: Minolta MC Rokkor 135mm 2.8... mint, with the case, for $52 total, Happy Easter!

Have you tested them with focal reducers .. ?

I haven't, never felt the need to go wider than FF on a FF sensor.

Unless you like to grind your lenses and rub the dust everywhere, you also won't have to worry about radiation with any of the Takumars ^^ I've got only one Rokkor, a Rokkor-PF 50mm 1.7 that I got cheaply for a SR T100X I found on a flea market, just to have a nice lens to pair it with and shoot eventually. It's still perfectly smooth and seems well-built. From what I've heard, Rokkors are among the best lenses of that era.

Doesn't everyone sleep with their favorite radioactive lenses tucked inside their pillows at night? I suppose it might be a little scary if you were to shatter a radioactive lens and weren't sure where all the glass flew, but I've never personally seen a lens shatter. It's usually just the housing. Seems hard to do.

I've been using Rokkors since a very long time. IMHO they are simply superb, I don't know about a single rokkor that is a bad lens. If you have the opportunity test the 17mm F4. This lens is absolutely fantastic. Other top notch picks are the MD 135mm F2 and the MD 100mm F2.5 they are razor sharp wide open from edge to edge. Even the humble MD 50mm F2 is very very sharp.

I never liked kinda greenish tint Rokkor lenses produced while shooting colour slide films. What I've done quite a lot as a teenager. You don't have those problems if you are shooting B&W films or today if digital camera is being used. Now that being said those lenses where just as sharp as the competition of those days...

I’m yet to get a wide angle lens. Like the colours on this lens. I have a Takumar 200 f4 not the sharpest though….. Need to stop buying lenses…. But keep watching these blasted videos….. tempted as anything.. I’m just awaiting the arrival of a Meyer optic one… I like the Konica 50mm 1.4 lens now that’s a find…

Special lenses, indeed. Drive in venue/footage also special. (Recall that place in your prior vids.) Hope you are up to date on your tetanus shots😁. Surprised that so much movie gear remained after all those years. Just don’t eat the berries.

I treated very lightly and held my breath when inside, didn't like the burn out decay and the idea of it entering my lungs. But i was quite surprised to see the door to that place now open. I show my expired film video there and that building was fort knox locked up.

Ah man that 21mm looks so tempting, but closer to £400 for a mint copy in the UK. Already have the Tomioka/Chinon 21mm, do I need another 21mm? Oh so tempting.

@@MarkHoltze I’m really tempted, just need to find a mint one close to London. Rokkors are more easily available in North America, but tougher to find here. I have the MD-3’s (Non Rokkors) 24mm 2.8, 28mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 50mm 1.7, 50mm 2, 85mm 2. Rokkors That I have are the 24mm 2.8, 35mm 1.8, and 58mm 1.4 Question I have is the Rokkor 21mm 2.8 anywhere as good as the Contax 21mm? If you did a one on one comparison is it even close?

Ya i'm rarely going to shoot 3.5 on this 200, I think I had it set to 5.6 most of the time, you still get that nice separation because of the telephoto properties, without any of the open lens mush.

@@MarkHoltze pls soon ,hunt this down and give it a try, the russian copy lens, the m39 mount industar 61. its a 50 mm f 2.8 lens lively vintage design, and with the m39 adapter for mirrorless, thats only 1/3 the thickness of a m42 adapter.. its a real unpolished diamond.. make sure to get a sharp copy, the optic quality from industar can ve playing ,,russian roulette,, LOL, you never know...

Minolta is cheap until you get the ultra wide and short telephotos, both rather popular focal lengths. Nikon takes the cake for value, since they made lenses in enormous qualities.

I've been noticing that the faster 35mm or wider Minolta lenses seem to be in the $300 to $500 range. The f2.8 lenses are more reasonable. How do the slower lenses compare in quality? How do you think the Nikon equivalents compare to the Minolta lenses?

@@MarkHoltze There are about 4.5k views on this video at the moment and there are about that many MD mount lenses for sale on eBay right now.

The intro blew me away, literally. Minolta's are a little out-of-radar in filmmaking but, in my opinion, these lenses have a lot of character and good visual quality, they are in my buy list -together my tons of other glass, but that's another story :-) -
