Comparison : Nikkor Noct vs Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello Friends,
I love vintage glass and this is a comparison I've been wanting to do for a really long time. The main difficulty is logistics as finding these two magnificent lenses is no easy feat. The Nikkor Noct, I looked for 4 years until I found one, the Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.2, I got it by chance because it needed repair. Finally I was able to compare these two great and legendary vintage lenses.

Both lenses are true artworks of mechanics and optics, I don't think we'll see again such quality in newer lenses.

excellent compilation !! thanks for all the work involved. On 58s, while ago I got my hands on an old 5.8cm f1.4 nikkor (as a paperweight, I bought it along with others hoping to be able to repair it). After cleaning , recementing the back doublet and readjusting everything, it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It's a different optical scheme than all the 50-55 nikkors (7 elements, but 4 at front, 3 at back), and as a result it has a much softer bokeh at 1.4, almost without any of those typical double lines. The field curvature is huge, it's never get super sharp at far edges, but the center performs quite well (it has less "glow" than any of the iterations of the 50 1.4 or 55 f1,2; less lateral chromatic aberrations than newers 50 1,4, but slightly greater longitudinal CA) Very special for portraits !!

Sounds like a very interesting lens indeed, never had one of those in my hands. They seem to be rather uncommon. You put a lot of work in restoring it, congratulations. Working with lenses you've fixed yourself is always special, a bit like cooking your own food, it always tastes better. 😊

The Noct looks much better. I have to wonder if your poarticular Rokkor is a bit of a bum lens. I would love to see a rematch. Especially with the version of the Rokkor that came out circa 1973. I think that was the 3rd version.

Good try, but A bit unfair on Minolta with its yellow haze, that reduces the sharpness and colour rendition. Looks like you have a radioactive lens that you must either enjoy its yellow vintage look, but not compare it to the clean glass, or treat the yellow haze under a strong UV light for a few days, before doing comparison.

Minolta Rokkor is decentred... or bad repair. Maybe dexter scene poorly focused. A BAN table lenses swapped Minolta in left and Nikon in right. Everyone who takes photos with a Minolta lens knows its Minolta colors and Minolta cromatic aberation. They are definitely on the left picture...

Minolta has the sauce. I think the coating has a bit more contrast, and more glow, awaking its warmth. Minolta Rokkor coating elements come from fresh spring volcanic water pools in the mountains. Much better for skin. I know skin. I spend lots of time with thorium. The cost of each lens is their most drastic difference. Rokkors for the W yet again.

@@JonathanMahoneyDOP It was obvious to me before we got to 2.8. After that, wel, I already have 50, 55, 58mm 1.4 Minoltas. None of which cost me more than 40, and two came with Minolta bodies. People forget that a 58mm 1.4 lens on apsc is an 87mm 1.4 lens. Try finding an 87mm 1.4 lens for less than 600.

The thing with the Noct is the very special rendition it produces, like a painting as put on the video. Some may love it, others hate it, no middle ground. Cheers.
