The Best Ear Pro For Shooters?

I have spent a large part of my life shooting and a decade of that has been as a pro shooter in the defence sector. One of my greatest concerns has been hearing protection. If I didn't take the subject seriously I would likely be deaf by now. I have tried just about every type of hearing protection on the market. I have finally found one that keeps me safe, is comfortable to wear and doesn't interfere with my gun or my glasses. Take a look as I run through the different options from budget to premium and discuss the pros and cons of each...
If you like the ear pro that I have chosen as my preference then check out:

I can wear MSA Sordin with gel pads all day long. Yes they are comparatively expensive, but health and safety isn't where you want to scrimp to save money. I bought mine with gel pads pre-fitted.

I’ve worked in an industrial setting for over 20 years (constant 100-130dBs depending on exact location) and ridden motorbikes for 10 year. I’ve found the custom moulded type to be the best in terms of protection (in the region of 30dB attenuation) and long wear comfort. After my last mould taking (through work) I contacted the ear plug company and ordered a set of their “shooters” model. Conversations can be heard easily but they (and this is going by the literature provided) non electronically activate to provide up to 33dB attenuation for sudden noises (up from constant 15dB). We have annual hearing checks and my hearing is still excellent for my age.

Good to know. Unfortunately they cause my ears to become very sore. I have tried lubes and such with them. If that wasn't an issue they would be fine for me.

That’s a real shame (wasn’t sure as you didn’t specifically mention the custom moulded silicone types). Worth considering for others though, especially as they self adjust without the need for batteries……and they come in such lovely vibrant colours 😉🤣

I hate the earmuff type of protection for many reasons, so I went to my local hearing aid shop where I had Moldes made of my inner ears and active ear protection units were fitted by Censdigital, near to where I live in Rochester Kent. I have used them for over ten years (yes, it is about time I had some new moulds taken) and if required I can wear them all day. They are volume adjustable and can act as hearing enhancement that cuts off immediately a loud noise reaches the sensors. They were quite expensive to buy but over ten years they have become a cheap option.

As well as beung a life long shooter, these would be awesome for my work in aviation as i have spent many hours on ground runs etc and even in the hangar when either I or work colleagues are riverting, especially when inside a fuel tank imagine a .308 on auto hitting the metal box your in its an insane noise! Great video cheers 🤟🇭🇲

I’ve shot with army surplus ear defenders and that were fine so that is another option

How many hours a day do you shoot? I used those and they are terrible. Even the army throw them in the bin.

@@thatgearguy I shoot 2-3 hours a week to be honest

@@Jamespass11 fair enough. You might get away with it. But 5 hours a day, they will leave you exposed.

The most comfortable ear pro i've ever worn is the cheapy Howard Leight electronic muff type, however i have killed 5 pairs, 2 through the cabling breaking/the electronics blinking on and off, and 3 in the rain. Thats the reason I ended up going for the Sordin Extreme Pro X. I do however find them very uncomfortable to wear for more than 4hrs at a time (I regularly shoot for 8hrs+). When it comes time to replace those I'm going to try the Peltor Sportacs

Did you use the gel earpiece upgrade? Exactly what part was uncomfortable?

@thatgearguy Yes ive got the gel upgrades. Its just the general positioning and pressure. Everyones head is a different shape and the size and position of your ears makes a difference. Just my experience of them.
