Fitness - Reality vs Social Media

Do you ever wonder what planet some of these "influencers" are even on. Training at 4am, eating the "perfect diet", attending gyms which are kitted with every possible machine and free weight... While the rest of us have to work, look after family, travel, use sub standard gyms and make the most out of the food available...
I talk about my fitness journey over the last few months which has been hindered by a new job and a house move. Can we still get results in sub standard conditions? Of course!!!
If you are middle aged, out of shape and considering a fitness journey but wonder if you have the time then this video is dedicated to you!

If you want results, you have to do the work. However, the work need not be excessive, if you set realistic goals, know what you are doing (or seek advice) and keep showing up. Be pragmatic when life hits you (because it will). But keep showing up. Be consistent. All or nothing, will likely result in nothing. A little goes a long way. Just don't loose the habit and get back on your regular track as soon as life allows. It is not always easy. But it is possible. You have a choice. Also (!), congratulations to you and your family with your new home 🙂.

I took nine months off of work. After returning to work, I realized how nice it was to not have to work at all during the day. The eight hours during my 9 to 5 feels so much more consequential now that I’ve experienced what it’s like not to work for nine months. You don’t appreciate until you’ve lost it. It is so much harder to get my fitness goals in when I am doing a 9 to 5 job. I don’t want to get up and work out before work. So I do it after work. But that’s also when people wanna hang out with me. For example, this Monday I’m supposed to go paddle boarding with a group. This Tuesday I am barbecuing for my family. Probably will not get a workout in on Monday. If I do get a workout in on Tuesday, it’s gonna be a real late at night one. One thing I did do was get an under the desk treadmill, and this helps. But it’s also an example of the amount I have to go out of my way to try to stay in shape. Cool to hear your thoughts. I sure would like to be one of those blokes who gets up early in the morning, films something, goes to bed and then gets woken up for milk and cookies. Unfortunately, I don’t have a huge social media following. I’ve got to work like most people for a living.

Ha I wouldn't mind that either but alas I do not think it likely! I will stick with the day job and workout where I can..

The biggest problem working away other than the lack of decent food midday (site burger vans) is the danger of being swept into drinking every night. Especially difficult when you are only visiting places for a few days at a time and the lads want some new conversation after a hot day or the client likes to party. You end up coming home for a rest!

Agree. We get free booze and I travel a lot. That is a big reason I dont drink. I know a lot of alcoholics in my line of work.

I am a young guy but I work, go to class and study most of my day. I barely have time to go to the gym but I still make the effort, some days I am really tired and just dont go. I cant imagine waking up at 4 am every day considering I get out of class at 10 pm and then have to drive home to make some dinner and finally sleep after a long day. I use social media sometimes and I do get the usual gym bro reel where these guys look amazing and they are my age, sometimes it feels quite bad knowing I will never look as good but I am still comfortable with my body most of the time, I think comparing yourself to others is pretty bad specially if you are comparing yourself to someone in social media because in the real world most of this shit doesnt even matter.

There is a chick called Rayna V, she is a total badass. When I see her vids, I keep asking myself how come she's got the time? Then when I did more research it turned out she has the time bcuz it's part of her work. Do martial arts instead of straight gym and don't push yourself too much.

First off thanks for the vid and info/opinions. What is your thoughts on intermittent fasting say like a 16:8 intermittent fasting diet and doing weights building muscle?

  • @thatgearguy

I dont think it would be detrimental to muscle growth as long as you got your calories and macros in. But there is the rub - might be a lot of clean cals to jam into a short time period..

My biggest issue is I don't know where to start. And I find it hard to find a program I can do and follow because there's so much conflicting information.

  • @thatgearguy

You dont need a "Program". Go to a gym, copy the guys who are in good shape. Eat home cooked healthy food. That will yield great results on its own. Then worry about programs in 6 months or a year when you hit a plateau. The hardest step is the first one..

@@thatgearguy I did my first session this morning. My gym is pretty sub par for equipment but it's more than enough for me right now. I did chest and triceps, felt really good doing it. Looking forward to legs tomorrow.

Way to go dude the most important thing is just to keep going back. You’ll learn how to lift correctly and develop good habits in time if you focus on that and keep trying.

As you say it's ok for these content creators because that's all they probably do. The bloke doing a 12-hour night shift physically grafting won't be doing any crazy stuff and his need for the gym will be reduced because of his work...In a way he is getting paid to train ! One final thought with regards to lack of training facilities have you ever tried dynamic tension as an alternative when no facilities are available ? 👍

  • @thatgearguy

    @thatgearguy

Thanks bud. Yes. In fact there is some good science behind it supporting lean mass retention. It wont grow any muscle on its own but it certainly helps retain what you have. Interestingly I saw a legitimate study which demonstrated increased muscle growth in those who combined dynamic tension with standard lifting over the standard lifting group.

@@thatgearguy That's great info thanks many years ago I couldn't pin down any independent studies on the subject and I also got the impression it was not that easy to achieve results ? Anyway your new home sounds great hopefully we get to see a little bit of it ✌️
