At age 40, Rich Roll (@richroll) made the decision to overhaul the sedentary throes of overweight middle age. Walking away from a career in law, he reinvented himself as a globally recognized ultra-distance endurance athlete, bestselling author, and host of the wildly popular Rich Roll Podcast, one of the world’s most listened to podcasts, with more than 200 million downloads.
Named one of the “25 Fittest Men in the World” by Men’s Fitness and the “Guru of Reinvention” by Outside magazine, Rich shares his inspirational story of addiction, redemption, and athletic prowess in his bestselling memoir, Finding Ultra, and in the cookbooks/lifestyle guides The Plantpower Way and The Plantpower Way: Italia, which he co-authored with his wife Julie Piatt.
Rich is a graduate of Stanford University (where he was a member of their dynastic, multiple-NCAA-championship men’s swimming program) and Cornell Law School. He has been featured on CNN and on the cover of Outside and has been profiled in The New York Times, Forbes, ESPN, and many other prominent media outlets.
Please enjoy!
This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens. I get asked all the time, “If you could only use one supplement, what would it be?” My answer is usually AG1 by Athletic Greens, my all-in-one nutritional insurance. I recommended it in The 4-Hour Body in 2010 and did not get paid to do so. I do my best with nutrient-dense meals, of course, but AG further covers my bases with vitamins, minerals, and whole-food-sourced micronutrients that support gut health and the immune system.
Right now, Athletic Greens is offering you their Vitamin D Liquid Formula free with your first subscription purchase-a vital nutrient for a strong immune system and strong bones. Visit AthleticGreens.com/Tim to claim this special offer today and receive the free Vitamin D Liquid Formula (and five free travel packs) with your first subscription purchase! That’s up to a one-year supply of Vitamin D as added value when you try their delicious and comprehensive all-in-one daily greens product.
This episode is brought to you by Eight Sleep! Eight Sleep’s Pod Pro Cover is the easiest and fastest way to sleep at the perfect temperature. It pairs dynamic cooling and heating with biometric tracking to offer the most advanced (and user-friendly) solution on the market. Simply add the Pod Pro Cover to your current mattress and start sleeping as cool as 55°F or as hot as 110°F. It also splits your bed in half, so your partner can choose a totally different temperature.
And now, my dear listeners-that’s you-can get $250 off the Pod Pro Cover. Simply go to EightSleep.com/Tim or use code TIM at checkout.

@@alxghyu1844 I was listening to him in some other podcast where he portrays himself as a fat screwups in the past. Super sick, , alcoholic, etc.. Well when I imagine a sick alcoholic, I do see completely different picture than what he was. To me his story seems soooooo overblown. It resonates with people of course, gives them hope and maybe inspiration. Which is all good. But man is he lying....

Thanks for this fab video!! I'm into it for 15 minutes and crying. It will be my 81st Birthday in 18 days and I haven't been sick since I left my family circus at age 38 ... no doctors... no meds ... just sadness and anger... I became a serious problem drinker for 6 years. I found the 12 Steps and AA book at age 44 and it was exactly what I was looking for all of my life ... sober ever since! I don't fit into the AA profile or AlAnon although I praise them. I stay sane and happy because I'm an avid counselor, herbalist and artist also obsessed every day with AA materials and Speakers. Just lonely for a group that fits.

As someone who experienced trauma in the household between the ages of 5 to 16 it took me until the last few years to start to feel more whole and healed. That means I felt inadequate for where I was at for my age. I am 40 and for the first time feel like I have enough stability to start getting the other parts of my life set. I didn't get to focus on college and didn't learn about credit scores and financial well being. My husband spent 20 years as a monk. We are just learning how to "adult" in our 40s together. Conversations like this are refreshing and give me a lot of hope.

Great interview from an introverted intuitive who speaks my language. I find it hard to motivate myself to exercise because I'm getting older, had a non healing base of fifth avulsion for years, then a lengthy post viral lung problem and see myself as doomed to deteriorate regardless, but there's no excuse not to do some meditation and yoga which might actually steer me to being more productive as opposed to languishing and dreading the future which is currently very limited and controlled by others. Being limited is an opportunity to focus though.

Thank you Tim and Rich 🌟 this conversation is truly honest & humble; and a conversation with good nuggets of wisdom for anyone willing to change their life for the better - ‘mood follows action’ and start where you are with that ‘dusty bike in the garage’ is a real step forward away from ‘analysis paralysis’ to doing - again mood follows action - wake up every morning and get to work regardless of how I feel is such simple advice, but makes such a difference to my life 🙌

What u talk of at around 1 hr 55 mins, that is awesome! We're evolving big time. The fundamentals of our subconscious, and spiritual ways of finding progress in general is changing from having to suffer to finally letting go of what used to be a need, which is this hardship that all who found, quote on quote, success, include a substantial amount of focus on in their bio. What people may miss is that, everyone suffered, success, or not! Anyway, great podcast!! Was a joy to listen to. Thanks-

In reality, life demands constant reinvention of ourselves; some will dance those steps more often than others. Lucky are those who have developed into their best version of themselves. I'm ready now for a remake; this is an encouraging and helpful conversation. Thank you!

Everything in life that provides postive outcomes takes time for us to see the results. (Exercise, strength, inner physical health, emotional strength, long term wealth, strong relationships, family bonds, etc.) Everything in life that provides instant results is usually bad for us. (Fast food, treats, social media, tv, alcohol, drugs, cheating on spouse, etc) We need to learn and teach this simple law of incremental compounded gains over long periods of time. Instant gratification serves a purpose to appease an immediate need of some sort, but it will not pay off over time. Delayed gratification and compounded interest resulted from incremental gains is indeed a topic to explore...and teach our young people.

this podcast reminded me of something i read the other day. "something sad but also kind of sweet i've noticed about human mirroring trait (i.e. seeing someone regularly preform a physical or verbal action and adapting it as your own) is that even after a person has stopeed being in my life they've still left pieces of themself within me. I still smile and wave like my childhood best friend did. I still pull my shirts up to cover my face when i'm embarrassed because my favorite college roommate did that. I've learned how to be a human being through all those around me, and those after me will likely learn the same way too." -mr spider

I have been reading the book, "The Plant-Based Athlete" and it mentions Rich Roll. I'm 41 years old and have questioned if it's too late for me to get back into athletic condition at my age. Reading about Rich gave me hope that it is absolutely not too late!! Love hearing his story, and it inspires me to be consistent in all aspects of my life. It only took me this long to shift from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset, but I'd rather do that in my forties than on my deathbed!
