Tip for the 5 minute journal. Instead of answering the question "what would make today great?" change it to "what can I do to make today great?" The former question implies that you are expecting something to happen, and passively waiting for something great to happen during your day. Take action with the latter question.

@@waltz9230 I just bought a blank journal and I the prompts in each day (I didn't want to commit the $$ for the journal without knowing if I would benefit from the practice or even commit to it. If I like it when I finish, I'd like to buy the journal to support the creator). The inspirational quotes are great, and you can find some to add in if you want, but they're not really necessary. Just write in your prompts, fill in your answers, and go.

@@aboucher0319 @Duke Nukem - For many years I bought inexpensive journals - sometimes lined, sometimes blank (for doodling/drawing as well as writing) - and covered them in beautiful paper with Date and Theme on the cover. I had boxes of them when I moved countries - many filled with Morning Pages; quotes from books I was reading and self-exploration and therapy. Then I did something DRAMATIC - I had a JOURNAL BURNING PURGE which I wrote about on my blog - soon to be an article on Medium. The point is - blank cheaper journals are just as brilliant. Though true confession - in recent years I've fallen in love with good quality Bullet Journals.

Types of note-taking: 1. Brainstorm / Insight Notebook - for interesting goals and ideas 2. Morning Pages - aka brain vomit; for reducing anxiety and worries 3. 5-minute Journal - for focus, appreciation, and keeping anything simple Key to note-taking: multiple passes and constantly asking what did I think was important or cool thru different times, so you’re not just spewing onto the page and then forgetting it Example: 1st pass: when you first took notes 2nd pass: maybe a week or a month after the note was taken; underscore ideas you find interesting at this time 3rd pass: maybe a quarter after; encircle ideas you find interesting at this time Action item for me: add this on my brainstorm / insight notebook 👍

My reasoning for journaling was listening to Kobe Bryant talk about how he would rewatch his games was literally right after his game. I started a new career, and in learning my new craft I thought, “ok I can’t record myself or vlog at work, but I can write everything down that happens at work”
Take-Aways: 1) Catch-all note taking, writing thoughts downs with a cataloguing/indexing system at the front of the journal; brain-storming, insight, review, answers, problem solving 2) Morning Pages: a way of getting whatever anxious thought is in your head out of it and onto paper. Reducing anxiety and neuroses. 3) The Five-Minute Journal: three AM prompts for the morning and two PM prompts for the evening for reflection. Focus and appreciation. Thanks, Tim. Danny Tétreault.
If you enjoy journalling and learning new languages, I encourage to take your notes in the language you want to learn. It has helped me a lot with studying french. Thanks Tim for the great content you provide to us !

Sounds great. Real life? Not sooo much. People are far too complex. They compartmentalize, apply selective memory, discredit you; anything to allow them to ignore your example and not have to consider your opinion. That's been my experience. The world is changed by good and evil alike. By opinions, lies, propaganda, i.e. information wars. The world 'progresses' by Truth alone. If one's example does not align with their opinion then they are a hypocrite. Resolving hypocrisy in one's life will dissolve the ego.

Tim, I was reading your 4 hour work week when I finally had it. I was being abused in a job and I was so unhappy. I quit my job, sold my house, and put all my energy into building myself up. It's been just over a year and I've designed my own journal. I'm working in getting it out to people as a free download right now, but I just started my own youtube channel. It's all inspired by you. I figure whatever i do, my youtube and putting myself out there to people is a great first step. I finally have the confidence. I'm an avid journaler too, I've just translated ot into video. Thank you for the inspiration!!

OMG morning pages... literally saved my life! I was so dumb I thought the ‘Artist way’ (dragon on the front) was going to help me draw.... next day opening the book ... I was like, WHAT!!! Totally got me out of my head... so grateful 🙏!
I started doing 5-minute journal at the beginning of the year. Became quite obsessed with journaling, I'd say its one of the best habits a man can have. Life changing, always being aware of your position in life, where you've been, where you're going. And thanks for the Tools of titans it was a blast reading it. :)

Yes, this 5 min journal is one of the tools that we can use daily to balance negativity and chaos. This helps us to look for the things we are thankful for even in the worst of times. And it's free and quick to do.

I've kept journals / to do list / sketch book / doodles / whatever since I was a kid. I have a library of them that I probably would never show to anybody but cherish and will never get rid of. It's interesting to be able to go back and see what my mind was doing at certain times of life, and how much the initial impressions of events have changed in my memory (shockingly sometimes). So happy to see someone else doing the exact same thing. You're brave to share yours, so thank you! Keep up the inspiring work :D

Hey Tim, great video! Just something i've noticed: You seem a lot more relaxed, at ease and generally happier these days. I've also noticed that you're showing a lot more vulnerability in your videos and podcasts which I love, maybe this is one of the factors in your change of energy. Love your videos and this one in particular will help a lot because my headspace often feels overwhelmed with thoughts, ideas and general distractions. Thanks

Everyone is taking good notes here - so Tim you're onto something. QUICK TIP/CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: Try writing your morning pages in lyrical prose or rhyme, you'd be surprised at how it unlocks your your ability to navigate your subconscious undercurrents in a higher dimensional flow of language. Essentially, push the limits of morning pages to it's ultimate goal of helping you break through your linguistic and spiritual boundaries, culminating in the totality of your personality surfaced and integrated into your awareness - individuation as Jung would say. 💜

I have a bullet journal. Has an index, future log, grid format and 3 page markers. I use it for a habit tracker and to reference throughout the week, month and year. Highly effective for me.
This crisis is a gift. People are getting humbled.The first step to peace inner and outer.
Morning pages are the best , I did for 3 years it even help me with my depression and my anxiety that thanks god I don’t have it anymore. Everybody should read the artist way

Wow. The index idea is awesome. I’ll definitely use it. I already create my own index on books, adding pages or stories I’d like to come back that are not specified on the main index. using it for personal notebooks will be super useful Thx Tim, reading “the 4-hour workweek” changed my life.

I feel like Tim is the friend we all needed, or I personally needed, during our coming of age years.... and through young adulthood. But he was always to busy to have time to visit, hangout or chill with us. I never had friends that had their act or life together on a sliver of Tim's level.

Don't forget, my friend. We see only a sliver of Tim's life. Not saying he is trying to be deceptive. However, it's easy to see Tim's highlight reel and feel like he has all of his life together. You might be closer to it than you realise!

Hypergraphia is great. Our brain needs expression to function to its optimal and writing is a great way of expressing.

This makes me feel much less worried about my journaling. In 18 years of having multiple journals etc, often times I felt it was so detailed and structured, as it was a kind of compulsive disorder. This looks similar to the practices I developed for myself. Thanks

Last year, I stopped using ALL media that involves photo uploading and "documenting" my day.... I took that 'extra' time and returned to practicing the piano daily. I also read Moby Dick, started gardening, recorded an original blues piece, and improved my skills at trimming my horse's hooves. .....boy oh boy how I don't miss Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

Tim, this is the old school Tim Ferris we all love. Please do more videos on topics like this.
Great examples, helpful explanations, especially the comment about not using each one every day (like it's an obligation). I found that to be freeing in my own experience, to skip a day (or days) if life gets demanding, but eventually coming back to it always seems to be more rewarding and fulfilling than gutting it out and forcing myself to check the box for consistency. Some tools are meant to be accessed when needed, and that's when they have the biggest impact.
Over night successes are rarely over night successes! I Love it!!

I've hear it as: "Slow is smooth and smooth is faster than fast". In terms of going fast, you'll make mistakes that need to be corrected or will otherwise further lead you off course.

Wow! Thank you for the tips!! I have been using all three methods on and off for the past three years: pocket notebooks (classic Moleskine, small wired pads, thin paper back with funny quotes etc), a five-minute journal (great Christmas presents) and morning pages. I found Tim's video very relatable to me. Several of Tim's methods will make my journaling more effective: 1) periodic review and 2) write down the small things I am grateful for. For five-minute journaling, I noticed the repetitive themes that I am grateful for: a loving family, a steady job, and a secured home. Periodically, I feel my life is very boring and uninspiring because there is nothing else to write about. As Tim shared in the video, these big themes are very vague. I will definitely start to focus on something small. For morning pages, because it is for morning mental cleansing, I use cheaper and thin notebooks - easier to take it with me wherever I go; and I feel more at ease and more compelled to write when I don't have to think that I spent $20 on a good notebook and I use it to record my emotion garbage. As someone who writes to decompress, seeing the notebook itself, and knowing my notebooks are filled with my stories help me to calm down. At least one of the notes is by my bed every night.
