The Best Adventure Photography Backpack? - f-stop Gear Tilopa Review

Фильм және анимация

This is a two month review of the f-stop Gear Tilopa adventure / hiking style camera backpack. This photography pack is designed to handle a lot of gear, abuse, and bad weather. Through the ICU system, it can be configured to carry a full pro equipment camera gear kit, or a two light setup of Profoto B1s. Leave questions in the comments and I'll address them.

    Thank you so much for this review. I own an Osprey Atmos 50AG and use it for hiking and carrying my photo gear. It's just like you said, the top loading only access gets really cumbersome and the Tilopa seems to be the way to go. Great review, helped to solidify my decision to finally get the Tilopa.

    I have a Loka with the medium ICU, mainly for the additional storage room above the ICU for necessities. With my DSLR and lenses, it was just about right. Now that I'm primarily using Sony mirrorless bodies (one standard, one IR converted) the medium ICU has that much more room. Looking at the Tilopa for longer excursions. Nice review.

    Thanks for the review. I see in other comments that it works as a carry-on. Can you carry-on with the tripod attached like that? I haven't seen anyone talk about traveling with a tripod, and I really wonder about that. I think this bag is on my short list.

    Hey, thanks for the review, just what I was looking for! :) Have you tried using it as carry on, and did you consider the Ajna? Not sure if the Ajna is big enough for me, but not convinced airlines would take this in the cabin... However also worried I just want the bigger bag because.... big bag! and wouldn't actually use it!

    Orange (called "Nasturium" or alike :-D) is also a nice color ! I´ve bought the little bit bigger modell "Satori EXP" with 60 liter compartment and i´m also quite satisfied with it. My only complaint is that it´s to expensive. They even didn´t added a rain cover ! You have to buy it separatly :-( That´s a feature LowePro always includes in it´s backpacks. Andy they now have a good alternative: The "Whistler"-Series with two different sizes. I´m using the XL ICU too but due to the fact that my Satori is a little bit larger i can pack on top a bit more... Unfortunatly my Satori has been replaced by the "Sukha" with 70 liter.

    Loved the time lapse of the full capacity load out - no other reviewers have done one like that !! Also Good point that you can lay the pack down -even in mud thanks to the rear entry design - a Canadian photographer even showed a style where he takes the pack off while leaving the waist belt clipped -rotating the pack around front so its hanging off your stomach and thus off the ground

    Idrissa Morehouse Thanks! I’ve attempted the waist belt flip around truck but I find it really doesn’t work if you have any substantial amount of gear in the pack.

    Hi, great review, thx. Just wondering how it looks like, when use it with a medium icu? When I open the back opening - I not only will have access to the icu, but also to the other compartment with my additional stuff. True? Can you share a photo of such a set up?

  • @CalebKerr

    @CalebKerr

    6 жыл бұрын

    Michael Rafferseder I don't have a medium ICU to demonstrate that, but they should be true. The large size fits right to the top of the back opening, so medium would leave a bit of a gap.

    It works perfectly well in the overhead bin, I've put it under the seat without issue, but it's definitely much larger than the airlines rules allow, so it's a risk.

    @@CalebKerr I would like a solution to travel with only carry on luggage to bring 2 cameras and 4 lenses like 80-200 24-70 16-35 and 35 would you recommend this bag? @@hicetnunc_ For the last year, I've been using Atlas Packs instead of this one, I find them to be a bit more suitable for my needs. To your question about carry-on, the Atlas Adventure pack is large enough to carry the lenses you're describing, and fit in an overhead compartment on an airplane. I've flown with a tripod strapped to the side of it, but it's entirely up to the airline if they want to give me a hard time for it. Usually I'll walk on with the tripod attached to the side of the pack, then detach it and put it in the overhead compartment separately. This Fstop pack works similarly and would work the same way.

    Hi Caleb, got 2 questions. How do you do at airports when passing the security, do you need to empty the bag and refill it? Is there enough space in the side pockets to put in a water bottle?

  • @CalebKerr

    @CalebKerr

    5 жыл бұрын

    The bag is fine in airports, it just must go in the overhead compartment, not under the seat. It's really no different in terms of going through security. Usually camera gear goes through no problem and doesn't require them to do additional searches, but that's less about the bag and more about what you're carrying. The side zip pocket is big enough for a normal water bottle.

  • @sonylox9

    I do a bit of travel in the US and I've had zero issues bringing the Tilopa as a carry on. This bag fits perfectly fine in the overhead bins too. I can't say for smaller planes though (like the ones they use for air taxis in Hawaii). My usual method is to take the ICU (completely zipped up) and place that under the seat. The bag itself goes on top in the overhead bin. Hope this helps!

    Having used one for over a year in the mountains I have to disagree. This pack is great for a days photography on easy going terain. Once you start to use it for anything technical it's faults begin to show. The back material causes overheating on the back, poor ventilation and not that sturdy with protruding parts causing uneven surface to back causing hotspots for chaffing. Everything else is good. But for serious hard work on the hills. Nope. F-stop is trendy right now, very good marketing but I still prefer dedicated mountain pack with an icu.

  • @CalebKerr

    @CalebKerr

    Hey Simon, thanks for chiming in. I do agree that the "dedicated" hiking pack brands like Osprey have really figured out very good back panels and comfortable hip belts (the new super meshy Osprey belts are like having clouds on your hips). But they really haven't figured out good gear access. But for me, the lack of functionality of the hiking packs (aka top loading only) is an absolute deal-breaker for a camera pack. It's one thing if you're trekking to a location and setting up shop, but that's virtually never the case for me. Everything is a trade off and there is no absolutely flawless pack solution currently. For my uses, and in my opinion, the pros and cons weighed together, the f-stop system wins out. That being said, there is always room for improvement. The simple fact of the back loading inherently means that they can't use the really nice mesh systems that Osprey does, which puts an air gap between the pack and my back.

    Hi, Im pretty happy you mentioned the "serious hard work on the hills".. I find Gregory Targhee (32/45) or any other ski pack fits the needs however the poor ventilation would be issue aswell. At least I pretty much trust Gregory / Osprey / Deuter the main focus on back system and hip belts when photo gear brands like F-Stop LowePro or Shimoda just trying to focus on the number of pockets :) With the better harness system, that would be my choice number one. Caleb - nice review, thx!

    I use a osprey Xenith for the longer treks with a small ICU. The carrying system is soo good on that pack. My friend uses the "super meshy" osprey but he is concerned how long it is going to last and after a 2 years of usage total 4 weeks active it has started creaking while walking. But for the dayhikes and overnight the tilopa with a large or medium ICU is good.
