One of the main reasons that people become instructional designers is because of the high earning potential and the great work-life balance.
In this video, we explore the main ways that I’ve been seeing people make a living in this space.
Of these top three possibilities, there’s at least one that is not talked about very much, and there’s a massive opportunity there that you’ll want to consider, for sure!
This field has changed my life financially in ways I would have never imagined when I first began exploring instructional design, and I’ve seen it do the same for so many other people who have transitioned into ID.
Have you explored all of these options in your journey into instructional design? Let me know what you think in the comments!

Love being an ID. My company is breaking into using Augmented Reality as a tool for automotive technical training, which is my specialty. Microsoft invited us out to their CES booth to run demos using their HoloLens AR headset. Definitely a cutting-edge, multifaceted industry. I even have time left over to run a KZread channel! Love the content man, keep it up.

Your videos are so valuable to me as I work on this transition. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I feel like there are not enough hours in the day to devour all the information I feel like I need to have as I go through this transition. Your videos are definitely one of the most valuable assets I have found during this journey. Thank you!
Money transparency is the only way for people to move forward as a society. Wage gaps due to gender and racial unfairness thrive in a society of secrecy and everyone wanting to make sure they make more then the next. So it’s appreciated

So many reasons for wage inequity but these two are massive! I used to work in corporate Human Resources and the lack of transparency in pay structure absolutely galled me.
Keep it coming Devlin! Looking forward to the playlist you’ll be releasing 😉

Thank you so much for your transparency! You worked so hard for your success and your earned it! I am interviewing companies for corporate ID roles but I do want to do course building on the side since it’s scalable!

Timely as always Devlin :) I've been thinking more and more about this lately...how can I utilize all the knowledge I've gained (from my considerable years in Human Resources, including training managers on HR topics and leadership development,) and apply that to *earning money* by creating and marketing *my own* content? Definitely looking forward to more on this topic!

Congrats on reaching 7 figures in your business! That's amazing. Do you think course selling is just a fad or here to stay for a while? I've seen a ton of influencers selling courses (I've bought a few, too, but I never end up finishing!)
@DevlinPeckYT

Thanks Charmaine! I definitely think that it’s here to stay. The way I see it, a lot of consumers are learning new skills and upskilling for new careers by turning to KZread, Google, and paid courses / programs from the creators they like…and they’re doing this instead of going to university programs. So we’re in a time where courses like this are helping people achieve their goals more quickly and at a lower price point than university programs, and I think it will continue shifting in that direction in the years to come. Especially as there’s more and more info out there, some people are happy to pay to have it all organized and sequenced for them in one place (so they don’t have to figure it all out on their own). Good question and let me know if you have any others!
Because of ageism in the instructional design marketplace, corporate and freelance employment is not an option. Course selling seems to be a more viable option, and I would like to see more content related to course selling.

Tim, could you please expand on the ageism aspect? I am north of 50 and just passing the halfway point in a masters in ID. Curious about what your experience has been. Thanks
@timseguin6292
Жыл бұрын
@@mtomasic380 In my experience, ageism is alive, well, and consistent with studies showing age-related preference or bias in tech workplaces. I met AARP's age requirements 10 years ago. I've been designing instructional content since 2013, have two graduate certificates in ID, certificates in Articulate Storyline and Adobe Captivate, learned and certified in 5 different LMS. I also have a Ph.D. in a non-ID discipline. I've revised my resume following Devlin Peck's video guidance. I apply for two or more closely fitting ID positions (temp and full-time) every week for the last two years. I'm getting 10+ hits per week on Linkedin from these employers but have been ghosted every time. No further contact, interviews, etc. Even instructors in my ID certificate classes insist that "old people" don't have computer skills. So far, those that buy courses don't care how old I am, only that my course solves a problem. FWIW, I've found that only higher education cares (but not that much) about an ID master's degree. I've seen R1 research universities hire persons with sociology degrees and no skills or experience as instructional designers.
I am really interested in the Freelance content, I started to explore that option and I had a couple of clients and I would like to know how can I reach more.
