This is so helpful, thank you! My previous job was "instructional designer" by title only but all we really did was research and writing. It was only when I started job searching again that I realized there was so much more to instructional design, so I've been feeling that my experience in that job is ultimately useless. My job before that was teaching. This video will really help me rephrase my experiences to hopefully get me past the resume screening stage.

Remember to update your online presence, including your social media profiles. Employers often search for candidates online, so make sure your digital footprint aligns with your career transition goals. Clean up and curate your online presence to project a professional image.

Do you think changing the titles of previous jobs on places like LinkedIn to align with what you're calling them on your resume is better or leaving them as they were?

Great timing, I'm translating my resume and am about to apply for the perfect transition job (at a school district) that popped up before getting to start learning the ID tools, so no portfolio yet. I'm still working on the theories. I'm going for it anyway and will continue on my path while I wait to hear back. Do you have any content on cover letters/letters of interest? Thank you for your content! You are the first person who made me feel like I can make this transition without an ID degree!

Thanks for this video and template, Devlin! I wonder what you think of including a summary/profile/highlights of qualifications (whatever you might call it) section at the top of your resume? A resume coach that I previously had a session with recommended using that as a way to highlight your top skills/experiences that match with the most emphasized parts of the job description, basically to capitalize on those 6 seconds of attention that you get. Thoughts?

You're welcome, Megan! I don't generally recommend it and don't get the impression that hiring managers / recruiters are spending much time in those sections. If you pull off the professional experience section well, then you don't need the summary at the top. Tailoring your experience to the job description is a great idea though!

Hi Devlin...do certifications matter at all in your experience? For instance, I seem some ID resumes where the person has a Certificate in Human Performance Technology or Certificate in Developer of Training. Do these matter much in your view? Thanks!

Hey Pete! They’re definitely not necessary and likely won’t make much of an impact on your job search. If you have one though, couldn’t hurt to include it. I have a vid on the channel about whether you need one (but the summarized version is that your portfolio will take you way further)
