Introduction to Instructional Design: Models, Theory, & Principles

If you’re intimidated by all the theories, models, and principles involved in instructional design and don’t know where to start, then this video is for you! 👉Download the Become an ID Checklist: www.devlinpeck...
We know that instructional design is more than eLearning development, but what else does it entail?
We can learn the models and theories like ADDIE, SAM, and Gagne's Events, but there's more to it than that...right?
Right! While there’s definitely a lot involved in regards to the learning science, multiple models of design, the types of evaluation you might use, and various concepts and principles, it doesn’t have to be complicated.
If you’re looking for a clear outline or overview of what instructional design entails and how you can sift through all the theories that have built this field into what it is, be sure to watch the video!

I was a classroom teacher for grades 6-12 for 10 years and have been doing private tutoring for the last 4 years. I really want to take my current skills and turn them into something that is still meaningful but gives me a better work-life balance with financial goals in mind. This video showed me that I am in my wheelhouse to learn and become an ID. thank you Devlin! I want to do your bootcamp but I just can't swing the financials right now, so it is really great that you have so many videos available at no cost.

Thank you so much, Devlin. Your videos are truly excellent. I constantly use them to learn new concepts and to remind myself of things I may lose focus on over time. I'm also grateful to your team members and collaborators for their contributions. I have 9 years of experience teaching engineering graduates and over 5 years of experience in instructional design, and I am currently based in the UK.

As someone who's been a trainer for the past three years, I'm transitioning into instructional design myself, and your videos have been an absolute godsend. Your diverse range of examples really drives home the lessons and inspires me to think creatively about my own training methods. Thank you for your videos; I have learned so much from them. One quick clarification, though. When talking about rewards and punishments, in terms of behaviorism, you are actually talking about operant conditioning (Skinner and Thorndike are the major contributor's to this theory).

The masterclass is truly a master class. What I'd like though is if you could go through the entire process of ID using 1specific example in a corporate setting so from say analysis to evaluation

Do you ever use UBD for creating curricula? (UBD is Understanding by Design) it's about creating units with a backward design? It has 3 phases. First phase, we figure out the results we want to achieve for the unit; the 2nd phase is creating the assessments for it and 3rd phase is the activities/games/worksheets that will support getting to the end result. It's not a program; it's more of a framework on how to create curriculum units. Do you have any opinions on how it relates to today's field as ID?

Great intro and synthesis of some very complicated concepts. Question: So much of Design is framed in terms of defining a problem or behavior. What if there IS no problem or behavior to change? Compliance, New Hire orientation, regulatory and other types of training are just information dumps and memorization for learners. There’s a need, perhaps, but nothing that’s really corrective.
