Today, I want to cover some interesting information on iodine that goes way beyond what it does for the thyroid.
Most of your iodine is stored in your thyroid. However, iodine is important for many other organs.
The RDAs for iodine in the US are 150 mcg. But, in Japan, on average, people consume 1000 to 3000 mcg of iodine daily. They also have fewer problems associated with iodine deficiency than we do in the US.
That being said, excess iodine can create just as many problems as a deficiency in iodine.
I think it’s most beneficial to get the iodine you need from food. Shellfish and sea kelp are rich in iodine. But there is also iodine in eggs, dairy, iodized salt, and sea salt.
Unless you consume foods rich in iodine, either from the sea or from vegetables grown on the coastline, chances are you’re not getting enough iodine in your diet.
Iodine may help with various conditions, including:
• Estrogen dominance
• Heavy periods
• Fibrocystic breasts
• Ovarian cysts
• Endometriosis
• Fibroids
• Prostate enlargement
• PCOS
• Cystic acne
• TB
• Croup
• Asthma
• Toenail fungus
• Warts and skin tags
• Thyroid conditions
• Weight gain
• Brain fog
• Feeling cold (excessively)
• Dry skin and hair
• Constipation
• Depression
Top causes of iodine deficiency:
• Consuming excessive amounts of raw cruciferous vegetables
• Consuming millet, soy, or sweet potatoes
• The vegan diet
• Pregnancy and lactation
• Low-salt diets
• Fluoride
• Bromide
• Perchlorate in water
• Nitrates

@@sylviaking6796 Not advice, since it can probably harm them, but yes. Tldr: "radioactive Iodine treatment" is a real thing that vets do for cats with hyperthyroidism, But they do a mega dose that makes your cat radioactive, so it has to stay with them for a couple days. Long anecdote: I have an 18y+ cat who was losing weight rapidly, bones starting to show, drinking tons of water, breath super stinky. I read it is probably hyperthyroidism, very common in old cats. Lack of apatite and then they whither away. So I started to give her iodine, slowly increasing the drops in her waterbowl. it's been 6 months. She hasn't really gained weight on the scale but I can't see her bones anymore. More energy, apatite is back, she eats. Just looks way healthier in general. Unfortunately didn't fix the breath, probably has a tooth problem. No idea how much is too much though, it's possible I'm not doing enough yet. Ive kind of stayed at 8 drops of 5% lugols per gallon of water.

I started supplementing iodine in 2015. For years I was only taking 5mg (5000mcg) a day. After finding out that plenty of doctors in the 19th and 20th century were giving patients 400mg/day. In fact one doctor was giving his patients 1200 mg per day ... I bumped that up to 60mg a day around the spring of 2023, and have been doing so for several months now. I also supplement with desiccated grass fed beef liver, and zinc. No detrimental effects, but I do have more energy. Also need to mention that a few weeks or so after going up to 60mg to 80mg a day my heart arrhythmia went away. I had had that for at least a decade. I use the Lugol's formula at 2% concentration putting 15 drops in a big glass of lemon water twice a day. More or less, I don't count the drops anymore. The main thing to watch out for is something people are calling an allergy... which I suspect is an effect of the iodine displacing or liberating some massive toxic build up they have. At any rate some people have a very serious reaction to iodine supplements or even topical iodine. Then again I have been doing a liver detox regimen for several years. Basically people are saying they are allergic to a substance that is necessary for life LOL Anyways, FWIW, I am not a Dr.

It was also added to salt, until the 1960/70s when the panic on BP started. Taken out of salt then. No wonder most people are deficient. I just added drops of iodine to my drinks recently, and feel so much better for it. I was obviously deficient in it. Thank you Dr Berg for highlighting this.

Ive been consuming it in drop form for over a decade. I started with about 1mg but nowadays I use about 50+mg. When you paint it on your skin, you lose a lot through evaporation. And when you bear in mind there are a lot of toxic halogens that deplete / compete with iodine you will see we likely need more. Selenium allows it to work without damaging our thyroid.

I usually take a kelp tablet daily, and before swimming (once a week) I take about a half cup of filtered water with six drops of 2% Lugol's Iodine/Iodide solution. The thinking being that it's better to allow the body to uptake the good stuff before unavoidably ingesting some of the bad stuff (chlorine) while swimming, since chlorine/flouride/bromine compete for the Iodine receptors in the body. I also take Selenium to help the body to absorb the Iodine.
