Iodine deficiency happens when your body lacks necessary iodine, which is a very important trace mineral. Iodine supports the thyroid gland in your neck, since your thyroid uses iodine to make thyroid hormones to control the rate of heartbeats, digestion and other many other important functions.
Low iodine symptoms
The United States, Canada, and dozens of other countries have salt-iodization programs. Particularly in the US, salt manufacturers have been adding iodine to table salt since the 1920s.
Iodine deficiency test
Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine or (T3). Thyroid hormones regulate so many important systems in the body. If youre not getting enough iodine, the first symptom pops up, which is they first symptom on our list, which is swelling of the neck, or whats called a goiter.
Iodine deficiency goiter
The thyroid gland is that small, butterfly-shaped gland in the front of your neck. It makes T4 and T3, which are your thyroid hormones when it receives a signal from the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) coming from the pituitary gland. And when TSH is up, the thyroid uses iodine to make thyroid hormones as normal, but when iodine is low, thyroid hormones cant be made, so the thyroid works harder to try and make them, which causes the cells in that area to grow larger, leading to a goiter.
Iodine deficiency risk factors
People who dont use iodized salt, pregnant women, vegans, even people who live in areas where their soil has no iodine, like in the alps or any mountainous areas and river valleys that are prone to flooding, the soil really has no iodine. So the fruits and vegetables end up being really poor sources of iodine, especially for vegans that heavily rely on fruits and vegetables.
Iodine deficiency weight gain
The second symptom is unexpected weight gain. Thyroid hormones help control the speed of your metabolism, if you have iodine deficiency, your body burns fewer calories at rest, which means more calories from food you eat are stored as fat instead of used for energy, which leads to weight gain.
Iodine deficiency weakness
Some studies have found that nearly 80% of people with low thyroid hormone levels, due to iodine deficiency, feel tired, sluggish and weak.
Iodine deficiency hair loss
This is because your thyroid hormones help control the growth of your hair follicles. If youre currently experiencing hair loss, which could be from a multitude of other factors, see if getting enough of iodine may help correct your thyroid hormone levels and stop hair loss.
Iodine deficiency dry skin
Also keep in mind that a number of other factors could lead to dry and flaky skin, but the reason why I mentioned this is because thyroid hormones help the body regulate sweat. People with lower thyroid hormones, sweat less than people with normal thyroid hormone levels with normal iodine levels. Remember, sweating helps keep your skin moist and hydrated.
Iodine deficiency disorder
So whats the solution and how much iodine do we actually need. The recommended daily intake of iodine for adult women is 150-300 µg to maintain a normal thyroid function; for men, it is somewhat less at 150 µg.
How to treat low iodine
Mild cases of iodine deficiency for the most part can be treated with using iodized salt in daily food consumption or eating more saltwater fish for example. But if youre vegan or vegetarian, some of the best food sources of iodine actually come from seaweed, kelp and nori which is found in sushi, have good sources of iodine.
Overall though, it appears that the general U.S. population has adequate iodine intake but the risk is real for some, especially during pregnancy. And its only when a person’s iodine intake falls below approximately 10-20 mcg/day, that hypothyroidism occurs, which is important to get your iodine levels checked as well as a thyroid panel if you suspect you may be deficient.

Seaweed is Vegan and the best source of iodine. The vegan diet is also short on a few other nutrients, research it. Also consider selenium, it works synergistically with iodine in the thyroid and brain. 1 brazil nut a day is all you need. Also vegan. By any chance do you live in the midwest or norther area by the great lakes? They are the worst areas for low iodine in America.

Dr. Aspires, WOW!! I can't Thank You enough for your channel I am a new sub😊!! I have always done some type of research on any natural, or drugs my primary doctor wants to put me on. "Drugs scare the hell out of me"!! But you Dr. Aspires you are literally a blessing with your "ON POINT" information, and the way you deliver that info in such a caring and loving manner, you absolutely care about people, and that is a rare trait!! Now a days I go to the doctor and I call it conveyor belt health care, it's all about the money not caring or helping people, extremely sad. And doctors won't tell you the side effects of the poison they prescribe, not all medicines are bad. I have metabolic syndrome no doctor has ever tackled, not even endocrinologist. So Thank You SO much for your channel, it's a breath of fresh air!!❤

I know to take iodine and selenium helps but my first time taking it. Is there a right ratio to start off? On no medication. I have selenium yeast 200mcg and kelp 150 mcg of natural iodine from 30mg organic kelp. I know with kelp you have to be careful. Will it be safe to take them both doses to start off with? Or taking the selenium and cutting half of the kelp tablet ? Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated.

Sh has been complaining about chronic fatigue and excessive hair loss more than the usual when she brushes her hair every morning. It's going to depend on the person. Some may do fine with less, some need more. The amount he lists is the average. I happen to do just fine with the amount he lists for women, I just have to be careful that it comes from mineral sources instead of the ocean. I have a lot of ocean-related allergies so I have to be careful. Contamination has bitten me in the butt before. I need significantly more than the RDA of vitamin C, potassium, & magnesium, and significantly less of iron. In fact, I have to be careful not to eat too much red meat because I have borderline high iron levels most of the time, which is really odd because women usually have trouble getting enough.

Always use table idione salt on foods after it's cooked , low sodium idione , I would stay away from vitamins that have higher amounts of idione in mg , it's interesting fact too much of vitamins with over higher dose can make you really sick there is a Daily value intake of idione mg it's best of table salt it does help alot better than those vitamins with crazy amounts in it that is no good I hope this helps someone

All mammals need iodine. Its concentrated in mamary glands. Deer, and every other land mammal, does just fine. And why isn't sea salt a good source if sea veg is? And Im sick of best this best that, and nothing else has value. Its just not true.

The weight gain scenario is bs; give yourself no food for 3 weeks and youll look like youre out of a concentration camp. You only get fat from a calorie surplus, and that's it.

150mcg is not even remotely close to the iodine you need. should be a minimum of 12 GRAMs or two drops of Lugols 5% and could need as much as 50 Grams (not mcg but MG) The RDA is literally the amount you need to not die not the amount you actually need to live Its the same with vit C the RDA is just enough so that you don't get rickets not what your body actually needs. In fact the RDA should be completely ignored

This sounds more like a low thyroid video than a low iodine video. With Hashimoto’s, an auto immune low thyroid, they say not to take iodine because it helps target the thyroid cells better for the immune system. Put a target on the back so to speak. iodine helps so many other tissues in the body so he should have focused on that. Otherwise, this is really just a thyroid video, and it’s not even correct for Hashimoto’s.

Nope. In fact, iodine lowers your chances of getting gout. Specifically, iodine deficiency can cause thyroid and heart issues that are risk factors for gout.

The amount of false information around iodine on the internet is profound. Pink Himalayan salt has been assayed to show 3x the amount of iodine as iodized salt. 7 confirmed cases of iodine deficiency in the U.S. in the last 42 years! Iodine excess is the real problem for people prone to thyroid disease.
