5:10 They always had a belief that something good would happen for them as a band. When things seemed bleak, a sudden change would come and they would thrive again. That's what Paul means in his forward about "I dunno, something will happen.....and it did". "It did", of course, means their eternal success.

There are many factors to consider when it comes to listening to the album on vinyl. First would be the dynamics: You mentioned the CD's are louder, therefore there's some heavy compression applied to the master. Compression can bring everything to the front as there are less peaks and valleys to the sound form. You can't have too much compression on vinyl or your needle starts skipping, and it would require deeper grooves. This is why vinyl always has a soft sort of mid-rangy sound to it. All you have to do is use the volume knob slightly higher than you would on your CD. Second, the record player itself: The sound of the vinyl will depend on whether you have, not only a great record player, but also an audiophile quality cartridge and stylus. Cartridges and stylus vary, some are too hot, some mellow, some are brighter, etc. On top of that, you also need to consider the phono preamp you're using and the speakers it will come out on. You're basically dealing with physical/analog components unlike the CD where it's all just read in ones and zeroes--therefore any system will arguably give the same results. I would be cautious about how we compare the two mediums without talking about these factors. Nevertheless, you did a great job at sharing your listening experience as well as your well thought out review of the packaging. I do have a few gripes but all in all Giles definitely did an excellent job!

I was thinking this also as Brian was comparing. I have a very good high end system. Both CDP and turntable are great replay machines. However, the tt always wins out because to my ears it's more natural sounding. It doesn't force the music into my ears like digital tends to do. Also, turntables have a lot more components that can be changed by the listener. Cartridge, tonearm, platter mats, plinth, cables, phonostage will all affect the sound. Apart from the power cord, output leads and supports, there's not much that can be done to a cdp. I don't want to sound all audiophile git about it, but Brian, you may be just 'hearing' your system with regards to the 'clarity' issue you're experiencing with the vinyl.

Hi Brian. Very good review. I listened the new remixed White Album and I agree with you that Giles Martin did a great job, but for me, it wasn’t perfect. Some details in the songs are a vital part of them (like Ringo shouting “I GOT BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS!) I cannot believe that now that phrase it’s so quiet, and in the background. I thought that Ringo’s scream was gonna break the speakers, but … I don’t know, it’s weird that this part its so low volume. Other thing that bothers me, it’s the sound of tambourine so low on “Happiness is a Warm Gun”. When John sings “Mother Superior jump the guuun” in the mono version, and stereo too, the tambourine it’s wild, and I like that a lot, but in this remix, again Giles Martin makes them almost inaudible. What a shame. He certainly did PERFECT remixes, like Savoy Truffle and Piggies and I’m So Tired (with Paul’s voice more prominent, like the original mono mix). Anyway, I’m sure that you cannot make everybody happy with these releases. Cheers Brian, and I hope that you can upload a second part of your review, because there’s so many things to comment on this release.

I do agree that "I"ve got blisters on my fingers" is too quiet. In the book that comes with the deluxe set it says that Ringo's comment about his blisters was captured on the drum microphones. This doesn't excuse it, but perhaps that's why he kept it at the same volume as the rest of the drums in the mix. I'll have to listen to "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" again and keep an ear out for the tambourine. Didn't strike me as low, but I wasn't listening for it specifically. I've listened to the remixed album about 4 times now and already I want to make another video discussing what's new in the mixes and what's now either gone, or very quiet. Thanks for your comment!

very well said. overall i love the clarity and detail. george's skilled, tasteful, and powerful guitar playing, and the details of while my guitar gently weeps, brought tears to my eyes. but, i absolutely love george martin, but his son's remixes reveal his limitations: these reissues/remixes absolutely crush it. they reveal a tight, powerful, r&b band at their core, something george's pop production only hinted at.

Brandon Nelson thanks for the comment. In George Martins defense he didn’t have the technology that his son does. Giles is able to take each and every instrument and EQ/raise or lower the volume/ and pan where ever he pleases. His Dad was stuck with only 8 tracks a lot of them with multiple instruments per track.

a word about the words "record" and "album" ... a _record_ is just that, a RECORD of something that happened... it doesn't matter what the format is... whether it's analog tape, digital tape, phonograph, CD, MP3, whatever; they are ALL records... so you're not wrong to call a CD a _record..._ similarly, an _album_ is a COLLECTION of songs... the word goes back before the LP phonograph, when 78RPM phonographs only held 1 song per side... an ALBUM was a group of discs presented in a "book" that looked very much like a photo album... that name stuck when 33 1/3RPM phonographs allowed many songs on a single disc... so, a CD can be an album, as can a collection of computer files... thanks for the vid!

The second paragraph of Paul's essay is more metaphor. He tells the story of the band being young and starting out and their van is broken down on the side of the road, then "Something will happen." Without connecting the dots for us, Paul is comparing that incident and their attitude about it to where the band was in 1968. Their manager had died, they'd had a somewhat confusing experience in India, the studio was tense with Yoko there and for other reasons, their own record label was just starting and business was stressful...the traditional "Beatles van" was on the side of the road, and yet, something happened. They made a great record out of the chaos that was happening. I like that this little write-up is not as literal as his Sgt. Pepper intro. It suits the White Album that his intro for it is more disconnected and mysterious and makes you think!

My theory is there will be a remixed and reissued edition of Past Masters so that's why they didn't include the master single versions of "Hey Jude," "Revolution," "Lady Madonna" or "The Inner Light" on this White Album box set. Apple doesn't want to make Past Masters, a big seller for the label, obsolete by "giving away" the remixed singles on these album-centric box sets. So they split the difference and give us some outtakes, but are saving all of the masters for a deluxe Past Masters in the near future. A total $ decision on their part, but at least it makes sense. "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" are not on Past Masters, so they were fair game for including on the Sgt. Pepper box set.

I have the pepper 2cd and vinyl and 1 cd and vinyl and they all came with that write up. The 2cd came with a sweet little booklet that was like 40 pages n really thick glossy paper. I think they left stuff out like that cuz 1: pepper was a more fascinating and visual album and 2: they culd make more money cuz they know the ppl that bought the pepper 50th wuld buy this white album. I mean 30$ for the 3cd is kinda steep seeing as it has the little booklet n poster only. But I got it for free so no complaints. As the white album is my least listened album its a good time to compare it with the 09 remix.

Yea I don't quite understand why they wouldn't include some type of "50th Anniversary" insert with the 2LP and 3CD sets. It certainly wouldn't have cost all that much to include a single sheet of card stock. Especially since the 2LP set I bought was nearly $50. Either way I suppose it's about the quality of the music and one insert won't really make or break my decision to buy it or not. Anyway thanks for your comment!

I would assume that as the 2 Beatles and the wives of John and George had to approve all of this, that Ringo would have had the opportunity to write something but couldn't be bothered. Having been reminiscing about the Beatles for the last 40 + years he probably felt he didn't have anything new to contribute. I'll probably get this just because it's Beatles history, even though I don't think a fair amount of the material has stood the test of time. I'm in the camp believing it could have been a great single album if the boys threw out a few tunes. With great Beatle songs they just never get old for me, and I can't say that about songs like "Martha My Dear", "Good Night" or "Piggies" and a few others. Maybe these remixes will help with that a bit, we'll see.

I have been waiting for the Beatles stereo remixes for ages. And the Pepper, which was remixed a year ago, had appeared somewhat eatable. But it had encouraged Giles enormously, and he went on completely destroying the White Album. Sure the same unlucky metamorphoses are waiting for the Abbey Road and the rest of catalogue. So now I would prefer to go on with my the Beatles In Mono box set. As for stereo, do not forget that since 1999 we have got Yellow Submarine Songtrack. Nice little compilation of tastyful remixes. But stereo job of George Martin does not seem so awful. I would say now that it is just great, when we have got completely unhealthy tricks of Giles. Is Giles professional? Is Giles healthy man at all? Not sure. For me, the White Album turned out to be the end of career of Giles. Paint a mustache on the Mona Lisa and turn that frown upside down.

@Michael H. The monophonic catalog is the only original source of music that you are trying to discuss here. This catalog sounds great even now, because it was created by the band members themselves along with the great George Martin. Therefore, a monophonic catalog is not only my small world. Starting from the 60s, it was the mono catalog that conquered the whole big world. Everything else, including Giles remixes and other remixes, past and future, is nothing more than fantasies that become obsolete as new technical discoveries appear. I bet you never listened to mono carefully.

not sure i agree with that, but I respect your opinion. from what I've read it seemed like Linda pretty much stayed in the background taking the occasional photo.

Poor George Martin! 2018 White Album remix done by his son Giles is sooooooooo crap. Take the tapes away from Giles. This is not his cup of tea.

Fair enough. You are entitled to your opinion but I am curious as to what exactly you don't like about the new mix.

@@BrianBringelson It's easier to say what I liked in the new mix. Only two songs (Julia and Glass Onion), but the orchestral ending in Glass Onion is muted and this is nonsense. And the whole work is an unprecedented failure.

@Michael H. If I do not like something, I may not buy something. But who said I can’t discuss something? You? You are wrong. Returning to the topic. The problem is not that someone remade something. The problem is that it was the only chance for many years to get something. And it was not used as it should. The remix is made unprofessionally in many ways, and this is obvious.

The new remix of the original album benefits the album ??? You've got to be kidding. The new remixes are atrocious. Giles Martin has ruined a masterpiece. It's like painting sunglasses on the Mona Lisa. You don't screw with something that was perfect in the first place. The esher demos and the studio sessions are a great treat, but as for the new remix you can forget it !!!
