EXTRA NOTE: I forgot to mention that from the SESSIONS features I personally disliked the "First Version Take 2" bonus track for "Helter Skelter". It is a slow and plodding dirge that bores me to death. It had previously appeared on ANTHOLOGY 3 as a mercifully shorter edit, but this one here is something like 13 minutes long (!), and therefore even more intolerable. For those fans who are anxious to hear the so-called "27 minute take of Helter Skelter" - (from which this was taken) - many people have suggested: Just play this one twice.

Love the Blu-ray. My only gripe is that I wish they would have put the 1968 singles on it, too, like they did with Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields on the Sgt. Pepper box. That non- White Album material was represented in the sessions discs; why not include the finished versions in Blu-ray quality in context?

It's like you mentioned in your reviews of Egypt Station, bringing a discriminating take on these releases only lends greater credibility to the all-out rave reviews. I find that voice much more trustworthy than someone who praises every single thing, whether great, mediocre or downright poor. In the end, we all have our own take and that variety of perspectives should be celebrated more instead of the sometimes vicious hostility we find online all the time.

The bass on Helter Skelter was played by John Lennon with a pick. That plus almost a distorted (analog slightly in the red) sound, plus the other guitars make a almost crunchy sound.

Hello Joe, great review! I'm eagerly waiting to get my copy of the remixed White Album (arriving tomorrow). I always enjoy listening to Beatles editions and new mixes that come out and that's why I'm always interested in hearing comments and reviews like the ones you do. I want to ask you something not directly related to the White Album though. Up until today, I haven't heard much from anyone commenting or reviewing the sound mix from the "Beatles Anthology DVD set". I noticed there are different mixes in that product and by the way, really good ones to my taste! So, after I discovered those mixes I went into the task of recording every complete or partial song that appears on that DVD set using my computer and I made myself a personal CD album. If you want to take a listen (as I am sure you have that DVD set in your collection), you should focus on "Day tripper" and "For no one" as I think those are the most relevant mixes and I'm sure you'll notice how different they are from the original versions. Just let me clarify, I'm talking about the PCM stereo mixes on that DVD set. To this day I am wondering why we never saw the CD version of those mixes! Even though there are some songs in the video that are played partially, I'm sure that whoever worked on the mixes must have worked and rendered whole songs, not just bits (also let me clarify that these are different from what we got in the Beatles Anthology CDs). Anyway, I'd love to hear your comments about this, and also know if you ever took a closer listen to the material I'm talking about, or maybe I am the only one who spotted this (???). Thank you!

Giles was subtle in Revolution 9 in the stereo, supposedly he couldn't do much with it in stereo. To me it sounds almost the same as the original, now the 5.1 surround mix is a different story and should give people an appreciation of the track. If you have a surround system, he is doubling and tripling the sounds and having them cris cross the channels. Sometimes he will bring it all to the center channel and nothing else and then he will get crazy with it again. I even heard additional tape loops in the 5.1 mix.

Lol, 'just play the 13 minute long Helter Skelter twice' :D. That made me laugh, though personally i'd still really like to hear the 27 minute version, if only for historic interest. I liked the 13 minute version, but it's not something i'd listen to much. But speaking of HS, I couldn't agree more re the new mix. For me the song has basically lost all of the balls it used have. And hearing the albums new mix in its entirety, I can't help wonder why many key guitar parts are buried... the acoustic intro to Bungalow Bill, the "mother superior jumped the gun" guitar part on HIAWG, Eric Clapton's solo on WMGGW.. To be fair though I love how a lot of the vocals, drums and bass are a bit more prominent and the sound is generally clearer. That bass on Dear Prudence gives me goose-bumps. Birthday is punchier than ever. I don't think this would be my go-to version because those aforementioned neutered guitar parts. Though I say that reluctantly due to well, everything else seems great. Man the bass on Yer Blues sets my teeth on edge (in a good way). Love it.

Great vid as always! It's worth knowing that there were actually very few takes of "Not Guilty" - The engineers sometimes used to start a new round of takes with a nice round number if there was a chance of confusion further down the line, hence 100. "Not Guilty" was recorded like most of the songs during this period with a live basic track followed by overdubs and sub-mixes (bounces). Overdubs and sub-mixes also build up the take numbers... so there probably isn't much sonic difference here in terms of progression for us to hear. 'Lovely Rita' also exhibits a similar recording process. Re - "Helter Skelter" - The rhythm guitars were played and recorded live onto one of the four tracks and not bounced, therefore it would not be possible to separate them from their original balance.

Enjoyed your review. Up to and including Peppers I'm a mono Beatles fan. I thought all of the boxed set mixes preferrable on those particular albums. I actually remember listening to Paul on Luxemburg introducing the White Album, so as with all things Beatles, it's been with me forever. My concern with remasters of ANY artist is about the way record companies seem to pander more to current cell phone listening habits rather than the original works of art. Especially when it comes to simply pushing up the bass. For example, on the last Abbey Road CD I heard it sounded like McCartney may as well be in my room today rather than the studio back in '69. Which would have been nice, but... As you say, we'll always have the original versions to listen to alongside this release, which in general is very impressive. Certainly a must-have box set.

Hi Joe, I have been listening to the recordings via iTunes through Apple TV and my home surround sound system and I must say I’m pleasantly surprised, the recordings have been given a new fresh lease of life, there is now a definite stereo room ambience where before it sounded 1 dimensional, some instrument levels have been given a boost, altogether the sound is more beefier if you get my drift, I think the reason Ringo’s blistered fingers cursing sounds pushed back is because it has now been placed where he was playing his drums, I.e. off-centre in a different part of the studio, we are so used to hearing it sounding harsh and up-front we never questioned if it was correct or not, very impressed.

Agree with some things here, not others. I'm getting ready for my second listening. The overall thing for me is, that it opens up the sound so well. Some full band songs on this album always sounded cluttered and dense, due to the limitations of the equipment and that they wanted it to be raw. I like the tightened up sound. The acoustic stuff is fantastic and some of the rocking tunes really jump out with the improved bass and drums sounds.

Some of the stuff on Anthology 3 was edited, which was a big complaint at the time, like Rocky Racoon does not have that adlibed ending of Rocky finding love again, so it's nice to have these takes in their full version. Not Guilty on Anthology 3 is the same version except for Anthology 3, it was edited, actually back in the 80s for the never released Sessions comp by Geoff Emerick, and he edited out a line in the second verse and edited the first guitar solo, looped the ending and added a very annoying phase effect. This one is the complete take 102 without the additions made for Anthology 3, or actually Sessions and used for 3.

Man, I really despise what Geoff Emerick did with many of the tracks that were eventually released on the Anthology series. It was an act of butchery plain and simple. Not Guilty, What's The New Mary Jane, the acoustic demo of While My Guitar Gently Weeps with it's artificial looped ending, Mailman Bring Me No More Blues and Teddy Boy were songs that were butchered or remixed for no good reason. This is why I prefer the bootlegs over the official releases. At least on bootlegs you get to hear the songs as they were originally recorded and intended to be heard.

Great, honest review! You kind of touched on this when talking about the new mix of "Long, Long, Long"...but when listening to that song as well as others like "Julia" and "Mother Nature's Son", I found their overall levels to be too loud and kind of jarring. The fact that those tunes were a bit more hushed on the original really kind of set the mood and made it have more of an impact in my opinion.

  • @dixielandfarm

The overall thing I noticed in the mix was how the guitars reall shred - you can really hear them clearer and rawer now. You and I had the Esher demos for years, so while it never sounded clearer, it wasn't anything revealing to us fans. However, the other 3 CDs were outstanding - takes I never heard before, an overall clarity in those (opposed to being quickly mixed for a boot) - and a real peek into this process. I ALSO think While My Guitar was mixed not as well as the original and you nailed exactly what was wrong. Happiness I noticed didn't sound as foreboding in the new mix precisely because of its clarity. My only disappointment in the set is it is missing "Goodbye" which I love that song. I supposed Hey Bulldog should have also been in the set as well...

Hi Joe. I went ahead and listened to the remix of Helter Skelter again and I can sympathize with your frustrations on it. I remember when I first listened to these remixes, the HS remix bugged me because of the backing vocals were brought up too high in the mix. The drums sounded fantastic and the only thing missing was John's bass part, which is the crunchy sound you were referring to. Ironically, this may be one of the few tracks in which the bass guitar is lowered instead of brought up in the mix. And it would've worked so much better since it's primarily panned to the left of the spectrum. Although a nice touch was that you can hear Paul's speaking vocal a little more clearly in the mix after the first breakdown of the song before it starts back up again (although the guitar slides and that sort of static had to be lowered in the mix). If you search up the isolated bass of Helter Skelter, you can hear what Paul is saying a lot more clearly.

Since this is a remix, I wish Dear Prudence was not faded in. The reason why most of the songs were smashed together was because they had to squeeze them all onto vinyl records. Now, with CDs, they don't need to do that. So I wish most of the songs had a little more space in between. I wish they would have used the idea for Helter Skelter from the mono mix for this new stereo remix. They could have gotten rid of the fade out and fade in. Also, Ringo's "I've got blisters on my fingers" should have been a little bit louder. Other than these minor nitpicks, I think the new remix sounds fab. Edit: I agree about the outtake of Goodnight with the other Beatles singing along. I let out an audible "aww" when I heard that and I never go "aww". Makes me wish they would have stuck with that idea.

In the original mix of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, the last note of Clapton’s guitar solo dovetailed nicely into a note which the listener is not aware of until that note moves. It’s then, you realize that note is an organ. It was always a magical transformation to Me. I was disappointed that phenomenon was missing. Also the drum entrance into the song is not nearly as impactful as the original. I agree George Moans to loudly, but I think they were concentrating so much on the Clapton part that they over looked some subtle Sonics. Other that that, I love it and have been a fan your work on here for sometime. Keep up the good work. I don’t know how you afford all this cool stuff. Lol.

Day five of neck fusion: It’s 4:04 am and I’m in between my waking sleeping states in my recliner. Sharen was nice enough to know that the Beatles, White Album 50th Anniversary remix was released last Friday. One came for me Fed Ex. I was so excited. Last night, with Sharen’s help, I got myself downstairs and sat up for four spectacular sides of vinyl listening pleasure. She provided a mug of tea and off I went. I stayed sitting still, eyes closed and let the memories flow over me. I felt 13 again. The remix by Giles Martin, while not perfect...... there are some issues with While My Guitar Gently Weeps, ( drums are pulled back too much) I’m So Tired ( same issue with the drum fills at the end ) and Helter Skelter, ( intro guitar pulled down too much and the “I’ve got blisters on my Fingers” too low at the end.... But other than these minor issues, I sat there in my studio transfixed with a big smile on my face. I was reminded how I felt the first time I listened to the Beatles , White Album in September of 1972. I had broken my leg a few days earlier playing baseball for our Eighth grade ball team. I’d been saving grass cutting money for weeks since I first heard this double record earlier that July. A new family had moved into our neighborhood behind our street and I had met the boy that was going to be joining our Eighth grade class. I think his name was Tracy. (?) he had two older brothers who lived in their basement and had an album collection that knocked my socka off. I think they were from New York. Anyway, I was introduced to the White Album in that basement and it was unlike any record I’d ever heard before. I had to have it. BUT ..... it was a double and I was 13. It wasn’t going to be cheap. I had been cutting grass that summer and had saved about $10.00 so far by the time of my broken leg. A cast from hip to toe. Not thinking I’d even be close, I called Co-Op on Main in PEORIA one day and to my surprise, they had it on sale. $7.99. It’s still imprinted on the right upper corner of my original along with my individual numbered copy that was already past the 3,500,000 mark. Without hesitation, my dad took me to the record store in his blue VW with Silver Mag hubcaps. Two long haired guys with no shirts and a German Shepard under the counter, took my grass mowing money from my dad and in exchange laid the Beatles White Album in his hands inside a brown paper bag. Dad said they sharing some cheap wine under the counter too. I needed help changing the records from side to side as I was still getting used to standing with the cast on my left leg. Once the record began, I remember staring into my clothes closet and letting the record take me where it would. USSR, Dear Prudence, Bulgalow Bills and Warm guns. Rocky Raccoons and damn good whackings. Some meat and potatoes Rock via Yer Blues and Helter Skelter!!! The Beatles had never sounded so good. And then.....panic!!!! Revolution #9 scared the crap out of me in that bedroom and it wasn’t even dark yet. That song still unnerves me to this day. So there I was last night..... instead of a 13 year old with a cast on my leg, I was a 59 year old with a neck brace around my head and healing from major surgery. The feelings were so similar. Time seemed to stand still. This remix is amazing and after getting back upstairs, i felt tired , so I got ready for bed in my recliner a happy man. I’ll be looking forward to the deluxe Box set this Christmas.

Listen to Sexy Sadie with head phones, Giles was able to spread the drums out. The tom fills are on each of the channels. I don't know how he did it with the druma being recorded on one channel, but it feels like a natural stereo spread.

I bought the 3CD set paid £20 I'm all for it and bought it.. I'm still debating, need to hear properly but if the Sgt pepper remix by Giles is anything to go buy. I'm sure worth a listen. The demos again on disc 3 nice to have though heard. No way would I pay for the super deluxe versions. I can't help but feel cheated though when they were going on about the 09 remastered versions.. cash cow feeling.. can't help but feel offended buying it over again in a space of 9 years!!! Good review enjoyed think I have about 5 copies now on CD 🤔

Btw, I think of the Beatles catalog, John shines brightest on the White Album (every one of his songs is an impassioned gem) while Abbey Road is Paul’s crowning moment IMO. George did his best work across both albums.

You’re absolutely right about Helter Skelter...the “chugging” sound of John playing the Fender VI bass is almost non-existent. The silly reverb thing on Pauls voice towards the end and the extremely low Ringo remark at the end make this mix an abomination. You have to seek out the 5.1 mixes...they’re excellent...and believe it or not Revolution 9 is great in that format. Keep up the good work!

I agree with Helter Skelter, I do sound engineering alongside production, and Giles disappointed me a lot on his mix. I’m inclined to revert back to the 1998 remaster or a mix I did using the Rock Band multitracks where the fade is absent and a count-in by Ringo

Well, I think you’re right about the remix on the white album super deluxe box set... my best friend from high school bought The super deluxe box set three days ago and he let me listen to that box set on my stereo system, it does sound different... i’m not saying that the late George Martin’s son work on this box set is lousy because it’s not, but I think he did sugar coated the Beatles Live at the Hollywood bowl CD that came out two years ago did! In a nutshell, I give this box site four stars!

That’s so funny about Helter Skelter. When you said there was a second song you were disappointed with I immediately thought Helter Skelter. Personally it was the only track I was disappointed with. The drums sound weird. Very isolated with a TON of reverb. I just thought it was funny that I guessed Helter Skelter. Nice review. Overall I’m very pleased with Giles remix except for the bizarre HS.

Hi Joe. An honest review. Not praising it up into heaven, but also mentioning some things you are not that fond of.I think the remix is a giant step ahead. The only thing that I am wondering about is why put the snippet of Let It Be, Blue Moon and You're So Square on the sessions. They don't fit at all. The Esher Demos are way better in quality, comparing them to the bootleg. And I am glad that the character of the album, a little unpolished, was kept intact. And....... I like the 13 minutes bluesy version of Helter Skelter. The remix of Helter Skelter I don't like that much, the 2009 version and the original 1968 sounds heavier. The more I play the album the more I think that John has some really strong songs on this album, while in the past I always liked the Paul songs more.

Glad you saw the Giles Martin interview. His comments were indeed quite revealing. With you on George's voice being too much at the end of WMGGW. BUT, I think the rest of the song is a brilliant remix. Yer Blues is the shining start on side three. Helter Skelter should have been the high point of side 3, but it isn't. Missed opportunity on that one. The Mono remix of it is still king. Revolution 9 is usually when I go take the dogs for a walk. Goodnight's beauty is very nicely enhanced. Its a much much better mix of the song. Sounds like the CDs leave the same impressions as the vinyl. Nice! Stopped watching when you got into the sessions tracks. Don't want to hear about them until I first have my own listen.

FitToBe Tie Dyed - I don't know if you watched Brian Bringelson's review, but he has played both the vinyl and the CD, and he feels the CD was superior in this case (and he says he never feels that way, so it might be interesting to check out). Regarding the Mono mix of HELTER SKELTER, the fact that it does not fade out and return later, and is missing Ringo's iconic "blisters" shot at the end, immediately disqualifies it for me! However, I must revisit it at some point to check of I prefer the overall mix.

  • @llewellynGS1

I noticed a couple of things you didnt mention: "Wild Honey Pie" the guitars are far more clear and crazy sounding than before, also the backing vocal is louder. "I'm so tried" the backing vocal louder. There is a part to it that wasn't even heard before. On "Yer Blues" the main difference with John's voice is that reverb and echo have been added. Go back and listen to the original and you will hear the difference. I agree with you on "Helter Skelter". I feel the vocals have been brought up, at the expense of the guitars and bass - which is a mistake I think - its a guitar heavy song, not a song to revel in the backing vocals. John's bass has lost its high end punch, and is buried panned left - which takes away the raw heavy feel. I also dont like the new mix of "Savoy Truffle", one of my favourites, as I feel it is not as heavy.

I'm impressed - so far - with the remixes; more clarity and definition. (Check out the level of the strings in "Glass Onion"!) Haven't listened to the outtakes/demos yet. Not so happy with the quality of the packaging. The CD's are housed in slots very prone to tearing - after removing mine only a couple of times there's already slight rips in the surrounding sleeve. Disappointing for this kind of money.
