Hi John, Loved the new mix. I noticed the bass front and center... more and more. The vocals more clear... I never ever remember hearing Lennon clearly pronouncing the end of a syllable on Revolution 1. Good Night is exceptional. I enjoyed the Esher as well. Did not hear all of the rest of the sessions. You could see in some of the demos that a lot of the songs were almost ready. Keep classy, Mr. Heaton Tino

I thought they did a great job on this. Glass Onion and While My Guitar Gently Weeps really stood out for me. The only one that didn't impress me was Helter Skelter. It just doesn't sound as raw and hard hitting as the original. I'm also annoyed that they didn't include the 27-minute long version of Helter Skelter, but the 12-minute alternate take kind of makes up for it.

John, I agree, on one hand Long, long, long still retains it's original qualities, but a bit clearer. But personally I would have liked a less murky, and crisper mix. I also noted hiss still present on a couple of tracks, Honey Pie was one of them (and not just the intro vintage effect!). The Inner Light sticks out as one of the best sounding tracks. The accompanying book with the 7 disk set is superb

I bought The White Album on it's release date back in 1968. I have also bought the subsequent anniversary editions over the years. In my opinion this is by far the best mix. The DTS 5.1 mix on the Blu Ray version is superb. It's as if you are sat in the studio when it was recorded. The two channel stereo mix sound flat in comparison.

I bought it on release day (US) also in 1968. But there was a treat before that: the city FM station played the entire LP, all four sides, without commercials, every weekday night for two weeks before it was released. And during those weekends played all of it at random, amid all sorts of other prior "Beatles" recordings.

Nice review as always Mr Heaton. I purchased the deluxe cd set. A wonderful experience so far. The packaging is wonderful with all of the goodies. Would have liked it if they would've included one of the posters from back then advertising the album that is shown in the book. Still,....there really is not too much to nit pick about this set. I think everybody has their minimal dislikes. Overall, I love the overall mix that Giles Martin did to this album. There's a crispness and clarity and a more separation of sound on every song throughout the set. With that said, I never really had any problem with the original mix done by George Martin. On the extras, love the Escher cd. I can finally throw my bootleg away now. lol. Not a huge fan of the instrumentals on the Sessions discs, but, I did find myself trying to do my best Paul singing to "Back in the USSR" which is fun. Also, I did find on the sessions discs there were a few tracks where I would have preferred different takes from those that were used. I wished they would have included "Revolution 1"(Take 20) instead of 18. Although Lennon's vocals on both takes are the same, Take 18 is stripped down, whereas, Take 20 is pretty much the version on the original album but it also has a sort of screaming guitar(or something) that fades in and out and goes on and on for 10:48 making it a much freakier version. I just really love this version. Kind of a mix between Revloution 1 and 9. I can do without the slow, plodding version of "Helter Skelter" that was on the Anthology 3. Minor squabbles. Still, a wonderful early christmas present to us all.

Another excellent review. I bought the box set and have been immersing myself ever since. First time to listen to the Esher demos, other than the ones on the Anthology, and like you I found them to be of varying interest. Many of the remixes grabbed me, specially on headphones with the exception of "Yer Blues" which for some reason lost something in translation, and I can't put my finger on it. On the session discs, I really, really loved "Goodnight." (take 10)

I love this remix , granted it doesn't sound that different but its crisper , clearer with the vocals more prominent . Particularly noticed this on Dear Prudence and Warm Gun. Also adore Martha without brass and strings. The eclectic nature of the album has always been its strength plus the stripped down acoustic style of lots of tracks both Pauls and Johns influenced by being written in India sitting around with acoustic guitars.

Great review John. I prefer the original 1968 mix, yes it's a brighter production but it's how all 4 of The Beatles intended it. We are just getting Ringo and Paul’s recommendation sadly not all 4. I have to say though the new mix is great and well worth having another soundscape of the album.

White Album 87 cd is very close to a master tape. Imo It sounds very natural, maybe too flat at some point. 2009 Remaster is equalised, too goosed for my ears. But none of this digital versions can compare with original UK LP. On the other hand, songs at the end of a lp side have very poor quality. The first time when people could listen to Long Long Long transparently was on 1987 release campaing.

We all have different priorities re. our disposable income, and if I had different priorities I'd be just like you, having each new version of every Beatles album. This one would be very near the top of the list; probably at the very top. I'll get this one, certainly, one day. The CD version. Geoff Emerick was sadly bitter in much of his reminiscences, especially towards George Harrison, and George Martin was simply wrong. This is an inspired album, and had to be a double album.

The White Album is loaded with excellent songs, however if they had other songs waiting in the wings they should have used them. Revolution #9 is a waste of vinyl. John should have released it on a solo album. The songs Wild Honey-Pie and Honey-Pie, along with Goodnight could have been replaced. Paul has the tendency to write Grandma Music, or Turkey Music on occasion. Honey Pie is Turkey Music, When I’m 64, You Gave Me The Answer and Baby’s Request are all Turkey Music. That doesn’t make them automatically bad, but he should have set them aside and released a full album of that type of music.

Can't do remixes. No way. Mental block. You don't do touch-ups on the Mona Lisa. I remember around 1996 the Who's albums started coming out again on CD and here and there they were remixed. It was very unsettling. And besides this album had such an other-wordly, spooky vibe to it and in part that was because it sounded so strange. Demented. I prefer to only know the original. Thank you.

After three months of being in possession on the new 2018 White Album I have to admit to my greatest discontent that it bores me to death. Life seems to have been sucked out from this album. I have lived in confusion for the past 90days: oh my God I don’t like THEM,any more , has my life been a fraud? Are the Beatles no good? So I reverted last week to the 2009 version, on the first note of Back in the USSR I started to sweat, when While my guitar gently weeps came I was worried, will I like it?But I was on the verge of tears and I said « Putain c’est bon!!! » ( i’m French, but you can imagine what it means). We need apologies from Universal/Apple/GilesM/PMcCartney - the White Album 50th Anniversary is wrong (apart from the two original discs remixed), it is cheating fans and drawing money from our pockets - there should be an additional disc (nr3) including final remixex/mixes of Hey Jude, Inner Light, Not Guilty, What's the New Mary Jane, Lady Madonna, Revolution (single vers), full fast version of Helter Skelter leading to Ringo's uttering "I have blisters on my fingers," also could probably include You Know My Name since recording sessions span 1967 - 69, also Hey Bulldog (recorded with Lady Madonna) - like on Sgt. Pepper 50th there are final mixes of Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane, the session discs could include two/three versions of Sexy Sadie, Not Guilty, and others, showing evolution of the songs, and not the same as on the Anthology series (including the same versions as on Anthology is really cheating us), also are we interested in instrumental versions ? - NOT in J. Lennon's voice ?, also the positive atmosphere is not true - Ringo Starr and Geoff Emerick left : "lost interest in the White Album because they were really arguing amongst themselves and swearing at each other" (GEmerick), why is Giles M lying ? - take this guy Giles M away from it ! - the only professional guy at remixing these days is Steven Wilson who has done GentleGiant, JethroTull, Yes, KingCrimson, Marillion - and everybody is happy with his work - the next time they return to White Album will be in around 20 years - me dead / also - it's a crime to have sped up She's Leaving Home on Sgt. Pepper 2017 remix
