About the high number of new songs in 1968, there was also George's "Not Guilty," which was left off of the White Album. I agree that this album has a huge variety of musical styles, and they are great.

I’m with Tim Wadsworth, “The White…”. Particularly fond of John’s songs on The White Album. Julia is so utterly beautiful. Happiness is a Warm Gun, Dear Prudence, Yer Blues. Thank you!

John this is a great video. I concur with everything you said. My White Album story goes back to around 1981. I think it was the last Beatles album I listened to, probably because it was a double. First time hearing it, I hated it, and the second and even third time. But then something changed. Gradually the songs implanted in my head and through time I became obsessed with it. The sheer scale and diversity of it is as you point out, incredible. So many people highlight Revolution 9, but it is central to the electicism of the album. There's absolutely nothing I would change about it. I've listened to it repeatedly over the years and more than any other Beatles album (although for some reason Rubber Soul would give it a run!). I think it is the greatest album of all time and I've listened to them all and I've felt that way for many many years (I do adore Exile on Main Street by The Stones which gives it a run for its money) My only disappointment is I've never heard the Mono version despite owning about 7 different formats of this album down through the years. Thanks for your videos, I really find them informative and enjoyable.

My current favourite songs on the album by John are “I’m so tired”, and “Cry baby cry”. I think the bands heavier rock sound on some of the tracks is what makes it a favourite of mine. Although Blackbird is a popular McCartney song on the album, “Mother natures son” is my preference. I am always switching between what’s my favourite version of “while my guitar gently weeps” by George. The acoustic version which George plays has a somber mood to it which was used to great effect on the closing titles to an Anthology episode. Probably tensions within the band help create this great album.

The White Album was my favorite album just few years ago. it was for maybe 15 years. But now I am coming back to my original favorite, Sgt. Peppers. With Magi9cal Mystery Tour just behind. I left that nine in there.

The Beatles (aka the White Album), which I bought on the day of release, has some great tracks on it but a lot of it was really individual tracks. Had Brian Epstein been alive it would very probably have been a single album. Picking a best album is not easy for those of us who lived all the way through their active years. Every single and album release changed what had gone before in popular music. So it was all very exciting and sticks clearly in the memory. Let’s not forget how young they were and how quickly they progressed. From Please Please Me LP to A Hard Day’s Night just 18 months later where we got If I Fell, And I Love Her. I Should Have Known Better etc etc, classic songs. A year later we got the most recorded song in history at track 6 of side. I’m with Geoff Emerick.

A nice overview of the White album . It would probably rank about 4th in my list of favourite Beatles albums . (. behind Rubber Soul , Abbey Road , and A Hard Day's Night .) I was 10 when I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show , and purchased all of their album on the day they were first released . We got Canadian versions of their albums , which differed slightly from the US Capitol versions for the first few albums , and after that they synced up with the US versions . Because I was raised on these versions , my favourite version of my favourite album is the US version of Rubber Soul . When we finally got the UK versions in Canada a number of years later , it was odd not to hear Rubber Soul start with I've Just Seen a Face , and not include It's Only Love . Even though the UK version has more songs , I'm still enamoured with the US version . Anyway , they're all great versions . Cheers !!!

Nice review John! Totally agree! Its that circus organ that drives me nuts on "Don't Pass Me By" can't handle it. It was nice to hear them get back to the rock band sound, after Peppers etc. Dont know what their best L.P. is?, but this is my favorite! 😉 John, Paul, & George shine on this album. Fantastic!

Aaah, those were the days when you had a choice of record shops in every town, plus Woolworths, Boots and Smiths all selling records. I've always thought that Everybody's Got Something To Hide was the blueprint for Slade. Are we sure that Can You Take Me Back is part of Cry Baby Cry or Revolution 9?

Ringo stayed in Rishikesh for ten days, Paul stayed for five weeks, whereas John and George left Rishikesh in a hurry after nearly two months. George spent a further ten daysl in/near Madras, meeting up with Ravi Shankar before going home. John and George arrived in Rishikesh four days before Paul and Ringo, and Paul left a mere seventeen days before John and George. All this according to BeatlesBible. John's claim that he and George stayed for about four months (whilst promoting Apple with Paul in New York not even *three months* after John and George arriving in India) is just funny. After arriving back in Britain, and before going to New York, John even had time to get together with Yoko and recording Two Virgins.

Maybe .. but there is a case for Rubber Soul. Revolver , Sergeant Pepper , Abbey Road or the White Album to be their finest hour . Which one is best changes on a daily basis. Pepper used to be held up as their masterpiece and peak now its Revolver . I like Abbey Road a hell of a lot . The production and arrangements are gorgeous and such a contrast to the somewhat ragged sound of Let it Be recorded six months earlier but released the next year . The White Album is eclectic with sounds from folk , country , reggae to hard rock and blues. Its a wonderful explosion of creativity with the odd dud song thrown in. So .... if you were going to a Desert Island for one year and you could take one Beatles album which would it be ? Its a question I often ponder and yes I know its like choosing your favourite child. I guess it would have to be Abbey Road but in the morning it might be Rubber Soul and the next day Revolver .... and so it goes on.

Since this seems to be a re-edit, I will modify my comment from the first edition where _peak_ doesn't seem to be the right word: to my ears, The Beatles achieved the highest level of their several-years long _plateau_ in 1966-1967 (singles, all of Revolver, some of Sgt. Pepper's, some of Magical Mystery Tour double EP, All Too Much), with many other great songs on either side of it, and into the early 1970s, a bit in the 1980s by Paul and George.

Hi John. I like the white album and you are not alone in thinking it’s their best work. My only down side is that there is too much filler that is forgettable. But the well known tracks are really good. For me personally it’s probably rubber soul or revolver. If I was marooned on a desert island with one Beatles record it would prob be rubber soul. I also love abbey road. PS you said you didn’t want to show it to the camera as it’s in mint condition - what difference is that going to make ?!

fair comment but hard to imagine the album without it....i think it is brilliantly sequenced between Cry Baby Cry (ending with 'can you take me back where i came from?') and the soothing 'goodnight'' - ending the album on an uplifting note

The White Album is also my favorite (vs the “best” for which I’d say Abbey Road). However, the album ends for me after Cry Baby Cry. I rarely listen to Rev 9 and Good Night. Imagine if they were replaced by Hey Jude and either Not Guilty or Hey Bulldog.

Here's my counterargument: Even the weaker moments on Beatles albums are generally good, and certainly not outright bad. The White Album however has, IMO, three bad tracks: "Revolution 9" (not only bad, but also quite long and a total mood killer), "Revolution 1" ("shooby-doo-wop"; doesn't work), and "Good Night" (which done differenttly might have been decent but with this presentation is IMO bad). The rest is fantastic, but I'd say 15+ minutes of bad material disqualifies a Beatles album from ranking as the group's best.

Their finest hour is definitely one of the 5 albums below but not Let it Be . There are some great songs on it but a lot of filler . Dig a Pony , One after 909 , Georges songs are slight and nowhere near the quality of his songs on Abbey Road. Its redeeming feature is that songs were recorded live and its the nearest we get to a later Beatles live album. Six months later they went back to Abbey Road with George Martin and produced an album which , despite their knowing it was probably the last, is as polished and superbly produced as anything they did. The medley is a masterpiece which is largely down to the genius of Paul and George Martin.
