See, this is why I love your channel so much, and watching your videos. You always have a great way of putting everything into perspective, and explaining everything so everyone from the newest fan to the most die-hard collector can understand and appreciate what is happening in the world of the Beatles. Great review! I loved how you explained so many little things that I neglected to mention in my video. But then again, I may have spoken about a few things that you did not. That's what makes this little Beatles community so special, we all bring our own personalities and our own take to every situation. And you certainly did so in this one, in spades! Fantastic job Joe, so happy you are enjoying it and like the mix as much as I do. All the best you and talk soon, Matt

You are absolutely right, Brian. At this point in my life, I find myself almost shedding a tear each time the album reaches its climatic ending after that magnificent medley. And then, the breaking of the emotional tension with "Her Majesty" invariably breaks the tension with a big smile for me. A perfect ending to a perfect album.

Thank you so much for your rich, in-depth and very understandable reviews, Joe!! Do you have critique videos of foreign Beatle singles, too? That would be great to watch and hear, also!! Thanks again!! Tom.

Very good review. I agree with a lot of what you said. As with you, the one thing that really stood out to me was the new remix of Oh! Darling. I don't think I ever really noticed the harmonies until listening to this version. That goes with a few other songs too. The beautiful harmonies are really brought forward and they sound great. This is really a great set and I'm happy to add it to my collection. It likely will be my go to when listening to Abbey Road.

Nice review. It seems the reception of this remix is overall positive, which is how I feel as well. This release has really breathed new life and interest in this album (as if it’s ever gone away). The excitement and discussion justifies the project. These releases are keeping The Beatles alive in a way other huge artists, like Elvis (know you’re a big fan), have not endured. It’s really quite amazing.

My favourite is “I want you (she’s so heavy” which if you A/B with the 2009 remaster is so much cleaner and just a nicer mix from start to finish.

Not surprising, Joe. First time I heard rain was on powerhouse WBZ Boston in the mid sixties while in high school. The disc jockey talked all through its premier playing and his name was Bruce Bradley. Time flies........She's so Heavy is my favorite on Abbey Road. A quick story, a friend of mine was stationed in Korea in 1970, and was in a night club listening to heavy, and happened to reach for the lights at the instant it ended! It got quite a reaction!

Hi Joe - I agree with you that this mix overall is very pleasing, and its amazing the clarity and extra bass and drums, and clear up front vocals, but that also there are some minor things that slightly frustrate. I dont mind the missing John gasp on "Come together" as much as some other things. On "I want you" (my favourite track) its very good expect the excellent bass by Paul is now even more buried. it was one of the highlights. On "Sun King" the vocals are amazing, but there is an organ part I am used to that is buried now. Also on that track there is a lead guitar on right channel that is too loud in my opinion. But overall, this including outakes, is a very pleasing set. (by the way the oooooh's on "Oh Darling" were there before, just a lot more distant. I also thought that now, looking back, the outakes on this and "White Album" and "Pepper" make what we got on anthology look very poor. Anthology would have been much stronger to include some of these.

  • @justlookin626

Love your review. One thing I noticed on "I Want You" (and didn't care for) is Billy Preston's organ. I love that it's brought out front in the main part of the song, but during the extended fade, when he's really wailing, the organ all but disappears in the mix. I was also hoping Ringo's drums would be centered and louder in the mix on "You Never Give Me Your Money". They weren't, but otherwise another stellar job by Giles.

i have to agree on most things you mentioned. One thing though is that, being older original (or 2nd gen. fans) we have boxed ourselves listening wise into a corner sometimes when it comes to expecting what has always been tried and true. Sort of like the little mistakes on say " hold me tight" by paul which he sings out of tune on one line and we Love IT.... I think though, if one gets through the Set in Stone attitude ( which i have as well), i find the NEW can sometimes be a revelation of sorts whereas a new listener who never heard the original will be blown away by the ambiance of the new mix and perhaps we have to be like kids again hearing it for the first time. Just an observation of course and it is trivial i admit. Like i said though, i agree with pretty much your assesment on the new project and i applaud you for it. I am on my 5th listen and still finding new things i overlooked initially. The nice thing as always is we will always have the original if we so choose and now the (dare i say) new album which does not come very often in Beatledom. God, i felt like a little kid again unwrapping this boxset and that old feeling is a very special feeling indeed.... The outakes are great and like you said brings us right there in the recording studio with the boys for the first time (perhaps in the booth just off center to the four). Thanks for the great review my freind.

I've read many reviews, but enjoyed your perspective very much. I love all Beatle outtakes, alternate versions, remasters and remixes. And really enjoy hearing instruments and vocals pop out like never before. BUT - one thing which can tend to get overlooked a bit with the remixes is masterful production of George Martin. My analogy is soup. The remix is like fresh made soup - you can taste each individual vegetable and ingredient. The original or 2009 CD remaster is the same soup, but after it's been in the refrigerator for a day or two - the flavors have melded into an integrated composite flavor. This is where it sounds like a Beatle "record" as opposed to a crystal clear performance. No harm done though - we still have the originals. 😉

Listened to the remix. Have a lower end system and not particular about having great sound so was quite happy with the remix. Heard some sounds, vocals not heard before on my only copy of the album (1987 CD). LOVE the outtakes and demos!!! So my grouse here is why the heck are they so skimpy on the outtakes (specifically on the Super Deluxe set), with less than 90 minutes on 2 discs. They could have at least included Something with the 5 minute 'jam' at the end or the Octopus's Garden mono etc.

Hi Again Mr Mayo - I have been doing some comparisons between the tracks from 2009 re-master and the new remix. Here is what I would say so far, for the following tracks, for the new re-mix: - "Come Together": Positive: Much more clarity, more bass, clear vocals, and on the coda much louder drums. Negative: In the intro parts, Ringo's drums are actually softer. On the coda, John's vocals in between the "Come Together's" are much lower; creating the burying of his oohs and aahs. - "Something": Overall much clearer, higher quality. - "Maxwell's Silver Hammer": Positive: Much clearer, better separation of instruments; drums much better, and more centered. Vocals great. Negative: Guitar solos not so vibrant. They were actually better mixed softer. - "Here comes the Sun": Overall much brighter, vocals and drums now centered. Much better. I need to do comparisons for the rest. But one other thought I had was that Giles Martin seems to always favour lead guitar over rhythm. An example is "Everybody's got something to Hide" from white album. It is much more hard hitting on the original, mainly due to the electric rhythm being lower. have a listen...

Aside from the overall "wow" value for me.. from what I've heard so far, I was taken by the fact I could hear Ringo's drums move between the speakers as if he were playing facing me. The sound was just making my jaw drop on all the tracks I listened to. Outstanding! I'm sold and will be getting my copy soon. Good, solid review. Thanks Joe.

Good job, Joe The bass riff from "Old Brown Shoe" is brilliant but Macca is the greatest melodic bass player in the world and of all time.

I think the 1987 remaster holds far more weight than the 2019 remix on cd, but the blu ray audio is massively where you find the best fidelity both in stereo pcm and 5.1 atmos.

Looks like Abbey Road will hit #1 in the UK with 12k sold and possibly #1 in the US with 75-80k in sales. Not sure how that compares to the sales of Pepper and WA, but I guess those physical sales numbers are enough to earn a number one chart position these days. Not bad for a 50 year old Beatles album!

This is is the best remix by far I agree. Sgt pepper was pretty good, didn't much like white album, kind of hit and miss but this one is great all the way through.

Wonder how many copies purchased of the new remix are first time buyers of "Abbey Road"? I think most customers of AR 50 probably already own multiple copies of the album. That said......I'm sure any newbies will thoroughly enjoy this Beatles masterpiece.

Joe here is a quote for you....”in the sea of crap and trash that dominate the UK and US charts these days, thank God that the cream rises to the top every now and then, and for a second time for Abbey Road”. #1 in UK and #3 on the US albums charts. The Beatles are #3 on the Artist 100. Beatles 1, Sgt Pepper, White Album all back in the top 200. And yes the new Abbey Road CD does sound great in the car!

I guess I'm the only person on the planet who hears the solo on Something as mixed too low. Also, does no one hear the distortion in the first couple of notes of the solo???

I wonder what they'll do for th 60th anniversary of Abbey Road? You'll probably be able to remix it yourself! They're will always be a market for something Beatles.

I don't know why they put banding between each track on the new LP..it also has noise in the banding area. The 2009 remaster did not have banding. I too don't like that John's groaning is very low in the mix at end of Come Together..the rest I really like. Just the banding bothers me, giving.more surface noise between tracks

Robert P - I suppose banding is so that people can place the stylus between songs when they wish to go to a certain track.

Good, detailed review. Some KZreadr posted a vocals-only version of Abbey Road, and another posted an isolated bass version under the title, "Abbey Road- but it's just bass", for all you Beatles fans on a budget, as I am.
