Can you take vintage drums and make modern metal music with them? I have no clue, but we're going to try in this video. I take a vintage Ludwig Jazz Festival snare, the same model that Ringo Starr used with The Beatles, plus an even older chrome over brass Ludwig Super 400 to give it a go.
Normally, when I think of metal drummers, I think of guys using double bass Tama Drums Starclassic or Superstar kits. Or I think of guys like Matt Garska using his beautiful DW Drums kit in an exotic finish. You might even think about Ludwig Drums, but you'd probably be thinking of something made in the last 10 years instead of drums made before you were born. So, stick around right now to find out if either one of those old stinky snares actually keeps up with some modern metal music!
The snares here are paired here with a vintage 1987 Yamaha Recording Custom kit with a 22x14" kick drum, 12x8 rack tom, and a 16x16 floor tom.
Alongside the drums, you'll see Turkish Cymbals 15" Millennium hats, 20" Meta Crash, 22" Millennium Ride, and a 18" Zildjian Oriental China cymbal.
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling.
Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In)
- Dr. Alien Smith Alien8 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I would eat Lou Malnati's pizza every meal for the rest of my life if I could.
And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com/

hahaha Thank you so much. I hope you enjoy the video!!
What’s nice about a jazzfest is it’s a bit drier than a lot of wooden drums and it’s also about 5db quieter than a Supraphonic, probably around 10db quieter than a brass snare. So it’s nice for your ears to practice with.

Agreed. When you're playing pop, folk, jazz, or anything in between, this is a great drum live and in the studio. It'll do almost anything well...maybe just not metal. hahaha
You got a Jim Beatle autograph! That’s worth a fortune. 😂

I love those old 3-ply shells - but the brass just has that 'cut'.

I was blown away at the difference between that Jazz Fest and the Super 400. Despite that brass drum being over 60 years old, it just sounds good in such a timeless way.

@@timbofromkeno Maybe next a brass vs aluminum? I've got both - but no mic's like your's to really compare nuances.

@@PatrickWitherow That's definitely in the pipeline. I've got the 5" and 6.5" aluminum Supras, and I've got the 5" COB Super 400 and the 6.5" Black Beauty. So, That would be a fun little video!
Perhaps some of the greatest Drum Faces to grace KZread. ps I love this channel. pps your drumming is super tight. would love you to do some vids on some of the fills you do. super solid.

Thanks so much for the kind words, Dave! I definitely want to do more videos on my actual approach to drumming (including the fill stuff). Gimme some time and I’ll iron that up!!

hahaha There's something magical about this particular kick drum. From the second I got it under mics, it just shined. It's a 22x14" Yamaha Recording Custom. It's just insane. I love it!
Dunno. I think you could do a Beatles mashup with... ("Wow! I really don't listen to any new metal...") Mastodon, and have the snare give it that authentic edge. I mean Coroner covered I Want You (She's So Heavy). I'll go back to my perseverating about my bowels and nap time now.

Heads also change everything. I think with an Evans Heavyweight Dry, that wood snare might fair a little bit better. AND more wires on the bottom could help too. : )

Do the brass hoops hold up to rimshots?
@timbofromkeno

They've got some wear after 60 years, but they're still in decent shape. I definitely think I'm going to get a new COB batter hoop for that Super 400, though. And then I don't have to worry about ruining the original. lol
yeah man these kids and their blast beats these days hahaha!

When I was a teen, I was able to keep up with this stuff. In my mid-30s... not so much. 😂
I just picked up a 1962 jazzfest from the Chicago Drum Show, but I absolutely do not use it for metal 😁But someone easily could. It's a great sounding drum.
