He wasn't explosive, flashy or bombastic, isn't mentioned in the same breath as drummers like Bonham or Moon, but he was absolutely the perfect drummer for the Beatles. Everything he did was very original; he had his own distinctive "voice" on the drums, and everything he added to these songs fit in so perfectly. He's rarely recognized or celebrated for how good he actually was.

"A band's as good as its drummer" said Ginger Baker, somebody who well and truly knew that. Chilli Pepper's drummer Chad Smith didn't seem to understand that properly, asking Ginge in an interview in 2019 if he thought Ringo was "any good", to which he replied "Any good??? - he was the drummer in the fucking Beatles mate!". Likewise, he wouldn't have a bad word said about Charlie Watts either: Ringo and Charlie did the drummer's job perfectly, as explained by Ginge: "Your job is to make the other guys sound good, that's your gig." Ringo is the master of tempo, and his punctuation perfect, the fills in "Day in the Life", "Strawberry Fields", "Something" etc, etc. are as melodic as Lennon, McCartney and Harrison's tunesmithery, you can't play "I Feel Fine", "Ticket to Ride", "Get Back", "I Want You...she's so heavy" or any of it really without learning your rudiments and developing your technique, which Ringo already had in place when he joined. He was actually the Beatles best player.

@@indianajones5037 George was an utterly unique guitarist, playing melody rather than flash, not tied to scales and seemingly incapable of, as you said, playing a sour note. You're probably right he was the best musician there actually, and he shared that unorhodox quality with Ringo, who was left-handed playing a right-handed drum setup. His contributions to Ringo's "It Don't Come Easy", the gorgeously melodic leslie-phased intro and slide solo (a great tune in itself) made it my fave post-Beatles solo (well, duo actually) single, and I think he probably wrote most of it too.

I do enjoy your song guessing game videos!! Charlie's drum tone is a little off from Ringo's, and Ringo's swing is so hard to match JUST SO but he does a good job and this video really, really proves how much Ringo did what was needed _for the song_ and wasn't just there to pursue his drumming ego with fills and showmanship. What he plays is so difficult and rhythmic which contributed so much to the deceptively complex sounds of The Beatles that keep us coming back 60 years later!
