When you listen to the isolated part of Helter Skelter, you really can understand why it's considered the first metal song 😮

Yes. I was actually shocked to hear how heavily distorted that is! I always thought the heaviness came from the combination of everybody just playing at full intensity, maybe clipping the recording desk a bit. Had no idea that much saturation was available back then
@andrewpappas9311

And it was written because Paul McCartney heard that Pete Townshend described The Who's song I Can See For Miles as "the heaviest thing we've ever done" so he wanted to record one of his own, and thus the first heavy metal song was born
@paulhaynes8045

This is pure McCartney revisionism. It's a good song, in fact one of my favourite from that LP, but it's far too clean and neat to be 'heavy metal'. It's McCartney - he couldn't write a dirty, rough song if he wanted to. Lennon does much the same when he claims the B52s are copying him and Yoko when they were at their worst (sorry, I meant 'experimental'). Is it not enough just to be a Beatle, just to be one of the two most important song-writers in history?! What next - Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da the first reggae song?

@@buddyneher9359 Not sure if you've done it already, but it would be wild to try and identify Beatle tunes from backwards snippets of their songs. You can try and trick everyone with a couple of already backwards sections that seem to come out normal when played backward. Would be quite confusing.

If this quiz tells you anything it’s how masked the underlying guitar parts can be in the complex structure of very iconic songs.
that "All My Loving" part is so easy to me, as a fan of the late Chet Atkins (which is the reason George play that style and used Gretsch because George is a big fan of)

I got all 12/12 so I'm happy about that, George Harrison was my first major guitar influence growing up and is still one of my biggest heroes and he definitely wrote a number of great guitar parts during the band's run. David, because you got 11, I must say, I am mostly a harmonica player, but I see these intros, as a soft entry into, the major note, playing the scale around the bottom of the top note, so that the beginning of the song starts off with a bang, boom, frontal aggression on the vocal line....
@DavidLPeel

@cal.anonymous7970 I don't really understand much about what you are talking about. For me I'm a massive Beatles fan and it's the challenge of recognising parts of familiar songs that have isolated. What key they are in or what the scale is, is all beyond me.

Hi David, interesting test! I'm a guitar player and I studied the Beatles for 20+ years: I'm not totally satisfied with my result, 9/12, but not too bad either I guess...
10 out of 12. Nowhere Man really threw me. Fun video. Thanks David
Some of those clips were narsty editing, props to whoever put it together. I don't know some of these, some I knew and recognized, but a couple selections I knew the song but had no flipping idea what the selection was. Very well selected.
10/12. Was totally foxed by numbers 7 & 10. Great quiz.
Ticket to ride was one of the few I even got 😂 The fact that nowhere man escaped me is going to haunt me forever. Love these vids.
10/12 - happy with that!
That’s funny. The first time I heard the piece of song 10, I also immediately thought it was You Can’t do That, but the second time I realized it was the B section from Ticket to Ride. The isolated guitar sounds a lot more bluesy than the song all together. I never really noticed the sort of Ray Charles thing with the 7th on that D chord before.
Got them all... but some were challenging!
these are my favourite videos
A really great quiz. I scored 7 out of 12.
7 out of 12….great quiz!
I love these, David! Thank you for another fun video. I love it when I can hear the song and you can't and i'm pulling for you to get it 😂 I was so certain I was going to get 12/12 😂 but i got 11/12 and the only song i legitimately had no clue on was song 10. The only song i could think of was "You Can't Do That" but i knew that wasn't right. The only reason I got "Now And Then" is because (I'm pretty sure) George never played slide while they were together. I think the story goes he got interested in it when he was on tour with Bonnie and Delaney. Also, I think that was Mccartney playing slide on the song as a tribute to George. Please correct me if you're reading this and I got any of those things wrong 😊
12/12! Got all of them! Haven’t even listened to 3 albums yet (Please Please Me, A Hard Day’s Night and Beatles For Sale) yet still smashed it!
10/12! nice!
12/12. No. 11 was the most challenging, but I got it after a few more listens. Putting the vocals on top of the isolated guitar in my head really helped lol
8/12 myself. These are so much fun!

Great video and well done, got 12/12, for me it's easier to think of the tone of the guitar to clock in fast what song it is. I think the only one that made me think a little was Nowhere man, because when I think of that song I think about the jingly electric guitar
It's amazing how differently the brain of a pianist works than that of a guitarist. I am often stumped on these quizzes, but (as a guitarist) these clips all seemed very obvious. That being said, I still muffed "Nowhere Man" and "Now and Then" (!?) ...
