The Bearded Dame and Her Lessons on Self Love

Harnaam Kaur is a woman, a model and an anti-bullying activist who possesses a very unique feature: an amazing beard. She was born with polycystic ovarian syndrome-a condition that can cause diabetes, alopecia and facial hair growth. Although she is proud of how she looks now, Kaur's journey to authentic self-acceptance was not easy. Along the way, she overcame bullying, suicide attempts and her own self doubt to become the person she is today.

I have PCOS and the facial hair is the worst. I have to shave every couple of days. I don't mind the weight, the low libido, the irregular periods but the facial hair and male characteristics drive me crazy. I don't feel like a girl somedays. The hormonal imbalance also caused anxiety and depression but thankfully I looked for help. It truly is inspiring to see someone so bold and beautiful.

She may be ugly to you and yes you are entitled to your opinion but to me she may look a tad off since seeing a woman is facial hair so not common but i must say that she is beautiful. She did not cause her condition and despite that she stands for something beautiful. She is now more comfortable in her own skin than so many men and women around the world are about their body and that in itself is strong , amazing and beautiful.

No man will marry her? Does marriage define a woman? Yes marriage is a beautiful thing when done well, trust me i know. "No man will marry her" I find that statement shallow and quite myopic as that is what seems to be the definition of a woman's achievement to you. (Any way pardon me if i am wrong). Do have a good day.

Bararaq Siqa it can be fixed. I have PCOS and there's medication to treat it. Also, its risky not to treat PCOS because women with this disease have a higher risk of ovarian cancer and infertility. Also, 50 to 70% of women with PCOS have insulin resistance that can lead to full blown diabetes.

  • @awarenessvillage

PCOS cannot always be fixed. The "fixes" come with their own risks and other problems. My 35-year-old stepdaughter was diagnosed when she was 13. Birth control pills made it worse and wasn't an option when she and her husband were trying to have children. (They have two.) The daily hormone shots, done at home, were painful and was hell on her mood. She was either angry or deeply sad, yelling or crying, no consistency and always extreme. That's no way to live!!! My stepdaughter doesn't get much extra hair, but is obese and gets her period only 3 to 4 times a year. You can't judge others by what YOU know. The lesson here is to love yourself.

Yeah, I see this Rockart9 boasting how good the meds were for her, but meds work differently for different people with different things/disorders/chemistry. Sometimes, some people can't even take them at all. Sounds like a self-righteous and prideful prick to me who knows deep down maybe she may be "superior" because the drugs worked for her and she gets to live a "normal, womanly" life while shaming the other person for wanting "martyr" attention. Reminds me that even though people with disorders can be sweet, there are a few rotten ones out there.

Growing up can be very tough and there were many times that I thought about ending the pain for me. But I still have a purpose so I have to stay here at least until I have fulfilled it. I clicked on your video to learn about how you have been able to love yourself. I'm twice your age but I don't know how to love myself. It haunts me as I set myself up for failure all the time. People say it to gain moral superiority. To imply that they don't care about appearance which is obviously impossible (eg. uncanny valley). It's nothing more than an ostensible affectation. I'm pretty sure Harnaam (beard-girl) would prefer ingenuousness over such duplicity. -------- Ultimately, her message is not to judge people hastily based on their appearance. If you befriend her because she looks "gorgeous" or w/e, you haven't learned a thing. The idea is to give people a chance regardless of their looks. So, people who are "NOT gorgeous" are not thrown to the curb. But whatever, I'm wasting my breath because fights between chauvinists and doctrinaires have always been devoid of logic.

Beautiful, I wish Harnaam her best as an activist, we need more people that simply accept that nature doesn't spit out clones that society considers 'perfect'. If only we would accept what we are and who we are rather than become blind machines that need to achieve an image that the media burns into our heads. Through the centuries, preferences have changed. Obese women were once the most attractive, then they become 'ugly' and even a single gram of fat on your body would make you lose this attractiveness. Bearded ladies were once for circuses, yet adored in other societies. Just be who you want to be and live your life, and if someone stares at you for being different stare right back, because the more different you are the more shallow they are, and nothing is as beautiful as an accepting mind. Please keep up your work Harnaam, it's a tough fight, but one worth fighting for more than any war.

But I don't know if she is an amritdhari or not it, it could be style over substance. I can't really tell nor do I want to judge. She actually does look comfortable with herself which is most important

Leroy Spires Turbans are primarily worn by Sikhs. Sikh men and women can wear one. 99% of the people with turbans you'll see are Sikh, not Arab/Muslim.

Nicholas Towns I thought of that too. She mentioned she had alopecia which is hair loss (male pattern baldness), so the turban could be a practical way of covering it while embracing her roots. Also, style points. Not sure which, but either way she's looking good.

V P ugliness is a social construct, and to choose to dislike a video simply because I don't find her attractive is the epitome of small mindedness. This video is not a hot-or-not tally, it's simply sharing someone's journey dealing with rare condition. She is attempting to live confidently as an exemplar for those who don't have an easy time of things. Your attitude is the shit stain everyone has to step over on the road towards further human progress, sir.
