The Ballad of Baker

The long-awaited end to the Baker Mayfield saga in Cleveland has come: He has been traded to the Carolina Panthers for a mere pittance of what he was worth just a season ago. Baker's time in Cleveland was once seen as the beginning of a new era for the Browns, but ended up going haywire.
Today, we take a look as to how that might've been, and perhaps Cleveland (and most of us) are wrong about Baker. Maybe he thrives in Carolina, or maybe I'm just an idiot and he truly is a bum.
Regardless of what you think of him, you can't say the Ballad of Baker isn't a unique one.

Baker Mayfield becoming a sympathetic figure is something I never expected to happen. I firmly hope that he can revive his career in Carolina and make the Browns pay for how they treated him.

I think the only way he starts is if Sam Darnold is injured or Baker beats him out for the starting job. Carolina owes Darnold 19 million to where Baker is just short of 5 million, plus remember they gave a 6th, 2nd, and 4th to get Darnold where Baker only costed a 5th (which becomes a 4th based off playing time). Edit: Also forgot they have XFL Legend PJ Walker and Matt Corral, so who really knows at this point.

I think many people have forgotten that Baker, despite his 2021 struggles, is a legitimate quarterback. The man can play when he's not trotting out with a horrific injury. I really think the Panthers made a great move and the Browns continue to be a miserable pit of sorrow for this (and the Deshaun) move.

We fans talk about him foolishly trying to gut it out, but the reality is that it was completely up to the coaching staff to bench him and the front office to put him on IR. The only reason to proceed as they did is nonsensical: to make him look bad. Any other competent team would've looked at this situation and said, we've got too much invested in this player to risk any further damage, either physical or to his confidence, so shut him down and try again next year. As a Sabres fan, I can attest that that appeared to be the reaction by the organization at the time. In March of 2021, KeyBank Center became the new Factory of Sadness in his opinion. Over a year later, I’d say it’s back to Cleveland because at least the Sabres became a fun watch and have players who are easy to support. They traded Eichel because they were skeptical about playing a guy who wanted a surgery that hadn’t been performed on an NHL player and wasn’t the best influence for the rest of the team. The Browns traded a quarterback who won big games for them for someone that shouldn’t ever play football again if he truly is a sexual predator. In this case, the Sabres are the team worthy of more respect even if the talent is lacking.

If you had led a perpetual dumpster fire to their first real success in two decades, play injured to try and help the team (even though he should've sat imo), and then that team trades heaven and earth for a guy who has significant baggage yet also gets all the money, I would feel some type of way. I hope Matt Rhule doesn't ruin Baker more because I think there's still time for him to become a top 12 QB.

As for Wentz, it's a lot trickier. He's been really inconsistent and he's had some issues with injuries. The Eagles went from wining the Super Bowl tow having two average seasons and then a dumpster fire in 2020. They probably figured a full on reset was the only way they were going to get out of it. It doesn’t matter if you set franchise records or NFL records, if your not one of the games best all it takes is one bad game or season and everyone wants you gone. If we knew that it would be a Hunt situation (8 game suspension) then at least I could gauge the likely result being a Top 10 in '23 and have hope for that season. If Watson doesn't play a down, that'll be 2 _seasons_ of rust. _Maybe_ Watson's elite enough to get past that, but this is a _definitive_ "all-in" push on an underpair or a gut-shot draw. And if it fails, then it's _Haslem_ that needs to go.

There are actually Browns fans saying that Baker's injury didn't affect him (Caugh Caugh Quincy Carrier)! There is a civil war within the community right now, many being on the wrong side. I hope Baker redeems himself and teaches these other toxic Brown's fans a lesson! *We had everything we needed, and we sold our souls to a demon!* For once I'm not only ashamed of the Browns. Born and raised in Cleveland, and been a Browns fan my whole life. I have to say, it's REALLY refreshing to finally hear someone call it like it is. Browns fucked Baker over HARD. I don't blame him one bit for feeling like he was betrayed. Plain and simple, he was. Literally a day before trading for Watson, the front office was in front of reporters saying "Baker's our quarterback." It's bullshit, and it's just further proof that this franchise is a fucking joke and will continue to be a joke as long as Haslam owns the team. At which point, it's a coin flip on whether the successor will be any better. My prediction for the season? Browns will be basically out of contention before Watson even steps on the field, and he probably won't be any good when he does. They'll put the blame on Stefanski and fire him. Then they'll hire yet another forgettable head coach, who will have a built-in excuse for sucking because once again he'll be saddled with a quarterback he didn't choose and salary cap problems due to all the ridiculous guaranteed money going to Watson. It's just another clusterfuck, and another year wasted. And the Browns deserve it. But I'm an idiot, too. Because I'll be watching every fucking snap and giving myself an aneurysm every Sunday. We're all masochists here in Cleveland. At least we had the 2016 Cavs? Shame the formerly-Indians had to go and tarnish that year by inverting the Cavs' achievement and choking a 3-1 series lead. We're not allowed to have nice things here. >_

You definitely nailed every aspect of this, Tree. Mayfield needed to be saved from himself when he tore his labrum in Week 2 last season, but the Browns let him play on. The results spoke for themselves. And for good measure, the Browns screwed Mayfield by taking him he was still their starter before turning around and trading for Watson. Honestly, I hope the Browns fall apart without Mayfield this season. He may not have been a game changing qb, but he helped the Browns become a better team.

I'm in the middle on Baker. He's an average QB. Even his 2020 season when they made the playoffs, he was middle of the pack in the league in terms of yards and TDs. He's definitely an upgrade over Darnold, but who isn't at this point? The funniest thing is the Browns will pay Baker $588k week 1 to play AGAINST them.

In a way, I knew this was going to happen. I wanted Baker put on IR immediately after it was reported what the injury was. Case Keenum was one of the better backups in the league, and I honestly think the Browns have the same record with Keenum as they did with Baker. That’s how bad a torn labrum is. After they did what I knew they would do and panicked for Deshaun Watson, I abandoned them for good. Now I am a simple Lions fan. _gasp_ Imagine only rooting for one team like 99% of fans! Couldn’t be me!

as a browns fan who watched almost every start of baker in NFL i think i'm qualified to say that he is a good QB, just not good enough to take you to the SB. now you couple that with the fact that baker clearly had lost the locker room, and its easy to understand why the browns wanted to part ways with him watson may carry huge baggages, but as far as talent, he's much better than baker

Born and raised Clevelander here. I was a huge fan of Baker in college and loved the way he played. He had a chip on his shoulder mentality that is shared by virtually all native Clevelanders, where you prove to everyone and yourself that you’re better than they think you are. He fit right into our city. I’ll admit that I was incredibly frustrated with his play his second season and last year, but was willing to give him grace bc of bad coaching, injuries, and the fact that I believe that he gave his all to the team and to the city. You could tell that he took pride in that. I completely agree with UT regarding the fact that if Baker simply sat out and healed up right when he got hurt, he’d be the starting QB still. The fact is that the front office felt pressure (both internally and externally) to win NOW (another Cleveland trait) and in doing so alienated a ton of fans by dumping a QB who gave his all to the franchise and signing an actual predator. Personally I plan on openly pulling for Carolina to beat the Browns in Week 1 and I’m finding it hard to support my team right now. I know that I’m not the only Browns fan that feels that way by any means. Good luck Baker!
