David Tepper and the Carolina Panthers: The Rhules of Engagement

Спорт

The Carolina Panthers are a hot mess. Even glancing at them for a few seconds this season can show you that. However, going after a few low blows against an irrelevant and dead franchise is too easy. We have to go deeper (like a few inches deeper): We have to look at new owner David Tepper's reign.
It hasn't been good so far, but a lot of new owners take plenty of missteps. This is a crossroads for the organization. Will he right the ship? Or will he double down on his current way of doing things and continue to keep Carolina in the muck.
This is more a video to look back on in a few years to see if things have changed. Let's hope it does.

I'm reminded of Jon Bois' Chart Party video where he ranks the NFL franchises by volatility (The average differences between the number of wins and losses for each team each season.) The Panthers ranked 1st. I didn't realize as a ten year old in 1996 that picking the Panthers as my favorite NFL team would mean a 25 year roller coaster.

The lack of attendance absolutely IS NOT because the city doesn't care about the Panthers, it's because the city despises David Tepper. I have been a Panther fan my entire life and never have I felt so disconnected from this team. I honestly can't even pinpoint a single positive thing he has done for the franchise since he bought it. Tepper has sucked every single tiny bit of soul out of this franchise almost single-handedly, yet he shows no signs of slowing down on continuing to make awful football decisions. That, along with the fact that he just has this know-it-all, condescending demeanor about him all the time (which absolutely does not fly in the south)....it just makes him incredibly unlikeable. When the owner constantly talks down to the fanbase and tries to obfuscate the truth from the media, something isn't right. The worst part is, the fans can do absolutely nothing about it. Tepper will just move the team to a different market and try to build his empire from the group up before he would sell the Carolina Panthers. It is a perfectly awful situation to be in. I can't even see the light at the end of this tunnel at this point.

Matt Rhule is a great college coach that in no way translated to the NFL. As a Temple alum, our football program was garbage for decades before Rhule took over and he turned us into a perennial bowl contender. Once he left, we won with his recruits until we became garbage again. I really hoped for the best for him in the NFL but it just didn’t work. Which happens for a lot of college guys making the transition. At least he’s not a garbage human being like Bobby Petrino, Urban Meyer, or Chip Kelly.

Throwing all that money at him was insane. Even the all-time great college coaches very rarely pan out well in the pros - just look at Lou Holtz or Nick Saban. It's just a completely different game from the culture to the recruiting/signing to the play on the field to drawing up playbooks and schemes to the politics and money behind the scenes to a billion other things that make each respective sporting ecosystem unique unto itself. Yeah Jerry Richardson was problematic but under him we went to two super bowls. Had some all time great moments. Never had people on the stands chanting to fire the coach. This team just feels so much more different than the one I've watched all my life ever since Tepper took over. It seems all I see him talk about is profits. A common theme with these sports owners is sticking their nose and hands where they don't belong. The successful sports team owners are the owners who stay in the wings, just pay the bills and hire the right people to run the day-to-day operations. In the NBA, for my Bucks, we have Edens and Lasry. When they first bought the team in 2014, they did initially go the meddling route. They made a trade with the Nets to get their coach, Jason Kidd...when Larry Drew was still under contract to coach the Bucks. Fortunately, after the first few years, Lasry and Edens changed their approach. Lasry left the main ownership role to Edens, and Lasry would just help sign the checks in the background. They let team president Peter Feigen run the business side, and GM Jon Horst run the basketball operations. Since 2018, the Bucks have become a dominant contender in the NBA, with a once-a-generation superstar in Giannis signed long-term, a strong supporting cast, and Milwaukee's first major pro sports championship in 50 years. A great example of team owners who don't try to meddle with how the team operates and make the franchise all about them, instead of the team.

I would also posit that team owners' main responsibility, even outside of making the right hires, balancing out a team's finances with its championship aspirations, and knowing when to let someone with more knowledge of their field do their job, is building a welcoming and successful culture and philosophy that everyone in the organization can get behind. It's not a coincidence that horrible teams also often have horrible front offices/corporate cultures; as with any business, any place with employees full of fear, anger, and/or selfishness is not one that can ever operate to the best of its ability--a boss' tendencies and philosophies is ALWAYS reflected in their underlings sooner or later, even more so if they feel they're above accountability. An owner who goes out of their way to NOT allow these things to happen, imo, can go a long way towards transmitting a similar culture to the people in charge of putting the actual team and locker room together--thus improving the team's chances of winning and competing for greater glories on the field.

The owner needs to do like what Tree talked about in Jed York: Take a step back, let your football guys run the team, and take care of the Rock Hill situation, whether that is making amends, or at least settling disputes. He stands as the representative of pro football in Carolina, and needs to set that example of caring for the players, the employees within the franchise and stadium, and the fans that come to the games, watch the games, or live in the communities that the franchise has an effect on.

I was born the same year the Panthers came into being and I have lived in Charlotte all my life. So believe me when I say, we know our team and we love our team. Our pocket skyline decks itself out in blue for every game home or away. They even flash whenever we score a touchdown at home. But this just isn't it. Tepper wants to run it like the Steelers, but that's not who we are. We're a scrappy underdog operation. Even in the 2015 season where we went on a massive win streak we were still undervalued and underestimated. But instead of getting a chip on our shoulder, we thrived on that narrative. A lot of people seem to think it as simple as Bad Team = Empty Stadium. But it just isn't. We've been bad before, but I've never seen this kind of apathy. We used to be the Cardiac Cats. We played every game down to the wire, win or lose. We played in what was probably the most turbulent division in the league and could never quite be counted out. Panthers football was ugly, rough, and in your face. We had big personalities and big hearts. A lot of people seem to think it was just Cam. But that ignores players like Steve Smith, Muhsin Muhammad, Jake Delhome, and of course Sam Mills. Tepper gutted this organization of all that. And worst of all, he doesn't even seem to realize he did that.

We have a great, young team. Lots of really good young pieces on defense - Burns, Horn, Brown, Luvu, Chinn. We’ve drafted really well on that side of the ball. On offense, our line is in great shape. Anchored by Ikem Ekonwu, a fantastic draft pick. Deserves a nomination for OROY. Corbett, Bozeman, Moton and Christensen have gelled really well. We have great weapons like DJ Moore, Foreman and a really promising one in Terrace Marshall. Our trade package for Cmac will be one of the last great packages for a Running Back ever given the replaceability of the position. The Rhule hire fucked us, and we’ve struggled massively with coaching and the QB position. But a new coach over the offseason, and drafting a Qb in the top 5, and we are right back in playoff contention. It’s not that bad. Not at all.

I'm 35 years old, I went to the Panthers first home game at Clemson stadium against the Rams (we lost). I have my ticket still from that home game. I've watched almost (97%+) every game the Panthers have played since they became a team. I lived in the Charlotte area for 25ish years, I've lived in Rock Hill, SC for my last 6 years. I am absolutely and totally apathetic to this team at this point. I have watched one game this year, the first game. This team has absolutely no direction, they said they were going to "rebuild" when they got rid of Cam and then they brought in Teddy Bridgewater, who doesn't suck enough for us to get a high draft pick. Instead of trading McCaffery they signed him to a massive contract. They have been trying to take short-cuts to achieve something when the team clearly sucks. That is the problem on the field, off the field Tepper is just another slimy, disgusting, billionaire. So yes, I was a passionate fan for 25ish years, now I don't care. Tepper has ruined the football team that I have cheered for my entire life. He has built a disgrace in Rock Hill, he is a horrendous, faithless, directionless, leader. This team sucks and I honestly doubt, with Tepper in charge, this team will stop sucking, for the next 10 years. Honestly, I'm just sad.

The thing about Tepper is that it appears night and day with how he has treated the assets of Tepper Sports and Entertainment (Panthers Parent Company). On one side, he has hired one of the worst NFL coaches in the past decade, been at hand of the dumpster fire that is the QB position, and has single handedly turned Rock Hill into Falcons/Saints fans. However he has handled Charlotte FC totally polar opposite compared to the panthers, he has spent big on players, he had done a $50M renovation of BOA solely for the purpose of locker rooms, a field level club apart of the locker room tunnel, and is now gotten done a practice facility. As a fan of both, it's really frustrating to see he is doing so much for one side and not the other, it makes me personally think at times he values the MLS team over the NFL.
