I'm a lifelong (55 years old) Browns fan - or I was until I saw how they treated him. Baker made watching the Browns fun again instead of agonizing. When he was injured Stehanski said that the brace is effecting his accuracy yet not only did he not pull him from the games, he actually had him throwing 60 times in a game despite having Nick Chubb on the field as an option. If that's not a set up, I dont know what is. Now my loyalty is to the athletes that I respect and enjoy watching instead of an arbitrary decision to pull for the Browns since I was born in the Cleveland area. And when it comes to the maturity and the narrative that the Browns was leaking, Stehanski's first year he used to praise Baker saying things in the press conferences like "I wish people could see how hard he works and grinds". Then suddenly when the idea that Watson could be obtainable, the narrative changed. The only fault I have with Baker is that his stubbornness to not pull himself from the games after the injury because he made it all too easy for the Browns ownership and coaching staff to make Baker look bad. So thats a long winded way of saying, I'm a Baker fan since he made football fun again for me and I'm pulling for him. I just want to see him ball out and laugh if Watson can't get his crap together.

We all LOVED #6 his love for the game fire grit you name it HEISMAN WINNER and a real people person. After the Browns traded Baker, we all knew he was still a WINNER. I have always been a fan who roots for the Jersey and not the name on the back… I still am a browns fan, but what they did to baker still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I watch the games cynically now, instead of with hope and excitement. My blood doesn’t boil anymore for browns games…. But I still feel that excitement while listening to bucs play by plays with baker behind center. I don’t know quite what it means yet, but it’s different than it’s ever been. That’s the only thing I can say for certain.

@@draimonshepherd1791 that’s not necessarily true ore he would have been a monster at the panthers and had up and down years at Oklahoma. What happened to Baker at the Browns is just poor ownership and management. Then had the same issues with the Panthers. We have seen how good Baker can be when he trusts his OC/HC. The Rams and Tampa are good examples of that and before there was bad blood with the Browns HC. Baker is a completely different person now after eating a piece of humble pie. He is more even keel during post game conferences and interviews and if you haven’t noticed has completely avoided commercials like the Hiesman watch and has been 100 percent focused on football and his charity organization. He is also been spending a lot of time in the weight room with the team and has been extremely difficult to take down in the pocket if you are watching his games.

The Browns did him dirty and then replaced him with a creep. Baker played through that season with the injury because he was still the best they had. But he's been fortunate since he got out of Cleveland. He actually asked the Panthers to let him go so he could find a better situation and they did. Then Sean McVay picked him up and he got to show he could still play for an organization that knows what it's doing, and those games earned him the gig this year in Tampa. I don't think Baker will ever be a superstar in the NFL, but he can be a quality starter. And would the Browns be better if they had just let Baker Mayfield heal and used those first-round picks for something other than a pervert? Of course they would. But they're the Browns. Browns gonna Brown.

Alex Smith was drafted by the 49ers after a season where they ranked as one of the historically worst and talent bereft teams of all times. A shoulder injury due to no protection that required two surgeries to fix, inept head coaches, finally starts playing well with Harbaugh, then is replaced by Harbaugh's shiny new toy Kaepernick. How well did that turn out. In the end Smith went to KC and showed beyond doubt that he was a very solid QB. He was replaced by Mahomes, but then again nearly every QB in the league in pretty much any season would be replaced by Mahomes, so that is not a knock on Smith at all. Let's hope Baker has at least the same level of rejuvenation at a minimum, and even more playoff success. Baker certainly has a better defense with the Bucs than Smith ever had.

I always thought Mayfield just needed a new team and time to be fully 100% to bounce back. It is obvious he can throw and read defences. Its insane how much he was criticized while playing with serious injuries probably being on enough painkillers to put elephants into coma.

Thank you for presenting the true story. It's refreshing to see and hopefully a sign of "good media" for Baker. Collin Cowturd, Shannon Sharpe, Mike Florio, Stephen A Smith and Peter King were instrumental in smearing Baker after: (1) the feud with the hapless and inexcusable Hugh Jackson Jr. The fact that Baker sneered at him was seen as racist when in fact it had to do with the personal animosity that Jackson fostered with Baker. By sneering at Jackson, Baker became a marked man by the media and some leaders in the NFL. (2) the Odell Beckham Jr. incident which was clownish and sophomoric on Beckham's part. All because he wasn't making his stats that would reward him with $1 million if he hit certain benchmarks. He claimed Baker was purposefully ignoring him when he was open. How did he know that? (3) Baker's shoulder injury leading to his subpar performance. (As an OU alum watching Baker since 2015, I believed that he made a strategic mistake in continuing to play injured. Although it wasn't his throwing arm, it was a serious injury. The ramifications of his decision still haunt him today.) Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski decided they could knife Baker in the back after repeating that Baker would be their QB in 2022. That was the theme from the middle of the 2021 season until the very day they ripped off his hide. That is what they told him to his face with no indication they were going in a different direction. At the end of the day, Baker "wasn't their guy." The previous general manager had drafted him. The hand of Paul DePodesta, the VP of Operations, was heavy in deciding Baker's fate. Now their butts are in a sling for $230,000,000 guaranteed to a slacker who has shown little if any moral character since he came on the scene in college. The three of them, Berry, Stefanski and Watson royally deserve each other. Baker Mayfield has had 8 head coaches in 6 years, 5 of which are no longer head coaches in the NFL. He's had 7 offensive coordinators during that time. That's a lot of experience learning different offensive approaches to NFL defenses. It's a lot of experience in seeing what works and what doesn't work. And, because of it, he's shouldered the blame for the lack of success that his teams have had. That ignores that a football team on the field is 22 moving parts that have to gel together to work as a powerful machine. On the plus side, that experience and knowledge of playbooks allows Baker Mayfield to read coverages with the best of them and will continue to give him an advantage as he grows into a system. And that's the catch; the NFL demands instant success. If a QB doesn't deliver that, whether it's because of his own deficiencies or the lack of talent around him, he gets pegged. A good QB like Baker Mayfield gets pegged and smeared at the drop of a hat. He may have been a cocky guy when he came into the league, and he may have been misused by Progressive Insurance, but he can perform on the field when his line can block and his receivers can catch. A decent running game would help as well. An older, wiser and more humble Baker Mayfield has more pluses than minuses ahead of him in the NFL. I just hope the Bucs are stable enough to retain him and pay him; or, that a decent team that is missing that 1 spark plug to get them over the hump will pick him up if he's put back on the market.

@@ironrevenger9386 Certainly, no team has looked unbeatable yet. The only decisive team I've seen so far is Dallas, but that is to be expected because their first four games of the season are against some of the weakest teams in the league (the Pats have been bottom barrel since TB left, no consistency and showing that Bill was clearly not main driver of success there). We'll see in week 5 when Dallas plays the 49ers how good they really are, though with their track record post season games have been a hurdle too high for them. Dallas also has a poor track record with keeping their star players healthy all year as well, so their success rides on them not losing too much to injury (they've already lost Diggs to a season ender). As for the Bucs, I expect them to do well, but this is Baker's first year with their playbook so I do expect turbulence though the team will be more cohesive as the season goes on. I just hope that the Bucs don't throw him under the bus for Trask if things get bumpy.

Mayfield had the best record of any Browns quarterback since Bernie Kosar, led them to their first playoff game in decades, and then to their first playoff win in even a longer time. Then the Browns front office and the coaching staff started badmouthing him, marginalized him, and then cut him. Typical Browns - always... ALWAYS... snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Yes, Mayfield plays with a chip on his shoulder, and comes off as arrogant at times. However, that attitude has served him well. In this case, it's simple. Baker has merited what he has, and where he is, right now. In the words of Herb Brooks, Mayfield has EARNED the opportunities he has right now. And the Browns? They deserve exactly what they have right now - their continued place in the annals of mediocrity.
