The Avatar Time Forgot (Avatar: The Last Airbender Lore)

Ойын-сауық

Did you know there is a LOST Avatar that the world forgot about!? The books Rise of Kyoshi and Shadow of Kyoshi introduced this fascinating character. I highly recommend you check out these books yourself, but in this video I break down the broad strokes of Yun's journey! This is a really cool piece of Avatar lore.
Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra make up my favorite franchise of all time. Oddly enough, I haven't talked about it all that much here on my channel. WELL that's about to change, I'm in the Avatar State and going hard to bring you tons of Avatar and Korra content. This is one of many to come, expect breakdowns on Avatars Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk and Wan coming soon, in addition to tons of other ATLA and LoK videos.

    In fairness, Yun always had a darker and more selfish side to him than he let on. Between his enjoyment of assassination training, admitting he wanted Kyoshi to join him on a dangerous mission for his own ego, and refusing to accept the possibility that Kyoshi might be the real Avatar, pre-glowworm Yun(while still a good person) felt like he was more interested with the feeling of being a righteously good Avatar than actually helping people. Like he didn't demand Tagaka to free all the slaves because it was the right thing to do, but because deep down he enjoyed how the theatrics of helping others and standing up to evil made him feel about himself even if it would lead to more people being harmed. That's why Yun was able to snap the way he did. Deep down he never cared about others as much as he did own image of being the Avatar, and with that stripped away from him he no longer had anything keeping his darkest personality traits in check.

    @@trevordavis6830 I have never read so much bullshit in yt comment before, Yun doesn't have an evil alter ego, I think you don't grasp the consept of character development, Yun pre Father Glowworm had no idea Kyoshi could even be the avatar, the only people who knew of this possibility were Kelsang and Jianzhu and Kyoshi herself, its not until after the Tagaka mission everyone knows, he demanded Tagaka to free the slaves and people all at once before being ambushed/stopped by Tagaka killing Amak, he was signing a treaty with her to free them too. Yun protects Kyoshi when attacked by Father Glowworm and you claim selfish and enjoys the attention? He wants to be a perfect avatar and protect others, which is why he cares so much, he knows Kuruk screwed up before him so he wants the world to become better after that mess, which is why he works so hard, not because he likes the praise and his ego boosts. Yun snapped because everyone he once knew left him, and forgot about him, he was a teenage boy picked up the streets and brought to a home only to have it stripped away, he doesn't intend on harming Kyoshi/Rangi at first, only those who mistreated him, Hei-ran, Jianzhu and Kelsang are all guilty of this. We see even Hei-ran take accountability for her actions against Yun.

    @@TMETIM3 "Yun pre Father Glowworm had no idea Kyoshi could even be the avatar" Yes he did. He was literally told this by everyone around him and heard(if not directly saw) the insane avatar state level feats of earth bending Kyoshi did in order to save him. Even after all of that, Yun refused to even accept the possibility that Kyoshi might be the avatar and lied to her in order to make her feel better. "he demanded Tagaka to free the slaves and people all at once before being ambushed/stopped by Tagaka killing Amak, he was signing a treaty with her to free them too. " During the negotiations, its made explicitly clear to Yun that in order to ensure the hostages' safety they need to compromise with the pirates. Yun ignores this and instead chooses to do the naively good thing of being completely uncompromising and endangering all of the hostages' lives. Had it not been for Kyoshi being the actual avatar, Yun would have straight up gotten most of the hostages killed and even with Kyoshi saving the day many of the hostages remain missing years later due to Yun's refusal to negotiate with them. Now to be clear, I'm not saying Yun was being evil in this situation or that wanting to be uncompromising in your morals is a selfish trait. But given the rest of his actions and characterization in the series, I feel like Yun choose to demand all the hostages be saved less because he genuinely wanted to save them all that badly and more so because he wanted to feel like a hero of legend and this was what he thought true heroes do. "Yun protects Kyoshi when attacked by Father Glowworm and you claim selfish and enjoys the attention?" Yes, and then he immediately lets go of her the second he hears that she's the real avatar instead of himself. To be clear I'm not saying Yun is a immoral pure evil monster, I'm saying that he has a darker side to his character than he lets on and cares more about the feeling of being a hero than actually helping others. Kyoshi is his friend and risking your life to save others is what heroes do hence why Yun tries to save her at first, but the moment he finds out Kyoshi is the real Avatar his self-perception of being a hero is shattered hence why he also shuts down and lets go of her. "Yun snapped because everyone he once knew left him, and forgot about him" That's not what happened at all. He snapped because it turns out he wasn't the Avatar and because the people who he risked his life to help save from the pirates refused to give him something as simple as water even as he was dying of thirst. Yun never felt like he was forgotten by Kyoshi, hell he literally knew Kyoshi thought he was dead and walked away from her after killing Jianzhu without a single word spoken to her. " he doesn't intend on harming Kyoshi/Rangi at first, only those who mistreated him, Hei-ran, Jianzhu and Kelsang are all guilty of this. " Also false. During their final confrontation Yun admits that the number one person he wants revenge on the most is Kyoshi and tells her that he thinks she wronged him the most by stealing his Avatar status away from him. He even tells her that Kyoshi should have just stayed in her place as his hand servant and demands she grovel for his forgiveness.

    @@trevordavis6830 I love your arguments tbh I wont lie, like ive never debated w someone who puts up a general effort. "Yun refused to even accept the possibility that Kyoshi might be the avatar and lied to her in order to make her feel better." Yun himself admits that yes, he did not suspect Kyoshi at all to be the avatar, because of the stuff he was told, by hei-ran, Jianzhu and Kelsang and several other masters, you cant blame him for not thinking a random servant turns out to be the true avatar after he spent 2 years training for his role. Yun was always told by the other masters that he was just a slow learner, and his skills were praised. "its made explicitly clear to Yun that in order to ensure the hostages' safety they need to compromise with the pirates. Yun ignores this and instead chooses to do the naively good thing of being completely uncompromising and endangering all of the hostages' lives." "Yun attended the treaty signing and began proofreading Tagaka's document. However, he spontaneously demanded Tagaka release all her Earth Kingdom captives, in direct defiance of his prearranged discussion with Jianzhu. Surprisingly, the Fifth Nation leader readily agreed, revealing that the whole treaty signing was a ruse to lure Yun away from Yokoya so the Fifth Nation can invade and take the carpenters and timber needed to expand their fleet. Suddenly, Tagaka killed Amak, having seen through his disguise," (Avatar Wiki) either way, Tagaka clearly used this as a distraction to kidnap Yun, either way I can tell you mean that Yun refuse to negotiate, and that his actions were just to be a legend, I would like you to see that Yun´s character in the rise of Kyoshi is completely different compared to the shadow of kyoshi, Yun wants to be a legend and make a difference because of avatar Kuruk´s neglaction of the mortal problems, I cant remember the exact quote but he also says he wants to be an unbiased avatar for the nations. Yun is a good guy, and he has a good heart for people. "He snapped because it turns out he wasn't the Avatar and because the people who he risked his life to help save from the pirates refused to give him something as simple as water even as he was dying of thirst. " the water thing doesn't happen before after his shadow arc has begun, though I agree it could contribute to him eventually snapping, but I don't think it plays a too big role. your right about him snapping because he wasnt the avatar, but the pages also imply its because Yun´s identity is stolen away from him. "he wasnt, end of sentence, he was nothing" (Prolonge, p 7, tsok) this line does imply that he feels as if he's nothing because everything he once knew had turned their backs on him, his masters, friends, everyone, and all the he spent on being àn avatar` had gone down the bin. "During their final confrontation Yun admits that the number one person he wants revenge on the most is Kyoshi and tells her that he thinks she wronged him the most by stealing his Avatar status away from him. He even tells her that Kyoshi should have just stayed in her place as his hand servant and demands she grovel for his forgiveness." False, this is sorta funny bc I reread this part and Yun quotes that he doesn't want to hurt Kyoshi and Rangi at all because theyre the most innocent in this whole ordeal, he doesn't say that kyoshi should've stayed in her place as his servant but Kyoshi apologises for taking his avatar hood away, and then lures and kills him, so this whole argument isn't really valid.

    Yun and Azula had several in common. They're both extremely talented and have the raw power, have the brains and wits, and not to mention, they have the looks. Their ambitions, however, both drove them to their fall, but those ambitions were molded not by them, but by the people around them that made them think that way. From another perspective of seeing the story, they're not villains. They're just victims too of the real villains in the story.

The reason why Hama never did something like that in character is because she wasn't very creative with it, and was obsessed with controlling others after losing everything and spending so much time being imprisoned. Even though she could've bended blood out of people the same way she bended water out of trees. Out of character explanation is the fact that AtlA is a family show and such things wouldn't be appropriate because of this restriction.

We're not sure of Rangi's entire history with Kyoshi but IMHO the two if not officially got married were together for at least Rangi's life span which yeah wasn't Kyoshi's as Kyoshi is the longest living Avatar we know of living 230 years. The books reveal she learned this super long age technique from an assassin named Lao Ge but I don't think it's one she was able to pass on to others but yeah I think even in the Avatar verse you still only live at best up to the 130-140s regularly. As Bumi was like 112 and that was a very rare exception.

  • @toothclaw6985
    @toothclaw69852 ай бұрын

    This guy is now my favorite Avatar villain, and frankly a really neat villain in general. The thing is, his reasons for bloodlust and anger are *almost* completely understandable. Yun was put through cruel, grueling training by Jianzhu, Hei-Ran, and Amak, all because the first of these (and Kelsang) made the stupid mistake of declaring him to be the Avatar (not without reason, mind you, but it was still a massive blunder without a doubt). And the second Jianzhu learns he's NOT the Avatar...he leaves him for dead, which was a bad move even purely from a practical perspective (to say nothing about how absolutely evil that was on Jianzhu's part). Where Yun actually goes wrong is that he hurts or kills people who had nothing to do with his suffering. At the *very most* he deserved to kill two specific people (Jianzhu and MAYBE Hei-Ran), and at the very least just one of those (Jianzhu).
