It looks like Monson put it on pretty fast and when Marcio had triangled his legs (which tends to lock you in a bit). Hard to tell though. I can tell I got can openered super hard back like 2008 and stubbornly didn't open my legs or tap. My neck was jacked up for at least a year. Granted I was only a blue belt back then, but I can tell you in a comp it generally feels like something you don't want to open your guard for.

@@connorbailey1832 Yeah. That is a great observation. I've done it in the past, but have pretty short legs so don't do it often. I think the primary reason people do it is for increased control and it is also more uncomfortable for the person in your guard. I only ever did it if I was with someone really squirrely or explosive. As you say though, it eliminates mobility and angles on your part. I guess it is just a trade off between control and mobility. In this case, obviously the wrong choice since I think it was a factor.

Not the most common thing to make neck cranks illegal for no gi (common enough in gi competition though), but if he did say that in the rules meeting, I don't really see the problem with it. As far as Relson favoring Brazilians, he had tons of American students in these competitions (that always did well). If he cheated all of the Americans, his team would have gotten smoked, and they did not.

If the technique used was legal, yes. The argument is that it wasn't. I actually competed in this tournament the year after this, but I didn't do no-gi. Can-openers were definitely not allowed in the gi, but no-gi tournaments often allowed it. The problem with arguing the rules with Relson Gracie is he knows the rules to his own tournament. When he said pull up the tape of the rules meeting, I'm betting it's because he knows he said no can-openers. Idk.

Me too. I love any submission or technique that creates the need for new rules in competition. Because there is only one rule in self defense, win, and the illegal techniques are often very effective ways to win a real fight. Really? You're gonna body triangle me from closed guard while flat on your back? Sure I'll take the win. Much appreciated. The closed guard game is cool and good to have for sport, but the old school "always closed guard" mentality is deeply flawed for self defense. I know those are like fighting words to some of you gi game cultists, but it's true. Potentially useful, but very risky. Open guard game is kinda where it's at if you end up needing the guard at all. More sweeps, submissions, ability to engage or disengage, advance position, etc. That's not to say you can't utilize close guard to move with your opponent, or move them, but don't get stuck or caught. My favorite is when you push their closed guard down, they stay committed, throw your feet over theirs behind you and drive their knees to the floor. Takes some athleticism but good stuff when you see their eyeballs open wider than they should from surprise.

@@nickmacaluso6585 I understand where you're coming from but let me explain why you are wrong. You compete under certain rules. You can get an advantage by not flowing the rules. I'm this case it was by using moves that you agreed not to use and your opponent did not use. You don't see any difference but look at it like this. If you agree to a boxing match with me and I knock you the fuck out with a round kick to the face. A knock out is a knock out right?? No, because it was a "boxing match" and licks were not allowed. You followed th rules of boxing and I cheated by using an illegal move.

Thank you for the video. I appreciate seeing it in its entirety. I think the issue is that the rule was too ambiguous . If you can initiate a hold to break guard , but the bottom grappler chooses to tap out, that basically nullifies ever using the hold.

Three times? God damn. I had it happen once and I've never heard of anyone else having that problem. First submission I ever got in a tourny was a rnc that was apparently on the chin. The dude I tapped didn't have an issue with it, he just shrugged and was like "nice squeeze", but his coach protested which left me a bit confused since I didn't know what the problem was. One of my coaches explained to me that it wasn't under his chin and obviously I was like ".....so?" Then HIS coach literally pointed his finger like two inches from my face and said "IT WAS ON THE CHIN!" and I was like "well I guess he shouldn't have tapped?" which seemed to diffuse the situation. In any case I wouldn't say it's "standard" behavior. These types of things get highlighted and end up getting a bunch of attention but it's far from the norm IMO

It has two guys on a mat (I think) wearing white gis wrestling and at one point the other guy ends up on his belly and the dominant one does some kind of a Boston crab type of crank on him, on his back, it looks bad and the guy laying prone lets out a blood curling scream of agony and then the video cuts off I think.
