I was at this game, closest thing to a riot I've ever been in. People were throwing literally anything they could get their hands on. The funniest thing about it to me was how one instigator can basically incite a riot. If you watch the whole video one bottle hits . . . then there's like a 3 or 4 second delay and all the rest come raining down and pandemonium ensues lol

I don't officiating is markedly worse or better. Replay and camera angles are better, and fans are less forgiving of mistakes, expecting nothing less than perfection as if they themselves have never made a bad judgement call in their entire lives.

I was at that game, it was my 10th birthday and I just started to get into football. when people started throwing beer bottles at the field, I didn't know what was going. All I remember was that me, my dad and my brother left and headed towards the parking lot. Long story short, I moved to California a few months later and I didn't watch football until I was 15, as a 49ers fan.

TRUE STORY. THE UMPIRES WANTED TO FORFEIT THE GAME SEVERAL TIMES, BUT BOTH MANAGERS TOLD THEM IF THEY FORFEITED, THE BRAWL WOULD BE WORSE.

The last game at Municipal Stadium ever was a Browns game in December and the fans ripped out everything that they could get their hands on. If it wasn't bolted down....they found a way to take it....

I was there. Can you imagine instead of spiking the ball the Browns had scored a touchdown on the play that “didn’t count?”

The rules office should have told the referees to go back out there, reset the clock, and finish the game with the Browns having the ball since league rules say once another play has started you can't change the call. The crowd would have settled down and they could have finished the game.

I remember that game, but honestly in Cleveland Browns expansion team history this isn't even to 10, in 1999 against the same team Orlando Brown took a flag to the eye from a ref, left the game for a few plays, then came back and shoved the ref who threw it. he was suspended but it was lifted once the NFL learned he was injured so badly that he missed 3 seasons from losing vision in the eye that was hit.

Every official involved in this game should have been fired immediately after the game.

You're absolutely right. I was at that game. After this one, they started selling the bottles with no caps, since they believed it to be less dangerous than being able to throw full beers. Not long after, however, they stopped selling bottles altogether. In Cleveland at least...

I was 42 when this happened. It reminded me of a incident that happened in my own town on October 25th 1976. A combination of record cold air, sports rivalries, alcohol and idiots set off a riot. My best friend bought us tickets to the next weeks’ game, at Lambeau Field, where the Packers were hosting the Browns. Sitting in The Stadium View Bar & Grill, before the game, watching clips of this on one of the pregame shows, an idea for a sign struck me. I had one of the bartenders fetch me a big piece of a cardboard box, and a roll of bailing wire, that he just happened to have under the bar, along with a big black magic marker. I wired an empty plastic 16 ounce Miller Lite bottle to the cardboard, with the caption: “NOT FOR SALE TO MINORS”, - (Or Browns Fans!). I may have gotten on TV, not sure, but every Packer fan that saw it, laughed hysterically, while every Browns fan just groaned and rolled their heads.

I'm surprised the 2019 refs haven't had this happen to them.

Attendance for Jaguars games didn’t begin to drop below 65k until 2009 right after the housing crisis crash. We’ve been trying to rebuild our fanbase since that year, but you can’t do that with constant losing season. Ironically, if people keep lording things like “I hope their fans lose the team” and they finally find a way to start winning again like they did in the late 90’s, this sort of thing may repeat itself as Jags fans will likely be very inhospitable towards anyone not from Jax. I was at this game when I was 10, it's crazy the false memories that happen over the years, I had thought the game was so emotional because while this game was happening it was something like the team that was last place in the wild card had lost and the browns winning would have put them in that last wild card spot But no, looking it up, looking at schedules, it seems what happened was the browns were 6-4, fans were probably excited for the team looking good, then lost 2 in a row, so losing to a team they should easily beat in the Jaguars is just frustrating, all the while the teams that were on the border of the wild card had won, so they needed to win this game in order to stay relevant but lost, and this game officially eliminated them from the playoffs

Stuart McPherran I agree. 2001 was a horrible year for America.

Cleveland is like that bottle of water where you dump all kinds of crap in there, just to see what you can create, and this game was certainly a mixture of that.

I was at a baseball game that year at the new Brewers stadium in the bleachers to see the Cubs play. A security guard confiscated a Cubs flag from a fan after Sosa hit a homer. As soon as he took the flag there were about 20 plastic beer bottles in the air most of them on target hitting him LOL. Security teams tried to blame my friends and I cause we had Cubs gear on. We all showed them our beers and were like I'm not throwing an $8 beer LOL. Those bottles were such a bad idea.

"You're only hurting yourselves from throwing bottles onto the field" lol, doesnt look that way from where I'm sitting.

One of the big 5 in why you can’t get a bottle at most events .

Absolutely everyone handled that situation 100% wrong!! That was ridiculous! They never should've reviewed that play that had happened 2-3 plays earlier..that was absolutely stupid of them!? Should've just said "oh well too late they already ran another play" and moved on and should've looked at the play that had just happened!!?

There were several bad calls in this game... that last one was just the last straw.

It’s literally a game. I don’t know how people have so little self-control that they starting throwing bottles on the field at refs over bad calls. It’s just a game, there will be plenty of other games in the future these people needed some anger management classes

Bad call how? It was no catch and the challenge timeout occurred prior to the running of the following play. 100% correct call.

Thats the kind of stuff that ruined football for me growing up. Bad refs, worse calls and just all around idiocy from everyone involved in the NFL besides the athletes.

the biggest problem is adding or shaving inches or more on spotting the ball. they should put chips in the balls and use a gps style system.

I'm not even a Browns fan. In fact, I've been a Steelers fan for over 50 yrs. But, it's so obvious the Browns were robbed of a playoff spot. It would have been their first time in the playoffs. There was no excuse for what the officials did. None!

I watch this video like 10,000 times KTO has the best videos!

I was at this game and still have my ticket.

The refs ended the game. But league commissioner Paul Tagliabue called and told the refs to get the teams back on the field to finish the game. The refs were the ones who made the incorrect decision to review the 4th down play, but Tagliabue is the guy who forced them to play it out long after everyone left the field.

People are over-exaggerating the bottles, they were plastic not glass. You could get it with a full one and barely feel it at that distance. The cap would do more damage.

THEY WERE PLASTIC!!!!! I had one of these bottles, sitting on my desk, as a conversation piece. When someone would ask about it, I'd say Bottlegate. But it's plastic! EXACTLY!!!! The batteries taken out of radios were the things hurting people, not the PLASTC bottles.

I live in Cleveland, I attended this game, it was an ugly scene, I also had my young son with me, I remember shielding him from the shower of beer bottles. There is no doubt the fan’s overreacted, the mood in the crowd though was that they had been openly cheated out of a victory on national TV, which is absolutely true, the referees should have been held more accountable for their actions (not sure if they ever were). I believe in this day and age I would hope the NFL would pony up some of those billions of dollars they bring in to assure it never happens again, that was the last NFL game I went to and probably my last ever.

If anyone needs proof that the NFL does not care about its athletes at all, just point at this game. They made them go back out into a riot to "finish a game". The NBA didn't even do that with the Malice at the Palace

@benny pitt, you have to said that the team in Cleveland was screw for the beginning. To make a team in the time period which they were given was wrong. Look at the last game which the Mayfield was running and beginning his slide. Mayfield was sliding at the end of a 35-yard scramble when he got hit by Whitehead, who was initially penalized before the officials conferred and decided to pick up the flag. No foul, he was a running back then and he is allow to hit in the head. If I was the head coach and got the call from the league office stating that there should have a penalty for the hit, I would have said "Thanks for nothing, my quarterback could have been hurt or worse." Or look at the Oakland game. The Browns could have run the clock on the Hyde run which the officials states he did not make the first down (which he did) in the 4th quarter. There are two wins right there. So the record should be 4-2-1 right now or even 6-1 (Thanks to bad kicking game in the first two games) This team is about to take off.

First of all, i just had my first cup of coffee so ima bout to take the browns to the super bowl anyway!! 😳 go bengals! Second, i think this is when replay was in its infancy of sorts. Still working the bugs out. And third, i thought he was about to say the ravens were in town with the browns having a playoff shot. I guarantee that ssituation there wouldve had fans charging the field.

Why didn't Cleveland refuse to play until they reversed this call? You CAN NOT go two plays back and change a call

The fans did what they had coming.

"Nobody got hurt" "I just saw a guy get in the head by a bottle and he fell down. Split his head wide open"

If the NFL wanted the players and wraps to come back on the field they should have reversed the call. Once a play has been played you can't go back and look at a play before. The referees are lucky they didn't get lynched

It's why the NFL only has an entertainment license and not a sports license. The refs can make "mistakes" without consequence.

I kinda agree with the officials reviewing the play before the spike. The reason is the Spike isn't technically a play. It's a stop clock move.

fun fact, This game is the reason why glass bottles are no longer in NFL stadiums. I watched this game live at my brother's house and I remember him saying that he wasn't surprised this would happen in Cleveland lol
