This was the most intense rivalry in the NBA in the early 2000s. This incident killed in the Pacers franchise for several years, and put a dagger in any chance of them being a dynasty. The Pistons and Pacers hated each other back then. You have to remember, this incident happened just 5 months after the 2003-2004 Eastern Conference Finals when the Pistons eliminated the favored Pacers. The Pacers had won 61 games that season, they were the number 1 overall seed in the playoffs, and many believed they were the favorite to win the NBA title. Ron Artest was playing like a top 3 player in the NBA, they had a deep bench, Jermaine O Neal was a baller, Stephen Jackson was a baller, Jamaal Tinsley was a baller. They were a complete and solid team on both sides of the ball. Fast forward 5 months later. The Pacers were the favorites once again to win the of the Eastern Conference. Jermaine O'Neal was solidifying himself as a MVP candidate. Ron Artest would've easily won Defensive Player of the Year. They already steamrolled out the gate to a solid record, and they took it to the Pistons in this game. Slaughtered them, and the game wasn't even close. Then the Malice at the Palace happens. This incident killed the Pacers season, they fell off a cliff, and they never would be the same again after this. In fact they wouldn't have a winning record until the 2011-12 7 years later. Had this incident not happened, I think the Pacers would've been a dynasty team much like what the Warriors have been. They were that damn good.

Stephen Jackson wasn't a Pacer in 03/04 season. The Pacers got him after the 03/04 season in the summer trade with Hawks, where Al Harrington went the other way.

For those wondering what happened after the fight, here's a summary: -The obvious: the game was called. -Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson, and Jermaine O'Neal were all suspended indefinitely (Artest ended up getting suspended for the rest of the season, Jackson got 30 games, Jermaine O'Neal got 15 games on appeal from a federal arbitrator.) Nine total players, including Reggie Miller and Chauncey Billups got suspended (Miller and Billups got one game each). -Ten people in all faced (five Pacers players, five Pistons fans) were charged with assault and battery. John Green got the most severe sentence (found guilty on one count of assault and battery, he got 30 days in jail, 2 years probation, banned from all Pistons home games for life). -Despite losing Artest for the whole season and Stephen Jackson for nearly half the season (and the Pacers being forced to dress an injured Jeff Foster just so they could meet the minimum eight players in uniform in one game or forfeit), the Pacers made the playoffs at 44-38. That was down from 61-21 a year prior. -The Pacers even "upset" the 3rd seeded Celtics (who won their division with just 45 wins) in the first round. It would be their last playoff series win for seven years. They were knocked out in the next round by... wouldn't you know it... their Malice at the Palace companions, the Pistons... who would end up coming within a game of back-to-back NBA titles.

Hell yes! I tuned into this game right after the fight ended and I was in complete shock with what I was seeing. I stayed up all night watching the highlights of this brawl over and over.

Y’all should do a fast forward series like this to show how trades/big shots affected the shape of the whole league for years to come. It’s literally perfect for this channel too

I was working in a kitchen when one of the servers I talked NBA with came running in yelling, "Pacers and Pistons about to get into it." It was near closing so we all went to the bar area and saw the cup heard round the world just as it landed. Shock, laughter, bewilderment all in one.

it was a late michgan night in a blowout..the only fans left are dunk frat boys with something to prove and instead of riot outside and get into fights with each other on the street they did in on the court that night..nothing ground breaking ..notice how the fans start hitting each other and separate fights break out ..this is Detroit

Yup, I still haven't followed the NBA as closely. I grew up watching Miller and I honestly believe he would have won a ring that year. Still can't stand Artest. He destroyed the Pacers season and the Pacers stood by him...then the very next season he asked for a trade. Just a selfish, thoughtless guy.

He was on therapy, going through his obvious mental and anger management issues, and has said that during his therapy he felt and came to the conclussion that leaving Indiana and having a fresh start somewhere else was necessary for him to get over this. He's said aswel he feels bad about how he left the team and expresed remorse for not being able to compensate his teammates for staying by him. So I guess why Pacers fans could be mad at him but can't really blame the guy for trying to find his internal peace.

@@gdl3467 That's great, he still screwed the team and fans over after they stuck by him. He ruined Miller's last chance and then abandoned the team the very next year after they defended him and stayed with him. I don't know what leaving the Pacers would have to do with him fixing his mental issues. The guy was talented but he bounced around the league for a reason. I think he played for 5-6 teams and twice with the Lakers.

I am right with you on this… you could feel it, Indy was sending a message and smashing the defending Champs in their own house and I can’t help but feel just so bitter that it all started with just Wallace overreacting to a hard foul probably because he was angry with how much the Pacers were embarrassing them that night. Above all just gutted that this all happened in Reggie’s final season in which it clearly looked like it would have been his best opportunity to actually win it all. Something so small, just one moment and it changed the Pacers’ course permanently. So damn sad.

I'll never forget that I literally just got home from work turn the game on and 20 seconds later malice at the palace started! It was like I was destined to see it unfold.

HOW ARE YOU NOT GOING TO PLAY THE WHOLE CLIP?! THAT BUILD UP WAS SO GOOD!

This happened 14 years ago but it's great that the video quality makes it look like it happened in 1974.

Great job at laying out the storyline of this huge event. I was watching this game live and just remember being in shock after watching this happen. The Pacers were a title contender for a couple of years there. But sometimes fate and some bad luck steals away those opportunities. Great video.

That plastic cup snatched a WELL DESERVED ring off of Reggie's finger. Gosh, I hate seeing stuff like this happen to good people. Imagine how awesome it would have been to see Reggie retire with a ring, walking off into the sunset.

people forget this but ron artest was their best player..he was the reigning dpoy and a minny kawhi leonard for his era and a better Draymond Green with his versatility and intimidation and just effect on the defensive end and ability to playmake dribble shoot and run the floor at sf or pf...losing him was a death sentence...o'neal tinsley miller jackson foster jones jones pollard davis gill johnson were all built around him and his skills..that team would of been nice had bender and harrison stayed healthy without artest but oh well ..artest and jackson ironically both helped teams win titles as starters main 4 scorers before and after this so...

Justin Lee Ben Wallace wasn’t the DPOY in 2004, it was Artest. Ben Wallace won his 3rd and 4th DPOYs in 2005 and 2006.

That suspension to Artest is the biggest reason why Detroit returned to the finals. Unrelated note, Josh Jackson of the suns recently claimed to have been in attendance for this game.

What I find odd is that in a college football game the next afternoon, South Carolina and Clemson had a massive brawl at the latter's stadium on Jefferson-Pilot Sports. Both programs punished their teams by not accepting bowl bids after the game despite both teams being bowl-eligible. I hate that Lou Holtz left South Carolina on that note.

I was 10 years old when this happened. Huge piston fan. From the metro Detroit area. Craziest night of basketball I had ever seen. Still can vividly remember the moments before even the hard foul. Crazy memories. So happy you did this one

You have a link to a clip on KZread of it, because you're talking to a 40 year old hoops head who was obsessed with the NBA at this time & I have no recollection of any outstanding Ben Wallace perimeter defensive plays... Also, I don't think you understand what basketball talent means. It means shoot, pass, dribble. Ben Wallace had none of those skills. Therefore, my point stands. His ass would not be on the court in today's NBA, just like Kenneth Faried. When Faried's contract runs out, they'll run him out the league totally. He'll wind up playing in China or maybe somewhere in Europe, but even there they may not have use for his skill set.

@@LaPride247 You think the comparison to Kenneth Faried is unfair? You realize Kenneth Faried is only still on an NBA roster because of his contract? He plays 5.6 mpg. Fwiw, Faried & Ben Wallace's rebounds per 36 min are nearly identical. Faried 11.9 Ben Wallace 11.8. Wallace played the majority of his career in an era where you could push, shove, and pin down offensive opponents with far more freedom than players have today. Wallace won 2 of his 4 DPOY's prior to the hand-checking rule was introduced. And anybody who watched basketball in the mid 2000s knows the game is called tighter than it is today. You didn't have bullshit calls like the way James Harden gets a hall pass to the FT line 20 times a game like today. They let the players play back then & Ben Wallace benefited from it. Also, I said almost zero basketball talent i.e. shoot, pass, dribble. He could do none of those things at a professional level. He would not make an NBA roster in today's NBA.

I remember before this happened. I saw an ad promoting that game. It is an animated ad, Chauncey Billups was smashing a wall using a hammer. And then the next day, I saw in the news that the malice happened.

i love this series. it’s like experiencing these events as a sports fanatic for the first time

It was basically after this season that they changed the rules on hand checks, leading to the present era of free movement and sharpshooters. The final score of that game with the Tayshaun Prince block? 72-67. Detroit had 19 blocks, Indiana 7.

It's crazy because had this brawl not happened it would've changed the course of history. Detroit would've never won that series against Indiana with a full squad without that suspension and Reggie Miller would've gotten his first ring. As I believe with my Lakers being a mess going into the NBA finals that indiana would've beaten the Lakers.

As a Pacers fan, it breaks my heart to think of what could have been for that seasons Pacer team. I will go to my grave believing that if this had never happened, the Pacers would have won them a ring that year. And it's just sad for me to remember this.

I'm a Pacer fan and this still hurts to watch.

I still remember being at that game for my ninth birthday. My dad and I were sitting opposite side of the stadium, first row of the upper deck. Being a little kid at the time, I called home to mom and left the craziest voicemail that we still have to this day on the dusty voicemail box.

My all-time favorite line regarding all of this, Stephen Jackson said that after they were in the locker room, Artest said, "do you think we will get suspended for this?"

That "Cup" changed the the NBA as we know it... Teams like the Golden State Warriors wouldn't even been Champions if the Refs still allowed Hard Fouls like back in the Day. And the Grit and Grind Grizzlies might have one a couple. That's how much impact that one damn Cup influenced the NBA. I wonder if the one that threw that Cup knows what he did.

This is a really good video, as per usual. I liked the tone of it. The rest of the rewinder videos are about some incredible, happy moment for one of the two teams...this wasn't that, and you treated it that way. Good job.

Honestly this was one of the best things for the league. The fans have been incredibly well behaved ever since. They're starting to get a little unruly again but sometimes stuff like this is what happens to remind them they're not invincible, and can't just do or say whatever they want to these players without consequences. I guarantee you another drink is never thrown in an nba arena

I'm an Indiana resident and Pacers fan as well, and this still haunts me. Can't say I was pleased with B. Wallace getting a 6-game suspension for shoving Artest in the face, which really kicked this mess off, versus Artest receiving the harshest suspension in NBA history after it escalated beyond control. I knew Artest was going to get hammered because it involved a fan, but it didn't exactly seem even. Besides a hard foul, which was called, he didn't put his hands on anyone until after he had been shoved across the court then get a beer in the face while he was trying to cool off. I think Vernon Maxwell got 10 games and a $20K fine for going into the stands and punching a fan. Artest got 86 games and forfeited over $5 million. I'm well aware this was different than the Maxwell incident because multiple players were fighting with fans, but it was also the case that fans were physically attacking the team. It was just a mess all around.

Javian Johnson I think that’s more the result of various terrorist attacks and fan on fan violence rather than this fight. None of the additional security would stop someone from throwing their stadium-bought drink at a player.

The malice at the palace was awesome. Couldn't script it any better. Oneal's punch was heard round the world. Every fan got their money's worth that day I'll yell you. .
