The Anti-2018 Smartphone Review | Pocketnow

Ғылым және технология

The Sony Xperia XZ2 is honestly a phone I didn't really care much about during our hands-on at MWC. The design and its features just felt iterative at a time when smartphone trends are going in the opposite direction,.. The thing is, once I actually decided to use one, a lot of my opinion changed.. Though notice, I said a lot, not all. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow, and stick around for our full review to learn why.

The thing about Sony phones, having owned 3 and 2 iPhones (office phone), is that they grow on you. Whilst Samsung or iPhones have more wow factor to begin with, Sony phones on the long run work better for me. The software is so fluid and simple and stable. Also, Sony is really good at updating the software, my z5 compact is running oreo but my S7 edge is still in 7.0. That for me is important.

Idont care bout the headphone jack, as most new phones diss this for usb-c anyways and bluetooth is always an option. But ZX2 is reporting to had display problems, which isnt very attractive on such premium device. Glad igot the HTC U12+. And NO, igot zero issues with the buttons on it. You shouldent listen to everything you hear on youtube. So yeah maby u got zero issues with display on your ZX2 as well. Lets hope it stays that way in that case, coz a bad display is way worse than slow buttons. But again, idont have any problems with them. KZreadrs are most likely hired to put bad shit on each others competition!

They just released a new midrange phone this week that looks better than their flagship. I think it was the XA2 plus or something. It has a headphone jack so maybe they had a change of heart. Don't know till the next flagship.

What some reviewers fail to capture is the essence and tradition of a phone or brand. Pockenow is checking all the boxes of a good review, speaking of all the pros and cons of this phone, bit doesn't speak of the feeling of owning a sony phone. It's one of the few brands on the market right now that can deliver a solid phone able to serve its owner for years to come, in style, without blending in. It's a special feeling of owning a Sony phone, the only ones that i can compare them with are Nokia. But what really bothers me is the affirmation that this phone is expensive. Well it's ok to shell out 1000$ for an iphone or a samsung, but it's not ok to spend 700$ for the best sony has to offer? You are not only buying into great hardware, but also great software support for the years to come, tradition and the opportunity of being unique. I am by no means a "sony fan boy", but there is more of a smartphone than just specs, and Sony is one of the very few on the market thay still have what the french call "je ne sais quoi"!

I think the larger issue may be that this year's offering is much more expensive for marginal improvements (the battery life having none at all due to having a hungrier processor). The XZ Premium can be bought around 300-350$ on eBay or ~500$ on Amazon, offering about 80-90% of the function in a much slimmer (dare I say elegant) form. If owning a top-of-the-line Sony phone comes at a premium above most other flagships, it should try to push limits and amend past weaknesses. I don't see either happening, and I'll again probably buy their products secondhand / used because of this inability to improve.

I'm a Sony fanboy. But having used a galaxy S8 for some time before getting my hands on the XZ2, I can surely say that it lacks features and is uncomfortable than the S8 in many ways having said that the S8 was released much earlier and has a similar price. Of course Sony phones have their own character, color and many good things the company offers. To be honest, I'm one of the less reasonable consumers who buys a certain brand just because I like the brand. But, Sony has to step up a little.

It doesnt come at a premium ABOVE other flagships, as most other flagships are either just as expensive or even more expensive than this. S9> 720$ U12: 700$, Mate 10 Pro 800$, G7: 750$, iPhone 8 700$. It is just as stupidly expensive as those, even tho after 2 years you can basically throw them out, meanwhie you can still very well use an 800$ laptop. Mid rangers cost half or 1/3 of the price and most of the time offer 90% of the stuff the previous years flagship brought.

This phone has more or less the same layout as the S9, single camera, 5.7 inch screen (close to 5.8 inch), etc. There is a setting to activate the ability to add an create a folder or add an icon directly on the homescreen, some people even found this funny because it's not activated by default.

This is imo a very decent phone and well, an objective, balanced review. I do agree that at 799$ it's a bit expensive, but it is actually the cheapest SD845 phone in my part of Europe at the equivalent of 558$, the OnePlus 6 and Galaxy S9/Mi Mix 2S at 606 and 628 respectively, after that we go into P20 Pro and U12+ territory. As such, it does seem like a solid offering here. Good job, Jaime!

I wasnt expecting a review of the XZ2 on this channel, but I'm glad that you like the phone as a whole. As Sony fan I do agree with all of the good and bad of the phone, yet as an average user, I dont mind with the caveats. The reason I prefer Sony phone is the user experience rather than the overall offerings it has. I've tried a few other phones but I found Sony to have the best balance in terms of my everyday usage. Still, it'll be sometime before I'll be able to purchase one. But I'll reach it soon

the XZ2 Premium is where its at right now for Sony with the insane cameras it has for what looks to be the best lowlight performance right now (P20 is up there but video it's not even close). I'm currently using a red XZ Premium and it's just been one of the most solid all around phones I've used so far. Xperias tend to get price drops after half a year.

It's good that Sony sticks out and being unique by not following the bezel less design. All smartphones these days are looking a lot like each other but you can definetely tell a Sony apart. I think it's a smart move by Sony because this gives Sony more brand recognition. *Never underestimate Sony!*

  • @chopcookies

alexdiezg dont overestimate sony, they stick out like a soar thumb for all but good reasons. I like this phone but the hpjack is missing, a feature they always marketed with walkman. The camera, though it doesn't concern me, is a hard sell in comparison to other brands with dual or triple sensors. For the initiated its a great camera, but the average dumb customer as well as sales person sees more = better. Sonys reputation in customer support is in the gutter, due to the z series. They skimp on marketing all together. Still no amoled screens, as well as undersized batteries. No super fancy finishes and the compact version with plastic... Fantastic 🤣 All in all sony is on the b-list as a brand and i dont know how they could get out of it here in the western world

I just wish it had a 4000mhA battery, the camera and fingerprint sensor was positioned better like Jaime pointed out, the front facing cam looked grainy to me and finally those huge bezels. If they fixed those flaws I'd definitely switch from Samsung to Sony. One thing I don't understand is why they don't offer this device on T-Mobile. There are so many devices out there that are not offered by the US carriers which sucks.

I own this phone and have some thoughts. I became accustomed to the finger print scanner in probably 48 hours. The software is optimized for battery properly. For me battery life has been a strength of the phone - not a weakness. Reviewer does mention this fact eventually... But hit the phone on the actually capacity of the battery. From experience the capacity doesn't matter if the phone sucks it down too fast. I'm in favor of the hardware driving a 1080p screen. I think it helps performance and probably battery as well. I came from a 1440p Pixel XL and this screen is definitely superior. Sony is fast with Android security updates. If you're a power user you can flash firmware easily. The phone is very open from a software perspective. The UI, for me, is far better than what I've used recently from LG and Samsung. There are even some minor changes to stock android that I prefer which is a rare thing for me to say. There is a focus on cleanliness here that I appreciate. HDR looks gorgeous on this screen. Phone is built like a tank. Curved glass back adds a LOT of rigidity. This thing does not bend. I tried remote play with PS4... It is excellent. If you own a PlayStation 4 this is a great perk. Got this phone in Canada on a good contract for 0 down and 20 a month for 2 years... Which is under 500 dollars. Great price.

Honestly i wish sony would break the mold in a good way, instead we just deal with bezel upon bezel, lack luster specs and really just an all around bad design, in 2014-15 i would have been content owning this phone but today it leaves a lot to be desired in a flagship field

Not to be mean but I think you messed up on the RAM. I checked a few sources and I believe that it only has 4GB of RAM, not 6GB. Although it would be awesome if it had 6GB.

Not sure when people will get this but battery size has nothing to do with a long battery life, but it's more of how optimized the OS is....look at the iPhone plus variants and the iPhone X they get amazing battery life even though they have smaller Battery size compare to lots of android phones...

Sony ruined everything good they had - fingerprint placement, headphone jack, industrial design - and did NOT fix a single of the problems they had for years - no OIS, no RAW support, no AMOLED display, tons of bloatware. I gave Sony plenty of opportunities because their Z3 Compact is one of my favourite phones ever. But they clearly lost the plot now.

DBS I agree for Sony not improve much on the camera and display department, but I think Sony’s EIS is good and stable enough (although it could be better with OIS). Plus they have tons of tech like the 5 axis stabilization to back it up, so no big deal. And I don’t think that many people will use RAW format in real world for phone photos due to its sheer size (although good to have, it’s not mandatory). For AMOLED screen, I think it’s not really a good idea because of Sony is aiming for color accuracy that AMOLED tend to oversaturate things, and AMOLED’s problem of screen burning (I experienced it with my YotaPhone 2 after only 1.5 yrs of usage), its just not good. Also I agree about removing the headphone jack and the fingerprint scanner placing is not a good move.

DBS well. The fingerprint on the back is way more natural, but I also prefer it on the side due to working while the phone is in a table. Headphone jack is sad but is soon to be over on all phones. Bloatware? Easily disabled unlike Samsung. Too much thickness? Hell yes. They seriously need to make the phone thinner at the next generation or give us a bigger battery.

brod56 agree with you... the design is pretty bad, although some people may like it. I think that XZ2's design is like the early design model for Sony's new approach after years of omnibalance, giving the people feedback for improvements, etc. 'cuz the upcoming series will be thinner, even though not much of a slash. I hope they will become better for the next models, fingers cross... We'll see at IFA

Nice review, but i absolutely love my xz2, easily the best phone of 2018, just a shame the camera can be a bit hit n miss, although the best cam Sony have ever made and it is very good but... lack of IOS means images can sometimes come out a blurry, smudgy mess for no reason

A real anti-2018 phone would be a thick chunk of metal and plastic with a removable back, a 6,000mah battery, regular 16:9 1080p screen at 5.2", front facing speakers, front or side mounted fingerprint scanner, a headphone jack, last generation chipsets, and a flagship comparable camera. It would cost much less to make and honestly I'd carry something like that over a 2018 phone any day. Function over form.

  • @alexandercheng9800

While all the new phones that released at the 2nd half of 2018 are about $900+, I really don't find this XZ2 is expensive considering it is using the same CPU and with 6GB of RAM. Also, while many users don't like that notch.. I appreciate SONY stick to the shape of the screen. With a 3180mah battery, yes, it does seem small, but it outlasts many other phone with a bigger battery pack, thus it shows the UI is very fluid and efficient. Regarding the 3.5mm phone jack... while the manufactures are pushing wireless headphones... that left us the consumers have no choice... Style is a personal thing, but I see this phone is very much on the practical side, a solid piece and good for its value.
