Only thing left to explain is where Google Maps gets the public transit data from. I think it's freaking incredible how they know every single bus stop even on small islands like e.g. Malta...

The bit at 4:17 about demographic data is actually shown in Korea's Kakao Maps. You get not only the M/F breakdown in percentage, but also a breakdown of every age group (20s, 30s, etc.) which is a little bit much. But it is a thing.

Google is both my greatest dream and my greatest fear, they know everything about everyone and use it to improve our lives - but like the events of the book Feed, we can't let this data fall into the wrong hands. All we can do is hope that google still sticks to their original slogan, *"Don't be evil."* because they sure as heck knew what they were getting into.

m94h Google knows where a WiFi is located, so if you are connected to one it knows where you are. Also all you sensors in your smartphone can track where you go accurate enough. Than you just need to put the path you took on some kind of starting point and you know where the person is going

Paul Wesley yeah I know, but when I'm not using WiFi... I won't just accept all the conditions they have, I also turn off customized ads and all that stuff... Although I guess that they store it all anyway, and what it makes is only hiding it to the user to make it look as if they aren't storing that data

Up until about a year ago they were still using your GPS to monitor where you were even if you had it turned off... Even now you'll never know for sure if anything you've selected as off is truly off unless you open your phone up and physically remove the hardware, so it's best to either not worry about it too much or go full paranoia and ditch the phone entirely.

  • @Thermalions

You don't need to be connected to the wi-fi, Google only has to detect a wi-fi point for it to know your location (combining with multiple points for better accuracy).

Then again, in the school year that just ended, I watched 3 episodes of Full Metal Alchemist during school after my math EOC on the computer and no one cared, so I turned it up and watched the beach episode of Darling in the FranXX during my health class and no one cared. Mainly because most couldn't see it, and those that did see it were too busy to even bother.

Of course, this is just based on my own anecdotal observations, but it works for me. The ONLY thing that I wish Waze had was the specific lane information that Google Maps uses when you need to make a turn or take a ramp. Spotify integration is a huge plus as well.

I found out one day that you can sign up for something that Google is doing where you can write reviews of the places you visited and provide pictures, all of that stuff so you can help people using Google maps to find these places and read your review. There are, of course, rules you must follow if you sign up. I think one is that you should be active if you sign up or they may take you off of this program. There are benefits too that you can read up on. They aren't too specific about what you can get. I didn't sign up since I can't drive (by my self). I can sign up since I'm 18. Like I've said and will always say, everyone, especially owning any tech which it's hard not too, works for Google and we aren't paid too. About the driving thing, the state I live in, you can drive around 16 I think, and get a license at 18. You don't need a permit but you need your parent in the car. I know this was random but I find it a bit weird. Some places you'll need a permit but not in my town.

What about traffic data - where the Google Maps app on your phone is constantly reporting the speeds you're travelling about, so it can work out where the traffic is...

How does it know about traffic delays/accidents?

Okay, but when it gives you your time estimate is it factoring in driving above the speed limit or does it just use the legal speeds?

The 3D imagery is actually constructed from photos taken from a plane, projected onto a depth map created by software analyzing those photos, but not satellite imagery.
