The Worst Operating System of All Time!

How many Android tablets do you see in the market? There are very few left. iPads sadly dominate this space, and if you wonder why that is, I feel it has a lot to do with Google’s approach. The company decided to launch a completely different version of Android for tablets back in 2011, and, it sucked. I’m Brandon Miniman with Pocketnow, and let’s take a quick look back at five reasons why Android Honeycomb is to blame.

If you want to objectively judge an OS, It's a terrible idea to test it on experimental, niche hardware. I'm not defending Honeycomb, I'm just saying

  • @Pocketnow

Well, it's not a test, and this is not experimental hardware. It was sold to consumers. We bought it.

Pocketnow lmao what do you mean it's not a test? You're testing the OS, therefore it's a test. And yes it's experimental because it was a very new and unproven thing on Android. Extremely niche hardware like this is always going to have the worst software support. If you want to show how bad Honeycomb is, you should have tested it on a normal flagship tablet from the time

You are right. It is not a fair test, but as one who used a honeycomb tablet I agree with them. It's a terrible OS (idk if the worst...)

@Brebgon micing from a distance yields this resonance and slight reverb from the room, and makes the voice sound thinner. Compare to other people even on the same channel who obviously record their voiceover with a separate microphone. They sound like people on the radio. This audio seems to be taken directly from the camera's on-board mic. There's no sign of a lapel mic, which would have improved things a lot even if the voiceover was still recorded at the same time as the on-camera footage. Granted, it's not peaking or distorted or otherwise unpleasant on your ears, but as far as listenable audio quality goes, it's firmly on the low to middling end. Plus it's pretty rare to rely solely on camera audio by tech reviewers, even when this video came out.

    - No, it wasn't the worst os ever not even close. Windows ME/ Vista still remain the worst (Although windows vista wasn't that bad compared to ME) - No, it didn't cause Google to abandon their tablet efforts. Nexus7 was released just 1 year later and it became the most successful tablet google ever made!

  • @HarmonicVector

    @HarmonicVector

    4 жыл бұрын

    - At least Vista ran well on the Dimension E521, with AMD's x64 Athlon X2 processor, and ME wasn't completely garbage. Honeycomb was terrible on pretty much every device that it shipped with, no matter if it was Sony or Samsung. - And yet, the term "Android tablet" is never talked about despite the Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 sold about 4.6 million in it's lifespan. The iPad would already surpass it in less than one quarter.

In my opinion honeycomb UI was much more usable on 10" tablets than ICS because you didn't have to reach top of the screen for notifications and settings and reaching the middle of 10" screen for home, back and multitask keys. Yes it was choppy, yes it couldn't even play FHD videos correctly but it was easier to use, and only real brawback was that rarely any app was made to work well with large screens. If you look at it Windows 10 actually directly copied notifications and settings from honeycomb. I had Acer Iconia A500 and battery life was stellar, it worked well for like a year and when apps started updating to ICS versions everything started slowing down to the level of being unusable. And it's simply not true that Google abandoned tablets after it, both Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 came quite a while after Honeycomb. Tablets didn't really fail it was just that initial hype about them was way overpropotioned. Everyone wanted one but no one knew what to actually do with it other than maybe being home media device.

I loved Honeycomb, I didn't get it on a stupid dualscreen tablet though. It was the first and last time Google attempted to take tablets seriously by having a unique tablet UI instead of the blown up phone UI they went with after.

Ben Imagine if Google made something like "Honeycomb OS" but it's separate from Android and just works on tablets and has it's own store exclusively for tablet apps? I think Google should do that... But sadly, they won't.

this video is, frankly, terribly put together and full of misinformation, even ignoring the ridiculous title. the first one and a half minutes bring up criticisms about the Sony Tablet P, which are completely irrelevant to Honeycomb. Honeycomb's design was actually fairly uniform, featuring that Tron-like colour scheme. you don't have to love it, but it was consistent. you talked about the app drawer being white, but that's a Sony customisation. stock Honeycomb came with a transparent black drawer. many Google apps did in fact take heavy advantage of the space, like KZread, Gmail and Market - all of which actually feature dual-pane interfaces. you talk about Google's own apps looking like blown-up phone apps, while showing a shot of a Browser that looks nothing like the phone version at the time. i can't disagree that Honeycomb was fairly lacking in terms of performance, but "multitasking was terrible"? multitasking, even if primitive compared to what we have today, was far ahead of Android 2.3 or even the iPad at the time. Google also didn't give up on tablets after Honeycomb. if anything, they doubled down - Google didn't make any of their own tablet hardware until the Nexus 7, which shipped with Jelly Bean. in fact, they made five Android tablets after Honeycomb. doesn't really sound like giving up to me. there are also minor quibbles. Project Butter wasn't introduced in 4.2, it was 4.1, for instance. i'll be the first to admit that Honeycomb wasn't the most performant Android version, and that it had its faults. i preferred and still do prefer iOS for tablet experiences. but it was the first version of Android that really paid attention to design. it really does seem like you didn't do any research for this video whatsoever.

was thinking the same thing. Froyo, gingerbread and honeycomb was when android actually started seeing adoption and that was when the tablet market actually started growing with samsung entering the game, prior to that it was just apply. I feel the disappearance of android tablets only happened because google didnt push app developers enough to create apps native to tablets like apple did for iPad.

Honeycomb was googles only version of the android that they were working on that was gonna be a dedicated operating system specifically for tablet form factors for tablets it was not meant for phones and it failed so therefore Google scrapped any future idea or plans of having tablet specific operating system meaning that any dedicated my out just for a tablet so therefore every version of android since then is made to run on both a tablet and phone with no specific features set only in mind no specific API's no specific anything. Of course I'm talking straight up Google android stock android now anything 3rd parties do that's completely different

Android tablet were worse before honeycomb. They used Froyo or Gingerbread and did not have an interface designed for large screens. Honeycomb introduced features such as the Home/Back/Apps button being one-fonger accessible, and the split 2-column menus. I agree that Honeycomb sucked. But it did what it needed to to. It was the first use of a mobile OS on a tablet with an appropriate interface, and sets the design language used in modern Android and iOS tablets.

Any connecting link between two goods will seem uncooked, but one shouldn't forget the major UI changes it brought to Android.. You should've tested 3.0 on Motorola zoom tab

And that’s why Apple blew up and took over the world of consumers. They started out buttery smooth and solid performers. No one wanted to deal with the “slow and laggy” android back then. I personally have owned android during those times and I hated its guts. Got rid of it in a matter of weeks and got me an iPhone that made a world of a difference.

Almost half of this video was spent talking about the hardware. Also, I'm not trying to defend Honeycomb, but if you wanna to talk about your experience with it, you might wanna do that with a more traditional tablet.

Samsung's push to phablets pretty much killed the need for a tablet device in Android, and if you want a tablet screen, go with a 2 in 1 Windows laptop honestly, if you are not in the Apple ecosystem and don't have extreme passion after Apple.

Pixel C is a great tablet. What Google did in 8.1.0 wasn't. If they took care of the OS like they did with 7.1.2 and 8.0.0 then Android tablets wouldn't be all that bad for the masses. Currently watching all KZread videos from my Pixel C.

Well I have no experience with Honeycomb but damn this is BS on so many levels. How can you say that Android tablets are not popular? In Poland Android tablets are the most popular type of tablets! No-one buys an iPad (mainly because it's too expensive) and some people who want PC-like performance buy Windows tablets. I personally owned an Android 5 tablet, considered Android 7 tablet but went with Surface 3 with Windows 10. Why? It's not because Google doesn't care it's because a tablet makes sense if it's not just an overblown phone. Hence the need of a normal operating system that you can do anything in like Windows.

Not exactly true that Google gave up after Honeycomb, both Nexus 7s sold like hotcakes and it was after the Nexus 9/Pixel C they gave up and tried to make Chrome OS this weird fusion

I disagree that they abandoned tablets after honeycombs failure cuz with 4.0 they made the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 Which we're both successful devices in my opinion
