This is a true story. Years ago, I was pulled over by a police officer here in a (at the time) Metro Dade County Intrepid. He pulled me over for disturbing the peace. It was the late 90's, I had a hatchback with 2 JL Audio W0 12's and a Rockford punch 500. Things could get loud! Anyway guy pulls me over we go through the process, suddenly steam just starts bellowing out of his cruiser. He looks over, runs to shut it off, and grabs a fire extinguisher. I'm a mechanic by trade, so I got down and tell him it overheated, no fire I'm pretty certain. Pop the hood look around, and I tell him very common, the coolant pipe under the intake manifold cracked on you. It feeds a bunch of auxiliary hoses for the throttle body, thermostat bypass, and heater core. It is two pipes welded together by a flange. The welds crack at the flange, and the pipe leaks from the crevice. He looked at me and said this car is a fucking nightmare. It was just in for overheating and they replaced the radiator and coolant fans. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 then he told me I could go.

Circie Quisling - That’s debatable. The 9C1 Caprice was every bit as durable, and considerably faster in a straight line (with the 350 V8). The irony is, the CVPI eventually did develop into a good cop car, but not before the Caprice had left production. Pre-1998, nobody really cared for the Vic. The Chevy was the police cruiser of choice, as reflected in GM’s huge market share of the time.

Of the 2000's; Yes. No one had anything else to offer of even consider competing with the P71 CV. The impala from chevy was a joke, don't even have to say anything about Chrysler... This video shows an example of how they fell... Chryslers were the P71 of the 60's-70's. That's why Mopar squad cars from those decades are such legends; featuring their big blocks in the cars for police use. Mopar fell the worse of all. They didn't even have the chevy impala in the 90's. Nothing but crap like in this video, what were they going to release. A dodge neon hahaha. Its a real shame when considering the background of how they were on top at one time... But true: The P71 is a beast!

This is the most LAUGHABLE police interceptor review ever. The police package Intrepids did NOT come with the 2.7L V6, but rather ONLY the 3.5HO V6. The 3.5HO did not suffer from the same engine oil sludging issues that the 2.7 engines did, and when maintained are fantastic engines. The cars also did come with unique equipment from the factory, unlike what you said in your negatively biased opinion. Based on FACTS from my build sheet provided by Chrysler Group LLC, I can attest that the police package comes with as follows :BABP 160 Amp Alternator , BR6P Anti-Lock 4-Wheel Disc HD Brakes , DLBP 2.5 Overall Top Gear Ratio , JLJS After-Run Cooling System, NLBP Special Service Power Connector, NMSP Severe Duty Engine Cooling, SBPP Performance Steering, SDBP Heavy Duty Suspension, and SH8S Delete Rear Stabilizer Bar, as well as non performance extras such as: LDAP Underhood Lamp, CKJ Black Vinyl Floor Covering, CKLP Cargo Compartment Floor Mat, andTBBP Full Size Spare Tire. There is no arguing with facts, most of this equipment was only found on the police package, and all of it is performance oriented. As for my personal opinion, the car is great. It is extremely roomy, it handles superbly for a nearly 4000lb fwd vehicle, it has great power and accelerates quickly, and has an exceptionally high top speed of over 135mph. I have 187k miles hard miles on the original engine and transmission, and it has yet to show any signs of weakness thus far...

  • @Plumcraziness

Totally agreed. Your post mirrors mine almost identically. The 2.7L was a horrid design with its water pump in an oil bath system with the timing chain that was unique to the 2.7L only. So when a water pump or its seal broke, water mixed in with the engines oil and caused oil sludge. The 3.5 and 3.2 had timing belts, so there was no oiling under the timing cover. Essentially, if and when a water pump broke/leaked in a 3.2/3.5L, there was no way for the water to contaminate the engine's oil. Sadly, the 2.7L engine was a terrible design that was flawed right from the drawing board. The fact that two thirds of civilian Intrepids sold came with the sludge/failure-prone 2.7L engine, it unfairly soiled the image of the 3.2L and 3.5L engines that never had these problems at all, and were actually very reliable. Essentially, it was the horrible sludge issues and engine failure rate of the 2.7L that directly damaged the public's opinion of the Intrepid/LH platform and Chrysler's reputation as a whole. Unfortunately (and astoundingly), the 2.7L engine continued to be used in a myriad of Chrysler products all the way through the 2010 model year, which has only served to further kill Chrysler's image and bad reputation of reliability as time wore on. But as you know, the 3.2L and 3.5L were/are great engines that were easily and regularly capable of trouble-free high milage. Unfortunately, the public's opinion of the 3.2/3.5L was unfairly slandered by the horrid 2.7L and people will forever think the 3.2/3.5L was just the same. But we know better, don't we. 😉

Never drove one, but I'm an officer and have been for 23 years. The worst police package I've ever had to live with is the Ford Taurus. A total POS as well, lots of blind spots, crap quality seats, sardine can cramped interior, hard to get in and out of with that stupid low sloping roofline, some of the worst ergonomics I've ever experienced, and a useless back window that you can barely see out of, and other issues. No wonder Ford has ceased production of the car, they got a lot of complaints from depts and the low sales numbers in the civilian market as well. I got mine about 2 years ago. The last years were the best ones, they don't have all those other problems like the earlier ones. It has the 2.7 and it's actually not bad but it was at 220K and I had to change the waterpump when it failed. Funny enough it did overheat badly a few times and made a nice thick milkshake. I changed the pump anyway and ran a few oil changes through it till it was giving me clear oil. Still good after putting on 35K after that. I use it for deliveries.

Oil sludge happens mainly in the 2.7s because the water pump is housed in the engine next to the timing chain. If that water pump goes, your oil is instantly contaminated. 3.5s, the water pump is in the timing cover. If it goes, it will just leak out your timing cover. Other Sludge issues in the 3.5s often happen as a result of poor maintenance. My SXT has 220,000 miles on it. Granted, been through a couple of water pumps already but the engine still runs strong, even with the young kid beating the hell out of it as a daily work car...

For starters, they weigh 400 lbs more due to a beefed up frame design, a steering rack instead of recirculating ball, COP ignition, and Watt's linkage rear suspension. With that said though, if I could retrofit an 92-97 I would because I think the older ones looked WAY cooler with the aerodynamic design.

He got it cheap and did some type of fix for the engine sludge issue(increased the diameter of the oil passages) so the only problem I had was when the internal water pump went out( another cause for sludge). I was looking out for it and caught it before it became a big problem. Drove that car 200+ miles per day for years with no trouble beyond the water pump. I gave it to my son and he drove a few more years after me.

Every problem you listed is related to the 2.7l models. I'm a diehard Mopar fan but I'll be the first to tell you to stay away from a 2.7. The 3.5s are pretty easy to find still running with well over 300k miles on the clock. In fact I know a few guys that have had to start figuring out replacements for oem parts because the cars have outlasted oem parts production. Certain parts like suspension components are hard to find now. My first car though was a 99 2.7 Intrepid and I drove it home and to school for two weeks after the wreck that totaled it. I'd also like to point out that I've driven both an Intrepid and a 2000 Crown Vic and the 500lbs lighter Intrepid handles way better hands down.

Andrew, transmission and suspension issues can be heavily influenced by the driver and vary greatly from car to car as well as the conditions of the roads it was driven on. I've seen an Intrepid go 800,000 miles before the second trans gave out. I've also seen a brand new trans blow after 50,000. As for my experience with rwd cars. I have driven 19 to date. 1984 Chevy Monte Carlo stock car= 350 laps 1989 Ram =approx 1,000 miles 1995 Ford Aerostar= 650 miles 1996 Ram Dually =approx 500 miles 1997 Ram Van= 50,000 2000 Crown Vic= 1,300 miles 2004 Toyota Tacoma= 5,000 miles 2004 Ford Sport Track= 800 miles 2006 Chrysler 300= 150 miles 2009 Chrysler 300= 120 miles 2014 Charger= 35,000 miles 2016 Charger= 6,000 miles 2016 Challenger Scat Pack 392= 30 miles 2016 Chrysler 300C= 30 miles 2016 Ram Eco Diesel= 30 miles 2017 Challenger Scat Pack 345= 30 miles 2017 Charger Daytona 345= 30 miles 2017 Chrysler 300S= 30 miles 2017 Fiat 124 Spyder= 30 miles That enough experience for you Richard?

Richard we're comparing a unibody car with 4 wheel independent suspension that is lighter and shorter than a body on frame car with a solid beam rear axle. It isn't rocket science. Torque steer is easily over come and there's plenty of people that make dedicated fwd track cars that do pretty well. The argument of rwd vs fwd doesn't really work anymore. Besides awd is better than both

Intrepid's with the 3.2L or 3.5L V6 engines were generally fine. Those engines typically only die if you let the timing belt break (interference engines), or just generally neglect them. They are underrated in terms of durability largely because the cheaper models with 2.7's were more popular & became so infamous/synonymous with Dodge Intrepid's. I think one of the biggest issues with the 2.7's were the internal-designed water pumps which typically failed early & let oil/coolant mix (causing sludge) if the pump went bad. Seems like I remember reading that 2.7's need water pumps replaced as "preventive maintenance" to avoid the catastrophic engine damage/failure that they're known for.

One thing that I can say is that I had a dodge intrepid with a 2.7L in it and it was notorious for the water pump going on it and it was designed when the water pump would go it would leak engine coolant into the engine oil causing the oil to sludge up and then you'd get a good size knock in the upper part of the motor. I made sure thatmy next intrepid had the 3.2L and wow what a difference in dependability. I've had the car now for 9 yrs and have had very little problems out of it.

You can keep the 2.7 engine alive, but you have to spend money on oil changes, like every 2500k miles. Engine burns oil too so be ready to add a quart every 600-800 miles. And keep an eye on your coolant level. If it drops suddenly, your water pump is going or gone. Otherwise, the concorde and intrepid are very comofortable, sweet driving cars. They seem to coast with minimal pressure on the gas pedal. You can disconnect the cruise control by mistake on level highway and not notice it for a while.

But it drove like a dream, had good speed, and had no other issues. I drove every widely available model of cruiser from 1987 thru 2016 except for the Diplomat. My Intrepid was better than any of the Crown Victorias I drove (1991 square version; 1996 sleek version; 1999 last model design). They COULD NOT GET OUT OF THEIR OWN WAY. They were fairly durable but cornered like a school bus with similar acceleration. Brakes were a problem as were overheating when at idle. If you had high-mileage, you had to open the hood on hot days if you were on a traffic detail or working a crash, otherwise, they would overheat.

Yep, the 2.7L engine was the problem. Stupidly, the 2.7's water pump was located in an oil bath system under the timing chain cover. So essentially, when the water pump or the seal broke, water would contaminate the oil and sludge up the engine. Unfortunately, TONS of 2.7s failed completely and gave the quite reliable 3.2 and 3.5 engines a bad name, because there were so many issues with the 2.7's design, so people assumed the same of the 3.2 and 3.5 engines. But the 3.2 and 3.5 never had engine sludge and/or failure issues because they had timing belts with no oiling under the timing cover where the water pump was located. If a water pump failed or leaked in a 3.2/3.5, there was no issue, because the water had no way of getting into, and mixing with the engine's oil. Sadly, the 2.7L engine was a terrible design that was flawed right from the drawing board. The fact that two thirds of Intrepids sold came with the sludge/failure-prone 2.7L engine, it unfairly soiled the image of the 3.2L and 3.5L engines that never had these problems and were actually very reliable. Essentially, it was the horrible sludge issues and engine failure rate of the 2.7L that directly damaged the public's opinion of the Intrepid/LH platform and Chrysler's reputation as a whole. Unfortunately (and astoundingly), the 2.7L engine continued to be used in a myriad of Chrysler products all the way through the 2010 model year, which has only served to further kill Chrysler's image and bad reputation of reliability as a whole. But the 3.2 and 3.5 were great engines that were easily capable of trouble-free high milage. As of 2019, I still see lots of used LH cars (Intrepid, 300M, Concorde, LHS) on the market with 200-300k miles on them. The 3.2 and 3.5 were excellent engines. It was the 2.7 that killed the Intrepid's reputation and public perception over time. The same could have been said about the 2005-2010 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger/Magnum series if they hadn't have come with the 3.5L and Hemi engines in addition to the base package 2.7L that was purchased with several of those models. But yeah, long live the 3.2/3.5! 😁

I buy new and run my cars to the ground. My Intrepid did have a leaking water pump replaced at 125k. The biggest issues came after 100k and with factory recall issues that Dodge could never permanently repair such as camshaft sensor and evaporator canister. Other than that, the car always purred, no cheap, rattling looseness in the cab at all. That sxt gave me 15 good years but I finally said NOPE when the break liners corroded. I can see how this car would fail as a police intercepter but as a family car it did well. I have an 2018 Impala Premier now cause I've always been a sucker for large American sedans... and now Chevy will stop making those, lol. Let's see how long I can make keep it purring. I own a private security company and have a handful of ex police cars as company vehicles. I have 2 08 Ford crown Vic interceptors, a 2014 ford explorer police package and I just bought a 2002 intrepid interceptor about 6 months ago. Honestly out of all the cars the intrepid is the most comfortable and roomy. The guy spouting his mom sense is not very well informed. The intrepid interceptor has a VERY beefed up and super stiff suspension system that makes this big ole car handle like a mini Cooper. The thing will out corner any of my other cars and has other upgrades this fella decided to ignore. The car has full external cooling systems for the oil, power steering, the transmission and an oversized radiator. Mine has the "autostick" option and has been relocated at the factory to the column shift. My intrepid will keep up every bit with my p71's Vic's. Also the gas mileage is almost twice the Vic's. I get about 12 in the Vic's and the intrepid gets about 22. My intrepid has 170k now and has been fleet maintained since day one. It did have a transmission replacement about 3000 miles ago but the car runs and drives very well and myself and my other guards like it very much. I've had it checked out at a mechanic prior to purchase and his inspection showed a very clean engine with solid compression and no major issues. The only thing I had to do to it was an O2 sensor replacement which looking thru the huge file of reciepts and records, has had to be replaced about every 2 years or 25k. Not sure why and I assume it is a weak point. I don't think it's fair to bash the intrepid like he does. It's like any other car, it depends on how well you maintain it, keep up on oil changes, use proper fluids and parts and treat it well. The main reason the police quit using them wasn't exactly how this guy says it was. One of the biggest reasons was the fact the car is front drive and has very low ground clearance making the car unable to handle pursuits thru rough terrain and over curbs. Cv axles were exploding if an officer jumped a curb at speed, unlike the tank like front ends of the crown vics. The huge issue and killer was the braking system. They were susceptible to overheating and the seals failed and dumped fluid onto hot rotors causing fires. Now as a civilian there is no way you'd ever hear the brakes up like that so no worry. They also changed the brake materials and used a non flammable brake fluid on most department cars after this discovery. ALL makes and models have issue and weak points. The crown vics, the Caprice, the dodge chargers, and even all the SUV police cars have things you could point out. The intrepid is no different. If you find a well maintained, reasonably priced intrepid interceptor, and you like the way it feels then I say buy it. They're not as bad as this guy makes them out to be.... Almost all of us when we were teens drove pieces of unmaintained shit and beat the crap out of them!

Wow. this "review" is biased and misleading as hell. 😕 Sit tight, folks! This is a long post... 1. The oil sludge issue was with the 2.7L engine ONLY. THE 3.5L AND SMALLER 3.2L NEVER HAD THAT ISSUE. The oil sludge issue in the 2.7L was due to the fact that the water pump was stupidly located under the timing cover in an oil bath system for the timing chain. So, if the seal for the water pump blew (which typically seemed to happen around the 80,000 mile mark), water would get into the engine oil and begin to sludge up the engine. The 3.5L and 3.2L engines were a different design with a timing belt instead of a chain, which eliminated the need for oiling under the timing cover for a timing chain. So, if the water pump seal breaks or if a pump manages to fail on a 3.5L or 3.2L engine, it is literally impossible for water to contaminate the engine's oil. The 3.5L and 3.2L engines were NOT the problem. They never had engine sludge issues AT ALL. 2. THE DODGE INTREPID POLICE PACKAGE WAS ONLY OFFERED WITH THE 3.5L ENGINE! It was NEVER offered with a 3.2L engine OR the sludge-prone 2.7L engine. EVER. Get your facts straight. It's obvious that you're just grouping civilian cars in with the Intrepid police package cars, as well as some random bad experience you had with a friend's Intrepid for the sake of a biased point. 3. What the hell were you doing to replace 3 water pumps in what I can only assume you are implying was a short amount of time??? Were they OEM pumps? Because, if you were installing aftermarket pumps every time, there are a lot of crappy Chinese-made brands in the aftermarket that don't last. You get what you pay for. If you get an OEM pump or a pump made by a reputable aftermarket brand, they last quite a long time. Certainly well beyond the 80,000 suggested miles to replace one before the seal goes on it, or it fails, which would cause the oil sludging in the 2.7L engine. 4. The wiring setup for lights and other accessories was NOT the only heavy duty parts engineered into the package. The Intrepid police package had the following!... - Heavy-duty suspension with heavy-duty sway bars - External engine oil, transmission oil and power steering coolers - Heavy-duty four wheel anti-lock disc brakes - V-rated (149 mph) Goodyear Eagle GT or RS-A tires - 160-amp high-output alternator to handle computers, electronics and lights - 100-amp battery power and ignition feed to instrument panel to support high-tech equipment - 100-amp battery power feed to trunk - 150 mph-calibrated, certified speedometer (the 3.5L police package was tested with a 136 mph top speed by the Michigan State Police in their annual police car roundup in 2003) You can hardly say this was just a civilian Intrepid with "just" wiring for the light bar. Your statement of, "The Dodge Intrepid police interceptor just came with additional wiring to support strobes and flashers in the trunk compartment", is very uninformed and misleading. Again, it seems you are going by a crappy experience with your buddy's Intrepid and slandering, and misrepresenting the Intrepid police package cars without any facts. With that said, I am not defending the Intrepid police package cars. I don't think they were a proper platform for a police car, but to say that they were basically civilian cars with special wiring and that "all V6s" had engine sludge issues is ignorant of facts. It's okay to have an opinion, but at least give your opinion based on facts, instead of feelings, ignorance and confirmation bias.

Intrepid police package from 02-04 was actually a pretty decent car. I never saw a police package one with a 2.7l though. They were quick compared to the competition being a Crown Vic or 3800 v6 Impala. And why would a police department care what happens after they sell them. They get their use out of them in the first 2-4 years of life. Problems, not really any more than the competition. The Impala was blowing through Intakes at the time and the Crown Vics in that year range were eating up transmissions in the 02 and down cars.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the Fiat merger either. It's a shame. However, the 3.6L Pentastar engines are actually really good engines. As are the larger displacement Hemis. I also heard recently that Ram is starting to put highly reliable Aisin-made automatic transmissions into some of their larger trucks as well, which should boost their overall reliability. (Aisin is a brand name of transmission manufacturer that makes transmissions for Toyota and other reliable brands.) Also, they seem to be doing really well with their interior designs and interior quality, so not all is horrible in Chrysler-ville. But that new Chrysler Portal thing looks like an absolute flop of a car. I fear that thing is going to kill Chrysler once it comes out. It's going to flop as hard as the Pontiac Aztec, you watch. 😕 Fiat's leadership can go to hell. It's sad because I have a feeling that Chrysler's engineers could actually do well for themselves under their own direction and guidance, but Fiat seems to be taking them in a pretty shitty direction that I don't like.

Had a brand new 2001 Intrepid with the 2.7, ran full synthetic oil in it from first oil change. Car always ran well, never any issues other than an oil leak that was repaired under warranty. Car was really tremendous on the highway, stuck like glue even going too fast on the exit ramps. Traded it in for a Durango when back problems madw it impossible to get in and out of. I liked that car, easy to drive, and quiet to ride in.

Today's 3.6 V6 Charger Pursuit is faster than both the Clown Dic and any Exploder. The Clown Dic was limited to 129 mph (3.27 rear), and the Exploders are limited to 132 mph (all). The V6 Charger runs 141, and the V8s run 152 mph. With the limiter suspended, the V8 runs 176 mph.

This was the car in drivers education that was ALWAYS broken. If it was functional, it was picked last. I remember riding with one kid for his test and the power steering took a shit. He was really skinny and absolutely couldn't turn the wheel. There was another time I rode with a friend to salt lake. A two hour drive for a night and all his car needed to do was make it so he could be rid of it. The ordeal to two jumps, and the taping of a coolant hose after we overheated. The trip took 5 hours. "Faster than normal..." he said.

Had an 01 RT. 3.5 Magnum engine is good. Car handled well, nice for long trips. Where it fell short was with the wiring, and the brake rotors warped easily and often. Replacement of the timing belt was outrageously costly. The RT was the only decent trim level. The 2.7 engines were horrible.
