Even the "new" ones have to be around 5-10 years old... Im thinking you live in a big city is why you dont see many old ones

Had an assigned Crown Victoria for 4 years before I retired. It ran 24/7 used on all three shifts for 250K miles. They retired it when I retired and I bought it at auction. Kept it for another 150K.

I worked as an EMT back in college (mid '70s) and the EMS I was with was run by the county via a building in town. It had a two vehicle garage and the county had just purchased two new "truck based" ambulances. One GMC and one Ford. The GMC was the cab and bed frame of their 1500 model and the Ford was the cab and bed frame of the F150 and the ambulance box sitting on the bed frames was identical and made by Southern Ambulance Company in LaGrange, Ga. All that to say that all of us who drove the vehicles preferred the GMC over the Ford. The Ford had a stiff suspension but the GMC was softer and perhaps more responsive. And is this Kurt Russell narrating this video? Sounds like a KR narrated Quentin Tarantino movie!

Ford took the lead years ago by designing their police vehicles specifically for police duty with beefier suspensions, electrical systems, engines, ect. Most other manufactures just slapped a police sticker on a stock vehicle. First one I ever drove was a LTD police interceptor with a 460, ran like a scalded dog.

The caprice interceptor wasn't any ordinary impala. That was pretty beefed up but with a 6.2L it was a gas guzzler and the ecoboost still outperformed it

@@JXC98 cant americans comprehend the fact that just because a turbocharged engine is much more efficient, it will outperform N/A engines. also consider the fact that an N/A engine's performance isnt consistent. Temperature, altitude, how long has it been running, how fast its going, these are all factors which the n/a is less consistent. You cant get the same amount of oxygen into the combustion chamber in different altitudes, same with outside temp, where a turbo can supply the same amount of oxygen with moderated temps due to intercooling. Also has more torque way more down than N/A. Police IDLE a lot, actually Diesels would be the best option but in the u.s. they wouldnt let them. a 3.0 diesel would make about 250-300hp easily, with double the miles to the gallon compared to a gas guzzler.

So Ford’s new Taurus was so small, police departments bought Explorers instead. But since SUVs handle poorly, they added additional sway bars and special suspension. Since fuel efficiency is also poor on SUVs, they added hybrid electric tech. Basically, Ford didn’t give police a sedan that was big enough, so now they instead buy SUVs with thousands of dollars of upgrades to make them more like sedans. 🤔

The 06 escape was the only true SUV that handled like a rally car (because the first model was built in collaboration with Mazda, and it sits on a focus platform which is now an awesome rally car) With the stock 4 cylinder, it was a 0-60 in 4 second car all day, which is insane for an SUV thats not turbo) It was because of the gearing of the manual transmission. Id really like to find and restore one. Best car ive ever owned tbh. Felt better than my beamer

The Crown Vic (CVPI, P71) is one of the best cars ever made. Body on frame construction. *Extremely crashworthy.* Able to withstand seemingly endless abuse. I’ve noticed this with the Impalas as well, but the Crown Vic’s body-on-frame construction is, by virtue of its design, a tougher vehicle. It also means that whole sections of the car can be replaced. Super reliable engine. Easy to repair and with simple upgrades you could add some serious horsepower. Also, rear wheel drive! I drove a cab (before switching to Uber) and the cab company had several old CVPIs and I would try and drive them whenever possible, because even as you drive through the city at night, the size of the Crown Victoria just *seems* safer. That, and extra room, everywhere. Back seat? Huge. Trunk? Bigger than all the interior space of many cars. In the city I live in, the police department still have a *lot* of them in operation. Many are now in the “slicktop” configuration. I’ve spoken to a couple local cops who are hanging onto their Crown Vics as long as possible. Many detective and unmarked vehicles are still Crown Vics and the older style Chevrolet Impala 9C1 and 9C3. The newer Impalas are popular too. Seems like most guys don’t like the Taurus, which is why the Explorer quickly replaced it. Former police cars (Crown Victorias and Impalas) are very popular with regular civilian drivers around here. They’re driven hard, but they’re maintained, nobody calls them “Police Interceptor” [even though that’s a badass name for a car]. At least around here, it is, and always will be “Crown Vic”, said with a feeling of affection. My first car was a 1995 Ford Contour GL with the 2.0 liter EcoTec 4-cylinder and MTX-75 5-speed manual transmission. The Contour was considered one of the worst cars Ford made. My dad bought it new in 1995 and drove it for a decade. He then sold it to me for $1 when I was 16 and had just gotten my driver’s license. I drove it for another decade [and 110,000 miles]. At 197,000 miles the odometer stopped working. I went to the junk yard, pulled an instrument panel off another Contour, *added* mileage to that odometer, put me at around 197,500 and then just kept driving. The car just would not die. Only major work done on it was water pump replacement and suspension replacement. That car just kept running. My dad drove it hard and I drove it harder. It went 200,000 miles and 20 years on the original factory clutch, transmission and everything else (except suspension). Finally one of the cylinders lost compression….so it still ran, but ran rough. Lots of blow-by and oil consumption after that point. I sold the car to a local junkyard for $450 and they pretty much immediately swapped the engine out, turned around and sold the car. As far as I know, it’s still on the road today.

15:15 As a resident of Oakland County, Michigan I laughed quite hard at what CNBC had to say about the Tahoe PPV. Oakland County Sheriff's Department _still_ runs Impala PPVs that date back to 2012. Think about that: we're talking decade-old police cars in a time where most municipalities have since decommissioned these types of vehicles! Albeit those Impalas are kept in good shape (except the 3 I've seen on the backs of county tow trucks).

Honestly, the greatest police car of all time was EASILY the Crown Vic. It's the only former police car I'd ever consider buying. It is by far the easiest car I've ever worked on. Everything was spacious and easy to change parts on, it was very modular.

I heard LAPD had a Factory frame straightening machine for FIXING wrecked crown vics, for LAPD. The city wanted to keep the cars running without having to replace them, the car was so good. Look at taxi service, before the hybrid, Toyota for one. Ford's dominant the Taxi industry.

yeah i used to remember they were taxis until the 2000s. and many people i knew owned them. they were so roomy and comfy for long road trips. and the trunk could easily carry 4 check bags and 2 hand luggage.

I hear mixed things about Ford's new fleet ,but I still here about how the Crown Vic is missed . A friend and an officer in MN was tee boned in one of the new Ford's and the side air bag didn't deploy . Her husband is a Chevy guy and is a detective and drives a Chevy SUV type. He didn't want her back on the road unless it was Crown Vic. Unfortunately she didn't return to the road due to a concussion. I really think Ford should come back with a redesigned CV with a full frame . I've heard many surviving serious crashes,my daughter was one in a Marquis. She went off a highway and hit a telephone pole with four friends in the car. Everyone was fine and guess what was the first car on the scene ❓😎

I miss the crown vic, but I really love having the extra cabin space . I also like some of the features added to PIU now and I certainly like the ease of getting out of my cruiser now which is much better than getting out of a crown vic.

No. Crown Vics disappeared from front line service pretty quickly after they were discontinued. Some lasted longer in admin service but they are pretty much all gone too a decade later. No.. the Crown Vic gave the _illusion_ of long service because they were produced almost without modification for 20 years. And they do last long in private hands because the people who own them are typically elderly and don’t drive them very much.

Brett Cooper yeah, she’s barely hanging on, obviously there should be a few in small, rural departments, but if you look up LAPD responding during the riots this year there are huge amounts of CVPIs responding. And also the CHP, are constantly announcing on Instagram that they are retiring the last of their Crown Vics. CHP announced last year that 2020 is the last year the Crown Vic would be in service. Unfortunately the Vic is coming to an end quickly.

Robbins PD in Illinois are mostly old CPD P71s since the only charger and taurus they had ended up out of service for engine trouble. Now they're riding 10 year old crown vics and two new explorers

I ended up getting a 2021 Ford Explorer Limited and my god is it a nice ride. Tons of room and and beast in the snow. Looks sharp as hell too.

@@halfforeignamericana5451 That's a tough question. I got so used to having a backup camera especially for the size of the vehicle it would be hard to not have it. It does have much more exciting stuff like lane centering where it will steer itself which is nice for long trips. I have a short video of it actually. Lots of bells and whistles.

As an engineer that has worked on police vehicles, Ford simply has put more effort into consistently building police vehicles over the last 30 years. For a while they were the only game in town with the Crown Vic. That bought some loyalty, but also they have put more resources towards it. Police cars are not cash cows. They are small margin vehicles. They are sold in bulk at low prices and require a lot of development and special equipment. Often carmakers will see them as more of a headache than they are worth. Then start making them again when they get desperate for sales. Yet Ford has been fairly consistent in providing interceptors vs. GM and Chrysler. The latter two have been better the last 15 years or so, but Ford definitely has been more dedicated overall. The Explorer also is fairly right sized and right priced vs. the competition.

Up here where I live Good Year tires are the chosen tire brand for police, ambulance and fire dept. Good Year dominates the tire market for emergency vehicles. Most metro buses and school buses have Good Year tires on them.

"2-3 years in service" in my state you still see crown vics and old gen chargers.

Im a retired police officer. I served from 1976 to 2003. I started with the chevy nova. But the crown vic is by far the best police car ever made. I was in 155 hi speed pursuits in my 25 yr career. The crown vic never letme down. But the new ford explorer is the cats meow. For pure putsuit give me a hemi Dodge. I was in 6 shootouts also. The 10mm is the most effective gun. Next the 45 then the 40. I was stuck with a 9mm but it too served me pretty good.

The 10mm has a longer case it shoots a 180gr bullet @ 1350fps, for about 750 foot pounds of energy. The 40 s&w was a mistaken belief by the fbi that it too powerful for female agents. The 40 shoots the same 180gr bullet at 980fps. The 10mm hits with TWICE the power of a 9mm. The 9mm has so many failures to stop on the books documented. While the 40 is way better than a 9mm its not as good as the original 10mm which is perfect. I rate the auto pistol.rounds as #1 10mm, #2 45 super or +p, #3 40 s&w, #4 9mm +p+. I was a police officer for 24 yrs i was forced by regulation to carry a nine, the 9 will work with the hottest ammo available. I killed 2 felons with it, but its stopping power that we want. The 40 will fit in.a 9mm size frame. The 10mm fits in a 45 size frame. Modern 10mm guns like the Smith , Sig, and glock hold 16rounds only 1 or 2 less than a full size 9mm

I had just purchased a 2018 Ford Explorer police utility interceptor which is what drew me to this video. I did my homework & found these vehicles to been well maintained & being a fleet type vehicle, parts acquisition should never be a problem. I also like the "less is more" mind set in its construction. Kind of like the Roadrunner/Super Bees of the 60's & the Chevy Work Truck of the 90's. I don't need or want heated mirrors or steering wheel!! I just want a plain vehicle that will get me from point A to point B without a lot of gadgets. These police vehicles check all of the criteria! Heavy duty cooling, brakes, & suspension were a huge benefit! Anyway, there's my 2 cents. Enjoyed the video!

They also dominate the market for Ambulances. That's probably going to be the next video in the series.

I'd say Ford did until the 6.0 and 6.4 Powerstrokes. I've seen quite a few more GMC and Dodge ambulances out there as of late. And even International which I can't understand why because they're using the same crappy 6.4 Powerstroke Maxxforce7. The engine that made Ford design their own diesel and drop Navistar to provide engines to them. Ford will really dominate the ambulance market in the US once again.

Had a retired Vic for years. Was such a pleasure to drive (except for other drivers acting weird because they thought I was a cop).

my local police are very diverse regarding cars it’s honestly pretty cool. i’ve seen the new focus, doge charge, chevy tahoe, chevy volt, cord crown vic and some sort of pick up trucks. Pretty cool!!

@@volvo09 Non of them realize that it hurts them as well even black people who work in the car industry because if manufacturers cut ties with the cops, worker's wages would decrease because the work they put into making these cars won't be needed anymore. And those whose jobs are specifically to create these custom cars would lose their jobs as well or be relegated to another position with high chances of having a lower wage.

Seeing those bubble chevys in the 90s, in Chicago, actually made me want to buy and bubble, and later a box. But I was too young, early teens, so didn't get one until the start of 2000s

In my 46 years in law enforcement, I have driven everything from an AMC Matador to the Ford explorer and my favorite car is the crown vic and the best patrol vehicle was my Ford explorer I drove for 8 years. The Chevrolets and Dodges were terrible for police use and I have a hemi drag car and was a die hard Chrysler guy.

Ford needs to bring back the Crown Vic. I've always loved them. They're roomy, comfortable, plenty of power, and extremely reliable. I have or had several with over 400k miles.

Mine was a total piece of junk. Everything was broken on the car before I finally gave it to a junkyard. A/C was broken, none of the windows rolled down, speedometer was off, gear indicator was broken, held excessive vapor pressure in the gas tank, power steering went out, etc...

I drive a Ford Interceptor Paramedic response unit, and it is a pain in the ass at night when I get behind somebody and they immediately slow to 30 mph (in a 45 mph zone) because the see the silhouette in their mirror and think there's a cop behind them

@@yenkodavi3573 Police in Europe use so many different cars, so there probably isn't a specific model associated with police. Japanese police use a lot of different cars as well, but the Toyota Crown is more or less equivalent to the Ford Crown Victoria in terms of use by police.

I've owned both a Caprice and Crown Victoria as personal vehicles. They were both great cars. You know you can push them to the limit and it isn't going to break.

chevy is still holding onto the body on frame suv. makes it a neat truck to use nowadays

When I was traveling to Minnesota I was so surprised there was a GMC cop car.

Remember when there was a police model of the Dodge Intrepid (known in Canada as the Chrysler Intrepid) back before the Dodge Charger police version was launched in 2006? I love the Crown Victoria and Mercury Marauder, but I must say the Intrepid was a much more sporty car. Also remember when the Chevy Impala was a popular police car?

I had a conversation with a cop in AZ while waiting for a tow truck a few years ago. He said they can't use the Explorer there because the police package deletes the rear AC. Since rear AC is normally standard the front AC isn't designed to handle the whole vehicle and can't keep up in the summer heat, especially when the vehicle is idling for an extended period. They primarily use the Tahoe as they retain rear AC with the police package. If you don't see many Explorers in those parts that's why.

Chevys biggest mistake was cancelling the caprice back in 96. I know fleet sales doesn't profit the way civilian sales do. But they were fast, strong, and just all around great cars. I had to drive Ford's in the city I used to work for. Originally we had mostly Chevy caprices and hands down I would have taken a Chevy over a Ford any day of the week.

As valet parking, I had a couple who had a Crown Victoria police interceptor, and they always asked me to go get their car. I always enjoy to drive their car.

The Plymouth Fury III powertrain was very successful. Police sales were part of that success.

sales were down in 19 because departments were still using the 16-18 year models. I service several police fleets from different citiies at work and almost none of them have 19's in their fleet. all 16-18's still

Chrysler also really messed up when they dropped the RWD Diplomat and Grand Fury in 1988. These cars were known as ' the nations police car ' throughout the 1980's and had around a 65% market share. Unfortunately they didn't have anything to replace them with. Even though Chryslers large FWD cars were big enough to be police cruisers they were in no way durable especially the transmissions. They attempted to make a police version of the Dodge Intrepid which officers really liked but they broke down repeatedly and were scrapped after only a 3 year run. Ford and GM also learned that their early model large FWD cars couldn't cut it as a police car either. Ford with the 2nd gen. Taurus and GM with both the 1st and 2nd gen. Chevy Lumina. FWD police cars didn't become reliable until the mid 2000's with the 2nd gen. Chevy Impala and 4th gen. Ford Taurus. At least Chrysler had the sense to build a new RWD platform in the mid 2000's and introduce the Dodge Charger ' police pursuit ' edition which quickly became a favorite of police agency's nationwide. PS-- Also can't dismiss GM's half hearted attempt at a RWD police car with the HOLDEN ooh sorry ' CHEVY ' Caprice. This was a good car except for the DOD system wearing out the camshaft every 25K miles.

Константин Моисеев The last gen Impala always reminded me of the Intrepid as they had a similar body shape. I’ve seen some undercover’s in blacked out Impala’s and they can look pretty good. Front wheel drive feels wrong though after being so used to the Crown Vic.

I help service the Ford explorer (interceptor) police vehicles and average real world mpg around 11 mpgs because of excessive idling. They are not driven like you and me driving from point A to point B. We recently had two of the new hybrids, Ford had to take back one of them because they could not figure out how to fix it. And will be sending us a replacement. They still have some issues to work out.

I love mid 80's to mid 90's Cheavy Caprice police interceptors. They are classic! 🇨🇦

so what's the short answer to the question? cheaper than other brands and also they customized their cars to suit police better?

No. The overall reason is Price to Performance ratio. Departments evaluate their "options" test them and pick the top performers based on a variety type judgment looking at reliability, fuel economy, performance, etc and nothing right now is beating ford for fuel efficient, reliable, powerful motors on the Ecoboost explorer police interceptor platform which easily outruns the v8 chevy tahoe, and former crown vic interceptor.. if they brought the crown vic back it would probably sell out also quickly inventory wise because of its proven reliability

This is why I slow down whenever I see a Ford explorer in my rear view mirror.

I build Police vehicles for a living. Ford’s are so popular mainly because the price is cheaper, so less funded departments can afford to put them in the road without blowing their budget. However, the Interceptor Utility has major drawbacks versus the Tahoes and the Durango Pursuits. It is significantly smaller than the other, thus makes it harder to hide electronics. And with the ever advancing light technology, there is less room to mount and wire control units (Core Systems or Pathfinder systems) and have them easily accessible for repairs, yet still have them protected from damage, while still looking professional. Ford also lacks in other areas too, they don’t have a comprehensive pass through harness like Tahoe’s. There is major issues with tail light leakage. Even when Vertex or Strobes aren’t installed, departments complain about water in the taillights. Also, they only have the main battery as a power source. Tahoe’s come with a second upfitter battery in the cargo area that you can wire all the lights and sirens to, so that if that battery dies, you can still start the vehicle. All in all, they make for an easier and faster build than the others, but generally doesn’t look as good.

My grandpa has an Explorer ST and I have an Edge ST, they are both great cars. I think they should make a Crown Vic ST since they got rid of all of their other sedans.

I had a 2016 black Explorer Sport. Sometimes even the cops would wave to me thinking I was a cop.

In 1976 Chrysler, who was dominating the police car industry, introduced their "Lean Burn Computer". They forgot, however, to warn Police Departments and Fire/EMS Service providers that the "Lean Burn" would shut down the vehicle's engine when the radio's microphone was keyed. A simple, 2 cent capacitor, installed across the sender unit to ground was all that was needed to remedy the problem but they neglected to tell their customers. The value of the capacitor varied with the frequency of the radio. Nothing was done about the problem until the FBI (a division of the Justice Department that was funding the purchase of most US police car) purchased 2,000 cars and couldn't use them.

Chargers are over 50% are Ford utilities where as the Chargers compete with the rest including Tahoe/Suburban and Durango, F Series pickups. Basically well fun Chargers are out numbered and out sold.

@Patrick Martin So does the v6 version. Since we started using the Chargers in 2010, almost everyone has the same issue. Some as many as three times before being taken out of service for good. The Chargers can not handle the extreme use. With some minor part redesigns and better materials the Charger could be a decent police vehicle. In contrast, our units that use the Explorer had very few issues and rarely went down.

The retired police cars become taxis.

I work for a Power Company in Georgia ( Get it?) They only have Ford vehicles. I work everyday in Security where we have 2 Ford F-150's. One is a 2017, the other a 2019. These vehicles are not abused and maintained very well. Same two vehicles since I started working here in early 2016. The 2017 has about 105k on it and the 2019 has about 70k on it. Computer/emissions problems are a constant in both...coolant leaks, electrical problems. The 2017 has a 5.0 liter in it and has developed a rattling sound in engine. Replaced transmission in 2017 at 70k. I guess only the police get theirs built tough.

When the CVPI was the thing, there was one key way to tell the Police variant apart from a civilian model: The grille and tail facshia. The Civilian model was chromed out. The Fleet Versions (Including taxi) had the blacked out back end and the honeycomb grille. I know of a couple PDs that got wise to that fact and actually bought Civilian models and modified them for exactly that reason. I ended up seeing this personally one time, immediately before the transition to the Taurus and Explorers. Not gonna lie, I was impressed to see they figured out we knew that little detail. Now, seeing the Fusion PD cars is a first. Looks like an NYPD thing. We've only ever seen the Taurus, Caprice, Charger, Tahoe, and Durango. Taurus was mostly used by the neighboring city, until transitioning to the Explorer. County cops had the Caprice PPV and a Tahoe. Now they've traded them all in for Explorers -- with a couple straggler Caprice still floating around until those get replaced. Our city had old CVPI until they got a couple second-hand Caprice PPV and just replaced those in 2018 with a Charger for the K9 officer, and 3 Durangos (Yes, I am from a pretty small town - That's our entire police fleet, minus a Code Enforcement Dodge 1500, which is also second hand). Oregon State has a bigger variety. They use Chargers and Tahoes, but there are two active paint schemes -- Traditional Blue with Yellow stripes, and the newly introduced Silver Metallic. It's a little harder to spot an OSP unit in the wild unless he's sitting in the median shooting tailpipes on I-5.

Ford should make an updated version of the Crown Victoria. I'd buy one.

Glad Jim Hackett stood up to the societal pressure and stated that regardless, law enforcement plays an important role in the safety of society AND that supplying vehicles to them isn't "controversial," because their actions have nothing to do with each other and don't reflect on Ford as a car manufacturer. Jim Hackett sounds like a wise businessman. CNBS also purposefully (rule number one of creating an argument is to end on the point you want people to remember) ended a video about police vehicles on the controversy to seemingly keep people on edge of riots and protests. We can just be peaceful, but that doesn't bring clicks and views does it?

Electric cars and hybrid cars are great and if put in a crown Vic the combination of a tough car able to take a hit with modern tech, it could be something useful Besides, police departments love the Vic. At the Nashville bomb site a 1997 crown Vic was seen still in service. Blue lights flashing and all

They are the best well built ones police departments are still using them till this day but trying to reduce the burden on those cars by having the explorers the abused cars and keeping crown vics for good service and shii

I live in Pennsylvania and most of the cars I see are ford's. However when I drove to Florida along I-95 I saw a ton of dodge chargers. Especially in the Carolinas.

The police department’s in my surrounding townships mostly use the ford police interceptor, but there is one township that uses new dodge chargers.

And many departments who bought Chargers years ago have got rid of or are getting rid of them and buying Fords. When new, the Chargers are fast and handle extremely well. But, steering, suspension, and brakes wear out faster than other cars. The don't hold up in city police work.

Very good account of of what Ford does to serve the community and police.

I agree that the Ford lnterceptor had very powerful engines that can catch up with most suspects vehicles and the front reinforced ends comes in handy for pit stops. It's good police garages can get body parts for damage replacement. I watch COPS every day and see it.

Payload capacity was a major consideration for the explorers being chosen over anything else after the Crown Victorias were phased out.

Ford was handed a commanding share of the police car market by GM in 1996, when GM management canceled the Chevrolet Caprice. This meant Ford's Crown Vic would own this market.

If I'm not mistaken, the chevy caprice was the only vehicle model some police departments decided to have completely rebuilt and put back into service rather than replace them.

Actually there was a large difference in fleet availability. The Caprice was a much better performing high speed interceptor, but the Crown Vic won with the bean counters for being much cheaper overall due to needing less total cars in relation to number on patrol, due to higher reliability. This is why cities went Crown Vic while many State Police preferred the Caprice, as they would be more likely to encounter high speed pursuits and had higher budgets.

Ford has the best technicians as well as networking on getting issues fixed right fast.

Absolutely in PA. For some reason, not very much in GA.

Im gonna miss crown vics patrolling the streets. My towns getting new 2020 explorers but we still have crown vics and one of em still has the rotator lightbar

I can't wait for the "military grade" vehicles be actually military grade. If people knew true military grade they wouldn't have as much fear. It'd be more effective to get more cruisers.

I remember that in 2003 the police sedans where Chevrolet.

Hey what about Tahoe's. Some choices of the Tahoe's is cause of fast on the road nimble on handling and heavy tanks almost indestructible.
