The 5 Stages Of An Emotional Affair // Relationship Radio

Let's talk about emotional affairs. But, first, understand that an emotional affair has to involve a deeper, emotional connection with another person. And the only way we can develop a deep, emotional connection with another person that's reciprocal would be if we're communicating with each other, but not just about mundane, ordinary things. And so, typically, an emotional affair will begin with somebody who's not looking for one. Any positive interaction you have with another person can be the beginning of an emotional affair because the first thing that happens after that vulnerability is that you start having interactions with each other to the point that they gradually begin to cross boundaries.
It can be when you start sharing the deep emotions that you feel. Typically, the way people communicate would be to start telling you things I'm afraid that people might reject me for if they knew. And this emotional affair eventually develops because you gradually cross boundaries by sharing information you shouldn't be sharing. Sometimes the next stage is when you finally admit to yourself, and maybe even to the other person, your emotions toward that person. Until eventually, the admission comes, and you have to admit to yourself, and probably to the other person, that you have crossed boundaries, that you've developed a relationship that you ought not to have because you, or he, or she is married to somebody else.
Sexual affairs don't typically evolve into emotionally solid connections. And so, the stages I've given you here demonstrate the difference between an emotional affair and a sexual affair. I know that it hurts to find that your spouse has been involved with somebody else. And then sometimes that leads to comparing yourself with the other person. It'll lead you to misunderstand not only everybody in the situation, but you will misunderstand yourself as well. Now there are some other things we can discuss. In the last episode of relationship radio, I talked about having an Affair Toolkit. We have one for the spouse who feels they are being cheated on and one for the spouse who is involved with somebody else.
And so, what are the stages of an emotional affair? A friendship that gradually crosses boundaries. And before that, there is some vulnerability, but then friendship gradually crosses boundaries. And then finally, at some point, admission to yourself and probably to the other person of the depth of the emotion you feel toward that person. And then another step is accepting and justifying the emotional affair. I know I'm violating what should be occurring with my husband or wife by having this kind of intimacy, openness, transparency, and vulnerability with another person. But I accept the fact that I'm doing that. I don't feel guilty about it anymore. And I get justified by explaining, this is what it does for me. And then finally, if they get to that final step of leaving a marriage, that would be the stages they go through.
We have another episode of relationship radio where we'll be talking about the same thing. Emotions are difficult to change just because you want them to. So, fear that my spouse is involved with somebody else, you can't just will that away. Love for my spouse is now turning into great pain because I think they don't love me in the same way I love them.

Well put. Really explains the stages easily. The easiest way to know when you've crossed a boundary is when you say or do something you wouldn't do if your partner was beside you and hearing and seeing everything you do. That is when you've gone from a friend/acquaintance into the start of an affair as you are having contact you know would make your spouse uncomfortable or unhappy but are doing it anyway and it also means you're putting this friend above your spouse whether you mean to or not. (Note this does not apply to toxic/abusive relationships for obvious reasons). Also my personal experience, as far as I've been told, didn't quite go in the same order. I think the justification and acceptance came before the realisation the she was in an affair. Justifying that it was harmless and just a bit of fun because the AP was in a different country meanwhile being completely oblivious to the fact she was already hurting me with the ways she was acting without realising it (emotionally distant, unsupportive, lacking intimacy and being overly critical and cruel towards me) which caused a feedback loop rejustifying her feelings about me as anything I tried to do was criticised and made me less wanting to connect. Also I think many of these also start because of being naive rather than malice. It starts of innocent but then the limerance factor kicks in and before they know it they are in too deep and cant work out how to get out of it.

A coworker and myself were starting an emotional affair but thankfully we stopped it. He is married and we started chatting at work and we started to tell each other that we were attracted to each other then we started meeting after work at Starbucks or I would accompany him on after work errands. The whole time were would chat about feelings and such. We decided to stop as I felt bad and so did he about his wife and family, even though it is so hard as he works right in front of me so we see each other all the time, just not speaking anymore.

I don't know if you are Christian or not, but I think it would help if you remember that Adultery is a sin against God, not just your husband. So if you continue having an emotional affair, you are opening the door to God's judgement against you. You might get away with it with your husband, but if you pass away before you repent, God will hold you accountable for lying to your husband and breaking your vow with God. If the fear of betraying your husband isn't enough to stop you, the fear of betraying God should be enough; unless you also don't care about God too.

I personally think that if you feel like having or fall for an emotional affair it means something is lacking with your current spouse, for example, I see my wife could do that in the case I'm neglecting her and not making her feel like that other person does, maybe pretty, nice, happy, etc. There is something you crave and your marriage is not giving you, that's why one could fall for that. Never say never, it could happen to anybody.

In working with people I have often encountered people being dishonest with their partner and perhaps in denial themselves as to whether or not they are in an emotional affair; or for that matter, infatuated with someone other than their partner, is to ask yourself an important question. Would you, or your partner feel genuinely happy if their “friend” finds a new love interest?? An honest answer to that question tells you all you need to know.

Emotional affairs begin when one person in the MARRIAGE steps out and makes themselves available to the women/men around them. The cheater gives leading body language. The two talk. They start having lunch at work. Then they exchange cellphone numbers. Then they text several times daily. Then they meet out after work- a lot. Then they work out and exercise together- because she makes him feel sexy again. The secret relationship has crossed all boundaries! Then the sexy talk. Then the coarse language and crude jokes. Then he gets caught. Then he DEFENDS her because "we're just friends-- she's my friend". Cellphones and social media have been a HUGE deal breaker! The cheaters can keep on and on for quite some time because the device is locked to the spouse. You wanna cheat? Go for it. It is the greatest sin that will ever be committed. God Will certainly have big questions for the CHEATER!!!!

No, they don’t care. They will swear losing you and your family is worth it. That they met their soulmate, etc. trust me. Leave. Run. Never look back. The faster you go, the faster you heal. Sadly my kids and I learned this the hard way. You can’t help people who hate themselves so much they destroy their family.

Well, I'm not saying you are the reason for the affair, nor am I justifying his behaviour please believe I am not. because it was his choice at the end of the day, but I will say this... Affairs can develop on many different grounds from lacking something from the other spouse to that wire in the body that generally loves to have multiple people... ask yourself what is it that she is giving him that you may not be giving him if then you discover the answer you can decide whether or not your at fault... you will know if you can't discover what it is, then just know his talking out his backside

Well in that case he is the one lacking time for his family... It's because he spent more time with his co worker and there are just ladies who would always like to ruin their relationship flirting showing skin and not afraid even to involve themselves just to get what they want. He is not someone who offers time. Have you seen someone married and no text no calls not even a day to spend he just need someone to share bills with him.

My experience in life is that the majority of so-called ‘cheating’ is because a person’s Needs are not being met. The person that does the cheating always gets blamed, but I think it’s more complicated. For example, the person doing the cheating may have already discussed with their partner why they are unhappy, yet nothing ever happens. In fact, the conversations often occur many times. So, they end up between a rock and a hard place. That is, cheat or get divorced. Two rotten choices, with cheating being the lesser of the two evils. Bottom line is that cheating usually doesn’t occur within a thriving relationship, where each person’s Needs within the relationship are being met.
