The 2023 Kia EV6 GT is Fun, but Range is Lacking

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The high-horsepower 2023 Kia #EV6GT is way faster and has legit performance hardware over its slower ‪@kia‬ #EV6 siblings! It's ultimately pretty fun as electric hatch-crossover-things go. But an EPA-estimated 206 miles of range on a perfect day gives us range anxiety and actually made a #roadtrip impossible.

I own one, and if you drive it halfway sensibly, you can crush the EPA rating. Right now I’m getting 270-280 miles of range and that’s in Normal mode not Eco, with enough bursts in GT mode to keep me happy.

Interesting - always good to hear from owners! Not sure if 270 miles would have made the road trip we wanted to take more feasible; infrastructure where we were going would make it tough in anything but a Lucid right now.

Second this. I can get 250 miles of range pretty easy in normal/eco with a very healthy amount of GT mode for the smiles

Tesla Björn made his standard 1000km roadtest with the EV6 GT and it was only 15 minutes slower for the trip on 10degC colder weather than a Tesla Model Y LR. So it's the U.S. charging stations that generate the problem. 😢

I own a GT variant and I love this car. I ended up getting a steal for it at a local dealership for 52k. Its my daily commuter to get me to work. Insane performance, suspension, and comfort are all amazing. Range is very doable IMO, averaging 230 driving it in sport mode. This car is definitely a head turner. I highly recommend this vehicle to those looking for a fast and fun daily commuter. Blessings!

Great to hear you get that many miles per charge!! That's not bad at all!

Love our GT-Line; super fun! I would lose my sanity and license if we had the GT.

Nice, informative and honest video as usual. Also very approachable to all without being too "let's recap EV's or EPA" but rather cleverly inserted in the review. Well done. And yes, (working) chargers do get challenging to find South and West of DC ....Last but not least, two enthusiastic thumbs up for the giggle when the car accelerates 👍👍

You can cruise on highways with the custom mode with comfort setting on the suspension.

Also don't get too worried about 80%. Recently we drove to Cornwall and arrived at a McDonalds with 41% charge. We plugged into a 150 kWh charger and went inside. After a quick comfort break visit, we ordered our food and coffee, and sat down. Food arrived in about 8 minutes cos it was busy. My Kia app had informed me the car was within 10 mins of being fully charged BEFORE we finished eating. I think it actually got to 98% about 8 mins later when we stopped the charge. With an 800 volt charging system, over the 80% + charging period, it can charge way lower than 250 kW and still reach 100% quickly... liked the video 😎

Glad you enjoyed! The challenge for the specific trip I wanted to try was that the charging infrastructure just isn't there... all but one charger would've been 50 kW max speed which really slows down a road trip. If there were 150s, it would have been feasible even though 350s are preferred.

Ah, charging infrastructure. Yes I get it now.Over here in the UK we are much more densely populated, and because of this somewhat unfair advantage the charging networks don't need to cover huge swathes of sparsely populated land, so our infrastructure has been improving out of all recognition. Examples demonstrated by Dave, here...www.youtube.com/@davetakesiton

Range is more than quoted if not using Track-Mode Green button. Green Button is Too Much Power for safe in-Town driving anyway.

This is cool, but after seeing what Hyundai did with the Ioniq 5N, I have to prefer that even more insane version.

How the heck did they manage to make it so inefficient that it loses over a hundred miles of range versus the regular version?

  • @ALMX5DP

I think it’s simply due to the low energy density of EVs that makes the difference seem so large. By my calculation the efficiency drop is about equivalent to a 30mpg car being compared to a 20mpg performance version (not dissimilar to how a Mustang Ecoboost getting 33mpg highway while the Dark Horse gets 22mpg highway).

Ask the EPA , and read what actual owners are getting. See a couple of comments I have just made. I think maybe their protocols need adjusting....

It's not over 100 miles of difference. It's more like 50 at the most IRL.

The Rear Motor is Larger like the Genesis and the Front motor "is" the Back on the non GT models. This accounts for some substantial difference in power consumption. My GT gets more than the 206 mi. range in any setting except Green GT Button.

You say: "this electric car is ment to be your only car" I say NO electric car is ment to be your only car. Who buys an ev as their only car? Of course you have to have a 2nd ice car for long journeys.

That's why I drive a 2015 Chevy Volt, it's two cars in one :D Yeah it's a bit ugly on the back end but I drove from SF to LA in what felt like record time and my daily commute and driving around town is done as a pure EV. Can't beat that. My next car will be a "real" EV though - I'm thinking either Equinox EV or EX30, waiting on reviews and availability of course.
