The 2020 Toyota C-HR Is A Weird Little CUV With Compromises

The #ToyotaCHR started development as a vehicle for Scion, Toyota's youth orientated brand that was killed off in 2017 due to slow sales. Because of its roots, the #CHR had some noticeable quirky design details and it has carried over into the transition as a #Toyota model. For 2020, the #CoupeHighRider crossover gets some nice updates, mainly to address lack of a decent head unit and a lack of nice features. However, AWD is still not an option and the entry level Toyota SUV still lacks decent grunt and a usable trunk and back seat.

Would defeat the purpose of the hierarchy in the line up. Put this at 200 hp and everything else above it has to increase in power. Also the general buyer wouldn't be revving it to use all 200+ hp so that's why Toyota didn't do it. What it needs is the Corollas 2.0. since the CHR and Lexus UX use this same platform and underpinnings

The CH-R is indeed all compromised, and shows its Scion origins with the overly quirky design. Toyota really needs to offer it with a better engine, such as a 2.0T, and add AWD, to get it to make some sense in my mind. As it is, there is just some weird style, and little substance.

That "boring" base Corolla is faster & more fun to drive than this C-HR and Corolla sedan has slightly more passenger & cargo space. For example, the Corolla sedan has 35 inches of rear legroom and this 2020 C-HR has 32 inches. This car is definitely not for a family, but I don’t think that’s who Toyota marketing this car to. They CAN be good if they’re well-built and well-tuned. Accelerating uphill with a CVT, for example, is amazing since it’s smooth all the way without ever needing to shift gears. The problem usually occurs when you try to quickly accelerate or decelerate. You feel that so-called “rubberbanding effect” from the CVT having to suddenly change ratios (since it can’t just drop/upshift a gear like regular autos). This combined with poor response to you putting your foot down is what sucks the life out of cars with CVT’s (usually).
