The 2010s: A Reflection Back On A Wacky Decade

Go to NordVPN.com/althist and use code ALTHIST to get 70% off a 3 year plan plus 1 additional month free.
The 2010s sure were crazy weren't they. How will history remember the 2010s? Will future generations see it as a terrible time, or not that bad? After much deliberation, here is my take.

Everyone knew it was jean jackets, loose fitting clothes, grunge and goth. Everyone knew the 2000s were pop metal bands, Emo and the Middle East wars Nobody knows what the fuck the 2010s are. There is no singular culture anymore because everyone lives in their own online cultural bubbles and experience different things now.

@@joey199412 It really wasn't that simple from what I recall having lived through all those decades. I think it only seems that way now with the benefit of hindsight. I also think your impression of the 2010s as an outlier is colored by the increased amount of information readily available when compared to decades past, i.e. it _seems_ more diverse and disconnected but it really isn't. The 80s, 90s, and 2000s were actually just as diverse in style and thought while people were still experiencing them. But we've come up with shorthand ways of describing them in retrospect and the same will eventually be the case for the 2010s. Every decade feels like the rebel while you're in it but it always ends up being just another mark on the calendar in the end.

I'm surprised by how many people are still so depressed about the 2020s. I think we're heading up at the moment. Arguably the big unrests of the early decade were stuff left over from the 2010s - the George Floyd riots, the Capitol Hill riots, the covid culture, all really heavily tied into the zeitgeist of the mid-to-late 2010s. But now that that's over, I think 2023 has comparatively been a lot more hopeful. There's a slow shift in how people view the internet and the world currently, which will probably blossom as the years push on. Most decades don't really gain their cultural significance until some ways into them. The 90s started in 1991 or 1992, the 2000s started on 9/11, etc., and I think that's the way future historians will look at the 2020s. They started in 2022 or 2023. inb4 "aged horribly"

Technically a decade is 10 years. But we're not talking about the 202nd decade of this era, like we're talking about the 21st century, but about the decade we call the 2010s. We signify this decade as the first day of a year that has a 10 at the end so January the 1st 2010 from there it takes 10 years to end so January 1st 2020 is the end of this decade. Like it used to be you could put "A plague happened and lots of people died." Or "WW2 happened, Nazis lost and Nazi officers were tried, and then the Cold War started." Now it goes "Revolutions happened, The U.S. started losing its influence cause of blah blah, memes, social media, China and Russia, Middle East" and it's just all over the place.

I feel that this decade will likely have only a few major points that are remembered: The Arab Spring (and the effects it had), the rise of online communication and technology (such as social media), and the rise of China and Russia as global contenders to the West's influence.

I lived in Egypt through the 2011 Revolution before returning back to my home country of Scotland in summer, 2012. Hearing you draw the connection between the Arab Spring, Brexit, and the debate of Scottish Independence - three of the most defining events in my short 22 years - was quite the mindfuck. Even if they are all just a line of dominoes knocking eachother over, it's crazy to think of how these events can come back to bite you even on a more personal level, years after your involvement with them was thought to be finished. 10/10 video - I now have an existential crisis inbound. Would watch again.

I don't know if you'll ever read this but if you do... This decade coming up will see the effects of Brexit come in - whether it will be under 'No Deal' terms or not is something to wait for. We both know (as a fellow Scot!) that the country rejected Brexit alongside Northern Ireland and should the warnings of Brexit turn out to be true, e.g. lorries going to the continent will need to wait longer than they otherwise would under prior conditions, supplies of food and medicine from the mainland takes longer to reach the shelves of British shops, clearly the case for Scottish Independence I would imagine would get louder. Assuming that next year returns an Independence majority Scottish Government, what would relations be like between Scotland and the rest of the UK be like in the event that the UK Government grants permission of holding another referendum and this time 'Yes' wins?

@@victuz, Um i'm sorry but the 2010's did past and we are in the 2020's already. HOWEVER at the same time we are also in a decade that hasn't ended yet which is the 202nd decade or just the 2nd decade of the 21st century. The 202nd decade will end in December 31st 2020 but we are NOT in the 2010's anymore in 2020. It's just that both decades (2010's 2010-2019, 2020's 2020-2029 is a popular culture term, and 202nd decade 2011-2020, 203rd decade 2021-2030 which is a historian term) are not coexisting this year because of how the rules are laid out in these term (which is funny that no year 0 gives us two terms to work with which in their own right they're both right). But this whole talk thing will be completely irrelevant once 2021 comes in the picture because then both the 2020's and 203rd decade will be coexisting at the same time until 2030. So when we were looking back on the decade in 2019 we were looking back on the 2010's not the 202nd decade. Even then the 202nd decade has almost the same amount of years except 2010 is not there and 2020 is in there instead (which the 2010's is a decade however it's in a term that not a full 10 years in the first few years that happened but that only happened ONCE in the years AD 1 to AD 9. After that everything else was a full 10 years and this term doesn't care about no year zero because it's uses something else with the digit rollover an same number group of ten. And then the 202nd decade which is also a decade but it's trying to be divisible by AD 1 so that makes the 1st decade AD AD 1 to AD 10 a full ten years). If you want to look back on the 202nd decade by December 31st 2020 then go ahead but it's just nearly the same like the 2010's it just include 2020 and excludes 2010. So to put it simply the 2010's lasted from 2010 to 2019, the 202nd decade/2nd decade of the 21st century lasted from 2011 and is going to end in 2020, the 2020's is going to last from 2020 to 2029, and the 203rd decade/3rd decade of the 21st century is going to start in 2021 and going to end in 2030. So in 2021 both decades will be coexisting and that's all I have to say about that.

Actually, in early 1910 people were very aware something was on the brink to happen. Especially on a political level people knew because of all the alliance treaties made and the growing influence of Germany that something was going to happen and happen soon. What they didn't know was just how bad it would become.
