The 10,000-Calorie Diet: This is What Sumo Wrestlers Eat
Ойын-сауық
MUNCHIES introduces FUEL, a new series dedicated to the high performance diets of athletes. We follow Byamba, current world sumo champion, through his average day of consuming 10,000 calories. In and out of the dojo, Byamba shows us how to shop, cook, and eat chankonabe- a Japanese stew eaten by sumo wrestlers to pack on the pounds. Itadakimasu!

Quite a lot of people speak 3 languages, or at least when you live in a non english speaking country. I speak Dutch (native) English and German. With a bit french thrown in that is leftover from 2 years in school. It's more impressive when you speak languages that are so different from one another. Like a combo from an eastern language (japanese, mandarin, korean), south eastern (like hindi, thai, indonesian) middle eastern (kurdish, arabic, persian, hebrew) western euro languages (spanish, german, english, french, dutch) and so on and so on.

Byamba is a lovely guy, very engaging and a great watch. But he's NOT a world champion. He's done well in the amateur tournaments organised by the US Sumo dude you see in the video, but in terms of skill level with the pros, honestly, it's essentially the difference between special forces and airsoft. In professional Sumo he managed one jonokuchi (absolute lowest division) basho (tournament) win. There are three more non-professional divisions above that - jonidan, sandanme, and makushita. The first professional division is juryo, which Byamba never made it to (he was a reasonably competitive makushita wrestler for a short while.) The makuuchi ranks above that - maegashira, and then the sanyaku ranks of komusubi, sekiwake, and then ozeki and finally yokozuna - are the only ones where you if you won a basho could credibly claim you were a world champion. If you put him against anyone in even the juryo division he'd get beaten very easily. Essentially he's a lovely bloke who never made it in pro sumo and does this sideshow stuff in the US. Nothing wrong with that at all; but definitively not even close to a world champion.

@@1000GayOwls yes, I'v discovered that the top rank in sumo is yokozuna, not world champion
I just read that Byamba passed away in 2020 from an illness. He was only 35 years old, and left a wife and child behind. So, so sad. He genuinely seemed like a great dude.

This legend of a man passed away last year. I heard tales of him, i heard he was one of a kind gentle and kind souls. He left an empty space in the world of sumo, but the biggest one was left in the hearts of people. May our condolences reach his family and our prayers to him.
