Testing the Kent Trouvaille Walmart Bike for durability

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In a previous video • This Walmart MTB looks... we bought and inspected the Kent Trouvaille Walmart bike because it looked really impressive for the price. To nobody's surprise it was assembled terribly, but after we did a tuneup it ran pretty nice! Today we take the Kent Trouvaille on a real mountain bike trail to see what it's made of.

    For people starting the journey of MTBing, getting something cheap but upgraded is a huge perk. Many can't justify spending more than a few hundred dollars on something they may never use but a few times. A total build up to super high end components on this bike might be a really cool series. Taking a $350 bike and following a build up to a $3,500 bike (aluminum frame) would be a cool trip to follow!

    It's fine for someone to buy a cheap bike and see if they like mtn biking, but such a huge waste of money to start updrading it to something good. These cheap bikes don't have any of the standards nice frames have. ie: thru axle. So they buy nice wheels, buy a new frame and their nice wheels dont fit...

    80% of bearing failures are due to lack of grease so once again, the Trouvaille was doomed by improper assembly The bike has potential just don't take it to the trail right out of the box, give it once-over, grease what needs to be greased, tighten the bolts that need to be tightened

    These were cartridge bearings which actually did have grease in them. I honestly don't know why they failed. In any case, you can't expect someone assembling BBQ's to grease a BB that's already installed. Like you said, it's up to the buyer to really check it over before taking it out. You're saving money in exchange for consistency and assembly.

  • @TrueNomadSkies

    @TrueNomadSkies

    Probably half the bottom brackets, wheel bearings, headsets, pedals, etc that I take apart have basically no grease in them. The other half look to have been properly serviced at the time of assembly, but 15 years down the road just calls for a redo. It's scary to think that for years, I just rode bikes as they came.

  • @zenofthemoment

    @zenofthemoment

    @@BermPeakExpress alternatively, a buyer should take it to their LBS and ask for a 'safety check', or if they're willing to spend a few more bucks, a new bike tune. Might not have caught the BB, but it'll catch those really basic issues that the BBQ assemblers would've missed.

    Both MTB's I have bought (Mongoose Ledge X2 and KT) I ride them stock and if I like them I do almost total upgrade re-builds and I have trouble free performance when I hit the trail as hard as my 75 year old body will allow! Only thing original on both MTB's is frame, wheels and tubes, and the 180mm brake rotor which gets moved to the rear! On the KT I also kept the tires. I learned a bunch about MTB's and had fun doing it thanks to people like you, Kev, CS, WT etc..... and I also have a bunch of money left for other stuff! If I had bought bike shop stuff I would be broke and I wouldn't of learned much. Allot of talk on here saying just get one and I have to agree. I owned one for a day, luckily the bike store let me use it as credit for a real mountain bike. Its really not an entry level MTB to me, its just a 'legally ok with offroad' version of this Walmart bike which is really for the road/paths. I'd rather have a full rigid then ride those garbage forks in real singletrack. Unless the Marlin is way better then it used to be? Feel like generic brand entry level real fork that rides ok is like $250, half the price of a Marlin so I understand why its too cheap to be good, especially a dealer brand with markup. (Just looked it up, was unaware they made so many Marlin, Marlin 8 for 1330 has entry level air fork).

    I work in a shop in North Texas. Let me break this down for you, if you're watching this video and thinking it's still worth it for you. I'll tell you, if you're jazzed about biking (I'm betting you are, since you're watching this channel), you need to look past this bike or something like it. I know from experience! :D After buying the bike, you'll want to get it checked over by a professional. That's not free. You can expect to pay $100 right there to get it tuned properly. Ok with that out of the way, that bottom bracket is a basic retainer bearing setup. If you're planning on riding this a lot, maybe even on-road, those bearings will die very quickly. You'll want a sealed cartridge bottom bracket. Now, like Seth said, they're still very cheap! Awesome, right? But that doesn't install itself, does it? You can expect to pay $30-$50 to have a shop do it. So you've paid $350-$400 for the bike, $100 dollars to get it properly set up, and another $45-$65 for a bottom bracket. That's over $550 for a bike that will still creak and groan when you use it for what it's intended for (Regardless of that lawyer sticker on it. We all know it's a mountain bike). And that's before we start talking about the longevity of these parts. You'll be back in the shop or on Amazon buying new parts very soon :( For $735, a Giant Talon would get you many things. For one, you'll be getting it from a proper bike shop, so it'll be ready to rip straight out of the store. You're getting hydraulic brakes which offer better brake control and power. You're getting a narrow/wide chainring to keep the chain on the bike. You're getting a stiffer frame which will respond better to your inputs and let you feel more confident on the trails. I can't say it enough. It's worth the extra $200 to spring for something like that. Even if that takes a full summer for you to earn, it's worth it. Plus, summer is kinda hot anyway :P In short, I'd rather see your bike on the trail, and not it the work stand. An extra $200 gets you there. Could you commute on this thing if it's properly assembled? Hell yeah, you could! Pump those tires up to max, and that'd be rad! But that's about all you should expect.

    I couldn’t agree with you more. No matter what, a Walmart bike is a Walmart bike. They are all built to a price point. Their selling point is to make you think you are getting a ton for your money. The average Walmart shopper looking at a bike rack does not know the hidden cost you explained. No matter how much you pay for it, you will always get 75 percent of the bike you think you are getting at Walmart. These mountain bikes like this one that are now being sold at Walmart are going to keep the emergency rooms in business. I think Seth has done an excellent job showing how much of an unfinished product they really are.

    I agree with you on everything but the BB. Those were all we had, really until the late 90's (unless you had deeper pockets than me), and they worked great, with the understanding that they took more maintenance than a sealed BB. But they will also last longer than any sealed BB with the proper care. I think this bike could potentially be an okay entrance point if you are starting from zero and also want to learn maintenance and upgrade as you progress. But that is really the optimist in me, probably better to get a proper bike like mentioned or, even better, take a friend who knows bikes and buy used.

    @@korcommander Oh, absolutely! But there's tools and expertise that new bike owners just won't usually have, and that can quickly get expensive. Otherwise it can rapidly add up and kill the value proposition

  • @korcommander

    @korcommander

    @@protectme4278 You're assuming new bike owners only bike. Most people have a good amount of tools they need to work on one. Most people have screwdrivers, allen keys, and a socket wrench. If you have a question on how to tune a derailur or bed in brakes, thats what KZread is for. The thing with Walmart bikes, is for a beginner, like myself, everything I would need to start on the trails is there. The frames come with lifetime warranties, and stuff on them are almost all standardized. The Schwinn axums have internal dropper post routing. Them and the Kents have tapered head tubes. This stuff other bikes may not even have for $100 to $200 more in price. I can take a $400 bike, and as I improve, improve the bike, so by the time I'm actually good, I would have a high quality hard tail. I would also like to say most bike shops in DFW are located in places where the people have more money than sense. These people would rather pay to never have to learn how to deal with a mountain bike. I've worked up there too. I'm from Oak cliff, before the yuppies invaded, I'm not gonna spend $100 for you to look at my bike and grease a few things. We're a bit more self reliant stock down here.

    I don’t think you should take the blame for the handle bars. In the video play back the bar bends when they hit the ground at the very end of the crash. That’s like no weight behind the bike at that point. The bars should not bend from the bike falling side ways and impacting the dirt. Teenagers and kids will simulate that just hastily putting the bike down after riding.
