The palette is red! Why would they even stop making these? It's amazing! :D If you want to use the dried up paint in the tubes, you could cut open the tubes. It happened to me once or twice and I was able to put the rest of the dried up paint in a palette and still use it. But I have to admit, that these paints are so much better than the Cotman palette I started out with.

That first tin is gorgeous! I don't know if I've told you, but I've been obsessed with been collecting a bunch of vintage sets from ebay for months now and am waiting to do a video on them - but I hadn't found any Cotmans in my search! That second box is also nice, I like the mixing area and those colors are so vibrant! Whhhhy did they change their browns? Hahah. Thanks for sharing this one.

I have the current Cotman tubes, and they are made in China. Most likely, the formula changes were a cost-cutting measure. I have been pleased with my Cotman tubes (I am mostly at the student-grade price stage right now :) ).The first set appears to be from the early 70's (perhaps the late 60's), based on the graphics of the box and tubes. The second set is from the 90's or maybe late 80's - based on some old tubes I have.

The older cotman paints from the 90s also used genuine cobalt and cadmium too.

it's interesting to see the consistency of these paints has changed over time. Sometimes it's good that they don't make them like they use to and sometimes it's not. It was cool to watch :)

Love that red tin! I got a set of vintage cotman tubes in a plastic bag a couple years ago. Loved the older stuff, except for the black. Funny enough it was from a Goodwill store. Never know what one can find in one of those shops!

Oh, you reminded me of when I was a student. I used to paint with crappy paints and then one year, for a strange reason, i was gifted a set of Cotman gouache tubes. I was shocked, it was night and day. Unfortunately, in our corporal world, where quality =/= profit, Cotman had to go down ... On a side note, Holly smokes pr83, why are you so gorgeous?!

They look much nicer than my newer Cotman pan set. Much prefer a lot of my paints to them. I did love them when I first got them though.

I've just had a rant on Instagram about the changes to the Aquafine range. Similar sorts of changes to the ones you describe. I only noticed when I saw some Aquafine in colours not previously available. I searched on the interweb and found the old and the new colour charts and pigment info. I wonder if Aquafine is still manufactured in England?

Most of my Cotman tubes have dried solid in around 5 years... and I'm very careful trying to prevent that... squeezing to the top and keeping threads clean. I was very sad discovering this after quiting painting due to life events as there were pigments I loved and haven't found them in other brands but I won't buy Cotman again. I use honey based MGraham and Sennelier now.

Pat Kin I’ve experienced the same with my cotman tubes c: I recently salvaged my tube of mauve, because I was too cheap to get the professional version, and cutting the tube away makes then basically useable as a chunck of dried paint c: And... is there really pigments in the cotmans that can’t be found at other places (except PO49 and some other rarities)? Not even at places that sell pigments made for restoration like Kremer?

Hi Annikania. I didn't elaborate because I can get pretty wordy and am working on that... ugh... hard. Anyway, one that comes immediately to mind is Cotman's Peacock blue which even Cotman is no longer making like their old formula I have... most likely because their source for the raw pigment is no longer available. So, its dry and I cut the tube and use as a cake and use it sparingly as its "gold" to me. I should have clarified that I will only buy honey-based pigments now so am looking for dups only in specific brands. As you know, its not just about the pigment but where that mfger gets it and their usually "secret" formula... grinding, etc. The same single pigments in MG and Sennelier are sooo different for instance. and its in the grinding I believe. So, as I said, sadly I have not found replacements. And, btw, I love their mauve and use it as a hard cake too.

Hi Eve, I used to watch a KZread artist whose last name is Cronin. Steve or Steven is his first name. The times I watched him, he used nothing but Cotman paints from tubes. He only used 3 different brushes in his painting. Personally, I have never used Cotmans; but, I understand that they are good quality student paints. I can't buy them locally. I really like the red tin. Red is such a nice color when compared with black. Yesterday, I was at the Habitat Store and saw this big plastic covered palette The lid has the name Robert E. Wood embossed on it. There are 4 large, what I think are mixing wells on the lid. I took the lid off and there are still some paints squeezed into the wells. Since the previous owner did not label the wells, I will only be able to guess what colors they are. Are you familiar with Robert E. Wood? I did a web search and have not been able to confirm anything. Some paintings that I found by this artist are watercolors and another page identified as Robert E. Wood's web site show nothing but oil paintings.

I have used the Robert E. Wood palette for years as a studio palette because the wells are so big. It is still widely available from Blick's, Jerry's, Cheap Joe's and Amazon, ranging from $16 at the art stores to $24 on Amazon. Robert Wood was a very well known and accomplished watercolorist from S. California, 1926-1999. And yes, he painted in oils as well.

Eirenmist, thank you so much for your reply. I lived in S. California back in the early to mid-60s and had not heard of this artist. But, I was in junior high school and at the time, my interest was mostly in drawing. My web search gave me mixed results that I thought that I was looking at two different artists named Robert E. Wood, one from Calgary.

I gotta agree, a lot of Cotman's pigment choices these days are questionable. I have the Sketchers Pocket Box, and half of the split primaries are two pigment mixes, unfortunately. Thanks for showing these neat sets
