That's not old paint. Watercolor doesn't age when dry. All of those pans are brand new, just opened. Don't scrape it. That's a full set and has never been wet. Just use a brush to remove the color with a damp brush.

I know this video is old, but that black stuff in the paint is mold. If you leave it in there and/or use it with your brushes it will transfer into the other paints and the painting. Also, research the paints because since they are old they could have toxic metals like cadmium. In all, it was a score though.

wouldnt it be cheaper to simply buy a new set. Love the colours though, some of them i remember using. Nice haul. But costly ???? maybe

I wish I could find vintage watercolors like these on eBay in my country, especially the old enameled tins. I'm pretty sure the two opened WN pans are moldy. You could probably use them for work that doesn't need to hold up over time, but I'd be afraid of spreading the bacteria to other pans. Unless they're colors that aren't being made anymore (which the warm yellow could be - the old new gamboge) I'd toss them.

Oh, something else I wanted to add. When you get watercolors that are dried in the tubes you can cut the tube open and put the hard paint into pans or a palette. I've also heard of people successfully getting it to be liquid in the tube again by filling water into the tube, waiting and repeating that for weeks. But I think that's unnecessarily complicated. Hope I could keep a few tubes of being thrown away. :)

the cheap joes paint American journey are made for them by DaVinci so they are the same paint! I did the research on them a few years ago so the American journey paint in the 37 ml is a steal!

Since you do research on old watercolors, do you know anything about Murillo watercolors? I have a "Japaned" (enameled) black metal box of 12 colors that I've traced back to a (tentative) 120(+ or -) years. I can't seem to find any details about them online other than mentions in a couple of circa 1890s reproduction catalogs. I love the paints! I know that some are toxic and some are fugitive and some are unstable (the Chrome Yellow has turned a yellow-green), but I love the earthiness and the subdued "darkness" compared to today's superduper-superbright and superclear colors. I wish I could get my hands on another set. I don't want to use these all up! Oh, the tin is heavier than the ones nowadays.

The paint, the black can be a few different things and one of those things may render all those paints dangerous so I'm going to email you and email me back with a closer picture. Erin S. Thank you so much for all your useful tips that you always provide for me 😁👍🏻. I scraped it off with a knife and I noticed it was just on the top. The black one was like dirt/dust or something....😅. Of course I need to be really careful with these paints since they do have toxins with some of their colors!! 👍🏻. I found them on EBay!! There are so many different listings for artist grade paints such as WN, DS, etc... Try searching for watercolor lots and many will show up😉. Good luck 😘😘
